Ep 55: Vulnerability in Blogs & Videos: Steph: Me in Taiwan (blog); February 18-20, 2004 (recorded August 8, 2017) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:22

In this episode I read and reflect on the middle of my first year teaching English in Asia in 2004. This blog reading covers three short blog entries about teaching English to children in a foreign culture while not being comfortable with teaching OR the local culture yet. In a word: vulnerability is the name of the game for this point in my first year in Taiwan. This same exposed state rang true for me when this episode was recorded in August 2017 but for different reasons. In 2004 I was writing the Me In Taiwan blog but in 2017 I was publishing the Changing Scripts Mandarin Chinese language learning YouTube videos about my learning process and progress. A lot changed in digital protection form one project to the next and that is where a lot of the reflection in this episode pitches its tent. Would love to hear from you!  Ep 54: Miicher Elmore: The China Chronicles-From Miami to Shanghai   | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 49:55

This week we expat chat with first time expat, Miicher, a Florida, US native who decided it was time for a change. Miicher is a teacher, an actor, a mom and a natural storyteller, which explains why her Facebook China Chronicles , where she has been sharing her experiences in Shanghai, China, have become such a hit. Usually in Expat Rewind we chat with expats after their first year but we thought it would be fun to do a preview episode with Miicher during her first year and then reflect back on this episode after she reaches that milestone. She arrived in Shanghai in August 2018 so look out for the second part of this interview in August 2019.  Ep 53:Teacher burnout is real: Steph: Me in Taiwan (blog); February 17, 2004 (recorded July 31, 2017) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 11:12

In this episode I read and reflect on the middle of my first year teaching English in Asia in 2004. I was so willing to learn, excited to understand the process and methods and open to learning from my co-workers. Fast forward to the 2017 reflection segment and it is clear that teacher burn has set in and was not really going away anytime soon. Note: It is now December 2018 and I am still not teaching.    Would love to hear from you!  Ep 52:Why won't you steal from me? Steph: Me in Taiwan (blog); February 16, 2004 (recorded July 30, 2017) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15:27

In this episode I share the safety games I used to play in Taiwan, blog writing burnout, and some music that made me feel less isolated in my first long term overseas experience. This blog reading and reflection is from a 2003/2004 expat blog I wrote called Me in Taiwan. The specific entry is from February 16, 2004, which was written just after a vacation I had in Taitung, Taiwan: the other side of the Pacific Ocean from where I lived in the U.S., California.  Ep 51: Guest: Hannah Lund: From the US to Hangzhou, China | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:50:11

This week we expat chat with Hannah Lund, who is magnetic, funny and thinky. Her geographic trajectory includes her home state of Minnesota and a quiet town in Iowa in the U.S., Paris, France and Hangzhou, China. In 2012 it was a mystical story involving a character called Madame White Snake, set in Hangzhou, which was the inspiration for this move to China but Hannah soon found out there were so many more unexpected surprises that would come from this experience. After 6 years in Hangzhou she moved up to Shanghai, which seemed like an apt time to look back at that first year in China in this podcast episode. She uses her short story, “In Search of White Snake”, from the May 2018 edition of Concrete, The Shanghai Literary Review’s revered publication. After Hannah’s animated reading of this piece we chat about many of the expat issues that it brings to the surface (every pun intended), such as her “sense of urgency” to make things happen, facing the differences between the China in her mind and the one in front of her, and a general fascination with ghost stories (how is that expat related? You will need to listen to find out!) We are so pleased to have Hannah in Shanghai now and I am sure you will be thrilled to have her story and wisdom in your ears for this episode.  Ep 50: Steph: Me in Taiwan (blog); February 14, 2004 (recorded July 29, 2017) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 20:31

In this episode I read from a Me in Taiwan blog post I wrote on February 14, 2004 from Tainan, Taiwan and react to it so many years later on July 29, 2017 from Shanghai, China. This is a very hungry episode: at 3 months into my expat experience in Taiwan I was hungry for food and knowledge. On the food side it was coffee and sweet potatoes, which are things I still seek out while living in Shanghai. I was also hungry for language knowledge. Something that started to intrigue me then as a new TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teacher and still does today is how time is conveyed in Mandarin Chinese. I have even more answers today than in this 2017 episode, thanks to a few of the guests on my Mandarin Chinese podcast, Changing Scripts (check out both Jeremy Tiang’s this season and look out for Tanya’s episode in the next season for some helpful insights into this).  Ep 49: Guest: Karl: From the UK to Denmark | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:07:52

Originally from the UK, Karl discusses how he found himself in Denmark, the experiences of his first year and how music helped him to feel at home in his adopted country. He chose The National’s “Trouble Will Find Me” album from 2013 as a jumping off point to discuss the ups and downs of his transition into expat life in Denmark. In the interview Karl briefly mentions his current studies and internship at Sleeknote, which “helps small e-commerce shops and big online retails engage website visitors—without hurting the user experience” and he wanted to share this Sleeknote scholarship with all of you.  Ep 48: Steph: Me in Taiwan (blog); January 29, 2004 (recorded July 24, 2017) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 21:52

In this episode I read from a Me in Taiwan blog post I wrote on January 29, 2004 from Tainan, Taiwan and react to it so many years later on July 24, 2017 from where I was living in Shanghai, China. How to keep the creative fire going while teaching is a strong theme in this blog entry. My 2004 Taiwan self was reacting to the loss of creativity in my non-work time. My 2017 Shanghai self noticed that blog entry grumpiness was just me throwing a temper tantrum at my creativity going into teaching, instead of into my writing. It is amazing what you can realize with time, space and patience. I also ponder what to do after my current non-teaching job: do I teach again in the future and run the risk of losing my creative fire to the classroom again? Would love to hear from you! Expat Rewind Podcast website  Expat Rewind’s Affiliate Links: shop normally with these sites and you will be supporting the podcast at the same time! Amazon & Traveling Mailbox  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Many of us are promised things growing up in a certain culture and often those promises are never actualized. Jennifer is an American who had been to over 70 countries before moving to China to teach at an international school but that did not stop this home country disappointment from kicking in. In this episode she reads a poem that she wrote a bit after her first year in China to her father about these cultural promises. And as we often do in Expat Rewind, we spend quite a while unpacking what this poem and the frustration in it means to her now, what has changed since she wrote it and so much more.
