 Ep. 41 - Genesis - Chapters 1&2 - Creation | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 54:05

This week we dive right into chapters 1 and 2 of Genesis.  We discuss how chapter 1 is a “drone type view” of creation while chapter 2 gives us a more zoomed in and personal look into this beautiful historical narrative.  We love how this really shows us the contrast of how God is infinite yet so very intimate. When looking at the story of creation we want to remember that the “how” is not as important as the “why”.  There is so much that we can learn about God as well as ourselves in these very first chapters of the Bible!   Quotes: “God created the entire universe out of nothing it was originally very good and he created it to glorify himself“ -Systematic Theology, Grudem   “If genesis 1:1 is true than we can believe everything else in bible.” -Tozer   “What is crystal clear is that if something exists now, then there must be a supreme being from which all other beings become. The first assertion of the bible is in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. This text is foundational to all christian thought. It is not only a religious statement but a rationally necessary concept.” - R.C. Sproul   “ The positive side of the fact that God created the universe out of nothing is that it has meaning and a purpose. God and his wisdom created it for something. We should try to understand that purpose and use creation in ways that fit that purpose namely to bring glory to God himself moreover whenever the creation brings us joy we should give thanks to the God who made it all“ -Systematic Theology, Grudem   “God the father was the primary agent in initiating the act of creation. The son is often described as the one “through” whom creation came about and the spirit is generally pictured as completing or filling and giving life to the creation.” -Systematic Theology, Grudem   “When God says that something is good, He is saying that it is perfect and complete.” -Jen Wilkin   “What is a way that we can glorify God by enjoying His creation?”   “God rested to show that the earth was not just a place for business or for things to happen but a place to just “BE” or to exist.” -ESV Study Bible notes Resources: The Song of Creation by Tim Keller God of Creation by Jen Wilkin Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem ESV Study Bible

 Ep. 40 - Genesis - Introduction | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 18:52

Happy New Year!  We are so excited to kick off this year with you by spending the first three months walking through the book of Genesis.  What better place to start than at the very beginning? On today’s episode we give a brief introduction to the book of Genesis.  We also explain how we are planning to cover all 50 chapters in three months as well as why we chose this book. As we mention on the show we would love for you to join our facebook group so we can further discuss the topics presented in each episode.  We are so excited to see what God is going to teach all of us as we study His Word together!   Quotes: “It doesn’t do us any good if we have a high view of scripture, but don’t know what’s found in its sacred pages.”  - R.C. Sproul   “In every section of written word the personal word is enshrined, in genesis as much as in matthew” -A.W. Pink   “As we continue our meditations on the book of genesis may god in his condescending grace reveal unto us wondrous things out of his law.” -A.W.  Ep. 39 - Merry Christmas! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 33:55

Merry Christmas, friends!!!!  Episode 39 is our final one for 2018 and we thought it was only fitting that we wrap up the year with a special Christmas show.  We start off by talking about some of our favorite memories and traditions and then discuss what God has been teaching us individually this season through the Christmas story.  This has been an amazing year and we are truly thankful for each one of our listeners. We pray that you have a sweet week with your family and friends celebrating and reflecting on the birth of our Savior!     Quotes: “God gave Mary someone who could mentor her and relate to her.  God was going to work a miracle through both Elizabeth and Mary.  This shows the character of God. That He is so loving and so kind and cares so deeply for us that He asks Mary to do this big this, but He doesn’t ask her to do it alone.”   “Faithfulness is when God fulfills His promises, kindness is when He does that above and beyond.  He didn’t promise Mary someone to walk alongside her, but in his kindness He went above and beyond. This just shows His character and heart and his loving kindness toward His children.”   “When we’re stuck in a place and wondering where we are and why we are here, we need to remember that God is in control and He’s got it.”   Resources: Out of Egypt I Called My Son Remember God by Annie F.  Ep. 38 - Philippians - Chapter 4 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 40:10

This week we dive into the fourth and final chapter of Philippians.  Paul addresses the importance of rejoicing in The Lord and being content in all circumstances.   He wraps up his letter by reminding the church at Philippi that God is their ultimate provider. At the end of this episode we discuss how the Lord spoke to us individually while studying this short, but rich book of the Bible.  God is so good to meet us right where we are! We hope that you have enjoyed walking through Philippians with us! Quotes: “To be loved, but not known is comforting, but superficial.  But to be known and not loved is our greatest fear. But to fully known is truly loved is a lot like being loved by God.  It is what we need more than anything. It liberates us from pretense, humbles us out of our self-righteousness, and fortifies us for any difficulty life can throw at us.” -Tim Keller   “God is sovereign and Jesus is enough.” -Bethany Roszhart   “We need to learn these things in the light so we can stand on them in the dark.”   “The heart cannot love what the mind does not know.” -Jen Wilkin   “I think there is a bit of holy discontentment that pushes us to spread the gospel and to love people.”   “God can use any means and any people to accomplish His will.” Resources: Inductive Study Guide   *The beautiful music heard on today’s episode is by Katie Cobbs*

 Ep. 37 - Philippians - Chapter 3 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 37:38

On episode 37 of the Adorned Podcast we see that Paul packs so much wisdom and truth into chapter 3 of Philippians.  We would love for you to join us as we discuss what it looks like to rejoice in The Lord, the meaning of imputed righteousness, how we can press on toward the ultimate goal of living for Christ, and why we sometimes feel like strangers in a foreign land.   Quotes: “God works in our hearts to desire to spend more time with Him which will ultimately lead us to more joy.”   “Faith in Christ is what makes you righteous.”   “So many people think that what Jesus started on the cross, we have to finish, but that could not be further from the truth!”   “Our sin is not just taken away and we’re given a blank slate, but that sin is taken away and replaced with Christ’s righteousness.”     “Do we really know God or do we just know about Him?”   “Our purpose here is to love Jesus and to make Him known.”   “This work is not my purpose, this work is not my home, but I can live in this place and steward it well and do what I’m called to do reminding myself that my identity is not found in it.” Resources: Inductive Study Guide *The beautiful music heard on today’s episode is by Katie Cobbs*

 Ep. 36 - Philippians - Chapter 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:54

On this week’s episode we walk verse by verse through chapter 2 of Philippians.  Paul continues to reinforce the importance of humility in the life of a believer.  He also begins to develop another theme that we see throughout the letter, God’s sovereignty.  We hope you will join us as we study and discuss God’s Word together! Quotes: “If we are going to lead people to Christ,  we have to be humble.” “Jesus is the ultimate example of humility.  If we are striving to be more like Him, humility is a big part of this.” “At first there was the fear that this terrible storm and awesome terrain might claim your life. But then you found a refuge and gained the hope that you would be safe. But not everything in the feeling called fear vanished from your heart. Only the life-threatening part. There remained the trembling, the awe, the wonder, the feeling that you would never want to tangle with such a storm or be the adversary of such power. . . . The fear of God is what is left of the storm when you have a safe place to watch right in the middle of it. . . . Oh, the thrill of being here in the center of the awful power of God, yet protected by God himself!” -John Piper “If we truly believe that God is good and He is sovereign, we can trust him with everything without having to question Him and without complaining.” “Being humble means doing something unpleasant so others don’t have to.” -Matt Chandler   Resources: Inductive Study Guide   *The beautiful music heard on today’s episode is by Katie Cobbs*

 Ep. 35 - Philippians - Chapter 1 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 31:41

On this week’s episode we dive into chapter 1 of Philippians.  Right off the bat we are able to see how much Paul cares for the people at this church.  We also begin to see one of the major themes of the book, humility, develop. We would love for you to join us as we discuss the first chapter of Paul’s letter to the church at Philippi.     Quotes: “God delights in seeing us grow to be more like him, but also offers us grace when we fail.  We can us both that growth and that grace to bring Him glory”   “We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believed, but yet at the same time we are more loved and accepted by Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope.” -Tim Keller     “We are worthy because of the gospel.  We don’t earn God’s grace by being worthy, we are worthy because of God’s grace.”   “As we refresh ourselves with the gospel it creates a heart of gratitude and humility and a love for our savior that allows us the desire to grow to be more like Him and to live in a way that displays the work of the cross for all to see.”   Resources: Inductive Study Guide   *The beautiful music heard on today’s episode is by Katie Cobbs*

 Ep. 34 - Philippians - Introduction | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 32:10

On this week’s episode we are excited to start a new series in which we will be walking through the book of Philippians together.  In the first half of the episode we review why studying the Bible is so important and why Biblical Literacy is something that we are so passionate about.  In the second half, we give you a glimpse into how the church at Philippi was started. We would love for you to join us as we study this book chapter by chapter and verse by verse over the next 5 weeks!   Quotes: “The Bible is infallible and it also equips us for good work.”   “There is no true knowledge of self apart from the knowledge of God.” -John Calvin   “It is god’s revealed word for all men, for all times. Holy scripture does not consist of individual passages, it is a unit and is intended to be used as such” -Dietrich Bonhoeffer   “The Bible is not changing, but the Holy Spirit is revealing new things to us through His word.”   “Everything we do is a chance to put God’s glory on display and to share the gospel.”   Resources: Inductive Study Guide   *The beautiful music heard on today’s episode is by Katie Cobbs*

 Ep. 33 - Marriage - A Helper Fit for Him | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 40:35

Is being a submissive wife outdated?  We don’t believe it is! This episode is a very vulnerable conversation about what submission is according to scripture, how we practically live this out in the day to day, and how we can persevere when it’s not easy.  We both admit that this is NOT always easy and we definitely struggle, but we know that because our creator God designed our roles, submission as a wife is a beautiful thing! Quotes: “Submission is the happy response to a husband’s biblical leadership.” -John Piper   “Submission is the defined calling of a wife to honor and affirm her husband’s leadership, and so help to carry it through according to her gifts.” -John Piper   “Joyful and intelligent submission to the husband’s leadership”   “As a wife we are a helper fit for him.  We are to help him execute his primary position.”   “Submission is so much more about a disposition than it is about a set of behaviors.” -John Piper   “All frustrations come from unmet expectations.” -Matt Chandler   “It’s important to remember that they’re growing in their sanctification, through the Holy Spirit, not through our nagging.”   “By using Christ’s relationship to his church to illustrate what Christian marriage ought to be, Paul highlights the husband’s special responsibility as the wife’s leader and protector and the wife’s calling to accept her husband in that role.  The distinction of roles does not however imply that the wife is inferior as a person, but as God’s image bearers, the husband and the wife have equal dignity and value and are to fulfill their role in the relationship on the basis of mutual respect that is rooted in recognition of this fact.” -J.I.  Ep. 32 - Marriage - Q & A with our Husbands | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 32:06

Episode 32 might be our favorite episode yet because we had the joy of interviewing our husbands!!! Yes, we love spending time with them even if it’s while recording a podcast. We are so thankful that Taylor and Jonathan took the time to sit down and share their thoughts and their hearts with us and our listeners. We discuss ways that we can show them respect as well as what we can do in order that they continue to feel loved and desired even through the tough seasons of life  We also address some things we might not always do so great and a few practical tips for a healthy and biblical marriage. You might even discover a couple of fun facts about our guys! We would love for you to listen in! It is our prayer that The Lord will use this conversation to encourage you and to inspire conversations with your spouse that will continue to strengthen and grow your marriage in Christ!   Quotes: “Make it a priority to spend intentional time with each other.”   “Respect and encourage each other to have individual hobbies and interests. Make time for them to have that time by themselves to refresh.”   “Your kids are going to leave your house some day so live in preparation for that. Teach them and train them, but also invest in your relationship with your spouse.”   “She’s lying if she says she doesn’t like gifts.”   “Pour yourself out for your family and to your family.”   “Serve each other 100% of the time and if you’re both doing that without expecting anything in return it’ll be a happy place.”   “Our marriage should be a representation of who God is. God is Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, three distinct persons, but submitting to each other, somewhat dependent on each other, pointing to each other, but yet they are one.”   “We have 5 daughters between our two families. The importance of showing them a Godly marriage is huge because we’re not only raising 5 girls, but 5 brides.”   “When you get married you’re entering into a covenant for life. We things get tough we need to look at our spouse and say I’m not going anywhere!”   *The beautiful music heard on today’s episode is by Katie Cobbs*

 Ep. 31 - Marriage | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 36:05

This week’s episode is the first in a short series on marriage.  We believe that marriage is one of God’s greatest gifts to us. Throughout the Bible we can see God’s beautiful design for this covenant between a man and a woman.  In this episode we discuss exactly what marriage is according to the Bible. Why is marriage a covenant and not a contract? How is it a picture of Christ and the Church?  What is the ultimate purpose of marriage? Is your spouse really “the one?” We would love for you to listen in on our conversation surrounding these questions and more!       Quotes: “Marriage is to be an exclusive relationship between one man and one woman wherein the two become “one flesh,” being unified physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually.  It is intended to last for life. The union is secured by a sacred vow and covenant and consummated by physical union.” -R.C. Sproul   “Marriage is a permanent, exclusive, public, legal commitment to share every part of your life with somebody.” -Tim Keller   “Marriage is God’s showcase of God’s covenant keeping grace.” -John Piper   “Marriage isn’t just a covenant between you and your spouse, but it’s a covenant with God.”   “If we want to live in the blessing that God has given us there is an order for a reason and it is for our good and for God’s glory. We need to be intentional about living in that.”   “If you feel like there’s a void inside of you, it’s God that’s going to fill that, not your spouse.”   “Anytime you are in close community with other sinners, there is a refining process that will happen.”   “The whole narrative of the the Bible fits together and impacts our everyday lives.”   Resources: ESV Study Bible The Mingling of Souls by Matt Chandler   *The beautiful music heard on today’s episode is by Katie Cobbs*

 Ep. 30 - Q & A with Erin and Kacie | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 47:08

On this week’s episode of the Adorned Podcast we tackled some questions that you, our amazing listeners submitted and it was so much fun!!!  We talk about everything from what the church’s role should be when it comes to addressing tough subjects such as pornography, to date night ideas, to our best “life advice” and much more in between.  Thank you to everyone that sent in questions. Like we’ve said many times, we are learning and growing alongside all of you and it was such a joy to really dig into these important topics!   Quotes:  “When you are a Christian you have a mission.  You get to spend your life getting to know God and make Him known.”  “It’s important that we come alongside each other and point each other back to the truth.”  “Addressing guilt makes YOU look better, but addressing conviction makes GOD look better.”    “Reading your Bible is a sure way to meet with God.” “The man and the woman have were created unique by God, both in the image of God, equal in dignity, value, and worth.  But they have been meant to complement one another, not to compete against one another. The weaknesses of the the one are strengthened by the strengths of the other.  The strengths of the other are made even stronger by the strengths of the other. This is a complementarian relationship. Where the men are being men and the women are being women.  When that happens you have the type of human flourishing that the Bible commends and that if we would be willing to walk in it our joy will increase and God’s glory will be seen all the more brightly and our hearts would be more satisfied in Him.” -Matt Chandler   *The beautiful music heard on today’s episode is by Katie Cobbs*

 Ep. 29 - Community - Community's Role in Suffering with Rocky Bush | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 41:42

This week as we wrap up our series on community, we had the privilege of hearing Rocky Bush share her heart and tell her story about how God used her community in a time of pain and suffering.  We are so very thankful to Rocky for being vulnerable and even making us cry because we believe that this episode is so very important no matter what season of life you are in. Like we discuss in the episode, James 1 says “consider it pure joy WHENever you face trials of many kinds.”  Everyone is going to walk through seasons of difficulty. Whether you are the one relying on your community to lift you up or maybe it’s your turn to be that community for someone else, the Bible is clear that we need each other. We should be there to constantly point each other back to the cross and back to God.  Living in true, godly community can be messy at times, but when it functions as it should , it can really be oh so beautiful!   Quotes: “We may feel like we’re at the end of our rope, but we’re never at the end of out hope.  That hope is found in God and community is there to remind us of that. Community is there to constantly remind us of the cross and to help us stay focused on God.  They are there to celebrate the good times, but they’re also there for the times of suffering and they continue to point us back to the cross, to lift us up with their prayers and to be there for us.”      “Asking for help doesn’t make you weak, asking for help makes you stronger because you are defeating the enemy in that moment.”   “It’s ok to not be ok”   “In those times of suffering you can lose sight of what is true, so spending time in The Word reminds you of what really is true.  It gives you something that’s not shifting even when it feels like everything else is.”   “Suffering, pain and death are part of this world in which live. If we look at that suffering and judge the character of God by it then we are missing the point. It is what God has done about it that shows the heart of God.”   Resources: ESV Study Bible   *The beautiful music heard on today’s episode is by Katie Cobbs*

Ep. 28 - Community - Community within the Body of Christ | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 42:28

In this week’s episode we’re continuing our series on community by discussing community within the Body of Christ. Sometimes we become so focused on our individual churches that we forget we are a part of a much bigger community of believers. The Bible speaks to this topic so much! Join us as we dive into why being in community with the Body of Christ is important as well as how to practically live this out.   Quotes: “Christian community exists when believers connect with each other in authentic and loving ways that encourage growth in Christ. They engage in transparent relationships that cultivate celebrate and make evident Christ’s love for all the world” Adelle Calhoun “As believers we all have the same identity in Christ. Our foundation is the gospel and our mission is to spread that gospel. “ “Just because someone doesn’t agree with you doesn’t mean that they aren’t part of the body of Christ. You are still to love them as brothers and sisters.” “It is in the midst of a difference that we have our golden opportunity. When everything is going well and we are all standing around in a nice little circle, there is not much to be seen by the world. But when we come to the place where there is a real difference, and we exhibit uncompromised principles but at the same time observable love, then there is something that the world can see, something they can use to judge that these really are Christians, and that Jesus has indeed been sent by the Father.” -Francis Schaeffer “The Church as one unified body is the bride of Christ.” “Where the Spirit of God is there must be love, and if I have once known and recognized any man to be my brother in Christ Jesus, the love of Christ constraineth me no more to think of him as a stranger or foreigner, but a fellow citizen with the saints. Now I hate High Churchism as my soul hates Satan; but I love George Herbert, although George Herbert is a desperately High Churchman. I hate his High Churchism, but I love George Herbert from my very soul, and I have a warm corner in my heart for every man who is like him. Let me find a man who loves my Lord Jesus Christ as George Herbert did and I do not ask myself whether I shall love him or not; there is no room for question, for I cannot help myself; unless I can leave off loving Jesus Christ, I cannot cease loving those who love him.” -Charles Spurgeon “If we run from everything that seems different to us, we might be missing out on a blessing.” Resources: Why You Must Pursue Church Unity - Article by Chris Casaldo What is Christian Unity - Article by John Piper ESV Study Bible   *The beautiful music heard on today’s episode is by Katie Cobbs*

 Ep. 27 - Community - Accountability with Hannah Kalk | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 37:37

We are continuing our series on community by discussing accountability with our sweet friend, Hannah Kalk. This is a tough subject, but Hannah helps us break it down in a biblical and grace-filled way. This episode is full of so much wisdom on why accountability is important, where it’s found in the Bible, and how we can speak the truth in love to those within our community.   Quotes: “Accountability is speaking the truth in love with the intention of inspiring growth and maturity and fulfilling the mission given by Christ” “Accountability should not be given with the intention to cause harm, but the intention to give grace.” “Am I trying to make disciples of who I am or am I trying to make disciples of Christ?” “Judgemental and hypocritical is not a specific stance on a sin, but it is an attitude” “You are not God. You are not there to convict them, but you are there to share words with them.” “You can’t be open to accountability and clinging to pride at the same time.”   Resources: Speaking the Truth in Love by Ruth N.
