The police look to the partiers as the prime suspects: was it the guy in the devil mask, the bank robber, the construction worker? As investigators comb through forensic evidence, witness testimony, DNA, and even consult with a psychic, they zero in on one suspect in particular. But for what reason? Host and reporter Matthew Shaer (Over My Dead Body) returns to the scene of the crime, speaks with everyone about a night that still haunts them years later. It’s a series about race and policing, mislaid justice, cutting-edge science, and the kinds of weighty choices that cops and prosecutors make every day -- choices that, once made, are difficult to reverse.   Listen to SUSPECT: wondery.fm/Suspect_TCAllTheTime See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

 Thomas Olsen | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:13:33

Birna Brjansdottir disappeared on January 14, 2017, after a night out with friends in Iceland. The 20-year-old sales assistant lived with her mother and routinely walked home after a night at the bars. This was a common practice in Iceland because their crime rate, and especially their homicide rate, was so low. But, Birna met a complete stranger named Thomas Olsen who was determined to end her life. Join Mike and Gibby as they head to Iceland to discuss Thomas Olsen and the murder of Birna. Thomas Olsen was a 25-year-old fisherman from Greenland who was set to board a fishing vessel at the port after he murdered Birna. But, he was not alone at the time that Birna disappeared and the police had a hard time figuring out whether Thomas or his friend Nikolai was the main suspect. The evidence finally led them to Thomas but a good deal of international diplomacy had to happen to make the arrest.  Winston Moseley | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:14:52

Psychologists have cited her case for decades as an example of the bystander effect. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the life and crimes of Winston Moseley. Most people are probably not as familiar with his name as they are with the name of Kitty Genovese. But, Moseley killed others and committed many other crimes. The New York Times reported that 38 eyewitnesses watched Winston murder Kitty and did nothing to help. Although there were a few witnesses, this staggering number is false. Today we’ll discuss who Winston was, why he attacked Kitty, his other crimes, and the truth about who witnessed her murder.
