Slip Into Our Genes: Analyzing Ancestry and Genetic Polymorphisms | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:13:23

We've both been big fans of Dr. Rhonda Patrick's nutrition science podcast, Found My Fitness, for some time now. She's insanely intelligent, and brings on guests from all spectrums of science. One of Dr. Patrick's fascinations is genetics, and how specific variations within individual genes affect our disease risk and nutrient absorption and how that affects our healthspan, known as genetic polymorphisms. Of course, only about 20% of our general chronic disease risk is due to genes alone, and the other 80% or so is due to lifestyle (so things like diet, relationships, environment, and exercise). However, we believe it's important to learn about and experiment on ourselves, and do whatever we possibly can to reduce the risk of dying from otherwise preventable means. And thrive as humans, maximizing our potential. So, in true TFF fashion, we nerded out. A few weeks ago, we each decided to take the basic 23andme ancestry test (pay $100, spit in a tube, send tube to lab for analysis) to sequence our genome. You can then take the raw genetic data and put it through a special software created by Dr. Patrick that looks at the various polymorphisms of relevance. We thought it would be a cool episode to discuss each of our results and what they mean, and just like we love to do, zoom in to zoom out. We discuss each of our ancestry data and the results of our genetic polymorphism testing in detail, and then have a more general conversation about how to interpret these findings. We aren't geneticists or doctors, and aren't affiliated or sponsored by 23andMe or Dr. Patrick. We just think science is cool and learning about ourselves in a different way is also cool. Cool? Hope you guys and gals enjoy the show! -Jackson and Aaron P.S: Here's an interesting video from Dr. Patrick on this subject! Sign up for our mailing list, fool!  How To Survive Thanksgiving | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:02:15

Let's face it. Thanksgiving is a pretty tough holiday to navigate for us on vegan/plant-based diets. With family coming together and often being the outsider when it comes to diet on the holiday focused on gluttony of eating animal products and other unhealthy foods, it can be intimidating to maintain your routine and confidence. It doesn't have to be this way, though. This week on the show, we discuss our best tips for overcoming mainly the social struggles of Thanksgiving for the plant-based person, but also touch on the food side and our advice for navigating the Thanksgiving holiday (but it applies to any holiday as well for the most part). As controversial and gluttonous as Thanksgiving can be, it's incredibly important to remember the underlying theme, which is to be grateful and thankful for the amazing things we have. To spend time with family and break bread together, sharing stories and laughter. We are grateful for you. For your support, your time, and your shared passion to make the world a better place, so thank you! Keep doing your thing, set an example, and be chill this Thursday. Happy holidays, y'all! -Aaron and Jackson Subscribe to our new email list where each week I'll send out a newsletter with a compilation of articles/blogs/podcasts/science/recipes/other cool shit that we are into that week straight to your inbox so you can get some more resources beyond the podcast.  The Cycling-Fueled Spiritual Quest of Jackson Foster | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:38:20

Jackson Foster is on an epic cycling-fueled spiritual quest from Alaska to South America (and beyond). After taking the plunge as a full on minimalist digital nomad, Jackson has simplified his life to the bare necessities — carrying everything he owns and needs on his touring bike, including his entire vlogging setup. Yep, he's daily vlogging his experience from the road, sharing the insane beauty of his journey and the people he's met. As a result, he's had a lot of time to think and reflect, and has a lot of amazing stories and spiritual philosophies to share. I caught up with Jackson for the second time on this show while he was in Oregon, on his way south from Alaska. We talk about his bike setup, crazy stories from the road, what he's been eating to fuel himself, and then get deep on greater philosophy and spirituality as it relates to things like "do epic shit" and lifestyle design. It was one of the best conversations we've had, so really excited to share it with you. Be sure to follow Jackson's adventure over on his YouTube channel, Plantriotic. -Jackson I will be in Los Angeles for the upcoming Circle V event and co-hosting a run/yoga/food/nutrition talk in Santa Monica/Venice this Sunday, November 19th.  Cycling 101: Gear, Mechanics, Training, and Nutrition | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:25:36

I have been riding road bikes for half of my time on this planet. It's so deeply intertwined with my day to day life that it's almost second nature to me. It has brought so many amazing experiences and relationships from riding the highest paved road in North America to riding with my friends Gruff and Ian in the Alps, and I want you to experience that sensation in your own life. We recently did a podcast about exercise and redefining our relationship to it, and discussed how we want to go more in depth on specific sports that we have expertise with. From the gear to nutrition, I felt like it would be helpful for everyone interested in the sport of cycling to hear more specifics on how to do it - a sort of Cycling 101 class. For beginners and experts alike, there's a ton of great information in here, as well as a special surprise from Vegan Athletic Apparel ;). I covered a lot, and hope it's helpful! If I missed anything you were hoping I'd cover, please shoot me an email to tfflifestyle@gmail.com, and be sure to hop in the Thought For Food Club Facebook group to continue the conversation. Aaron is taking the rest of November off of the podcast to recharge, disconnect, and focus on his family, so the podcast will be much more boring. He'll be back though! Interested in the oh-so sexy and functionally high-quality Vegan Athletic Apparel? They have offered up listeners of this podcast 15% off your order through December 31st by using discount code "TFF" at checkout. Their new winter line is absolutely EPIC, and I can confidently say that this is my favorite kit I've worn. Snatch up this deal, folks. Visit www.veganathleticapparel.com to learn more. I will be in Los Angeles from November 17th-27th and will most likely be bringing my bike. If you’re in the area, let’s play bikes.  Paul Shapiro on the Status of Animal Welfare in 2017 and the Power of the Clean Meat Revolution | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:02

There exists a grand order of elite animal rights advocates that have quite literally been changing the game for how animals, from chickens to wolves, are treated in this world. Like the Justice League for animals, these plant-based superheroes often work behind the scenes on changing policy or technology, creating a powerful ripple effect that has improved the lives of billions of animals in recent years. You might have heard my conversation with Nathan Runkle, founder of Mercy For Animals, who is one of these heroes. And today, I’m beyond excited to bring another animal rights superhero to your ears, the one, the only, Paul Shapiro.   Paul is the vice president of policy at the Humane Society of the United States, one of the organizations leading the way to a better future for animals through animal rescue, care, protection, and advocacy. Paul focuses on shifting the political landscape towards advancing animal welfare in this country. He began his career for animals in high school, becoming vegan after learning about the way industrially farmed animals were treated, and founded the animal advocacy organization Compassion Over Killing. While there, he took part in innumerable actions and campaigns to improve the lives of animals. In 2005, he started with the Humane Society of the US as head of farm animal protection, and was integral in reducing battery cages, gestation crates, and veal crates in a variety of settings and states. Paul has authored a forthcoming book on the clean meat movement coming out in January 2018, and is an inductee into the animal rights hall of fame. Hashtag legend. Paul and I sat down for this conversation the evening before he delivered a powerful talk at TEDx Sun Valley on how we are better than how we treat animals. We talked about how his early days as an activist have led to the work he does now, the current state of animal welfare policy, effective altruism, and of course, clean meat technology and what that means for saving animals. It was incredibly inspiring to hang out with Paul and his girlfriend Toni Okamoto (who was also recently on the podcast!) in Idaho for a couple of days. I’m honored to call these two friends and to bring you their wisdom, and hope this conversation with Paul gives you the hope and energy to join us in improving the lives of animals. We must take action. We must make a difference. Go follow Paul on Twitter @PaulHShapiro and definitely be sure to stay tuned for the release of his upcoming book. If you’re a regular listener of the podcast, you probably think I sound like a broken record when it comes to my thoughts and feelings about plant-based and clean meat technologies, but honestly I can’t stress their importance and potential for changing the world enough. Our friends over at Plant Positive Running have an awesome new cookbook out for anyone new to the plant-based lifestyle and specifically for endurance athletes and runners. They are generous enough to offer listeners of the pod a special discount. Visit plantpositiverunning.com/cookbook and use the code EPICDUMPS to receive 40% off! And to be clear, this isn’t a paid advertisement and we aren’t getting anything in return for this offer, just helping out our fellow plant-powered athletes up in northern Idaho spread the message of eating more plants....

 What’s The Deal With Fasting? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:30:28

Intermittent fasting. Water fasting. Time restricted eating. Juice cleanses. Many of us have heard about these things, often knocking them as fads or extreme ways of living. However, there seems to be a lot of buzz lately about the benefits of fasting. So what does the science say? Well, you're in the right place. After hearing about the evidence behind time restricted feeding or intermittent fasting on Dr. Rhonda Patrick's podcast and elsewhere, Aaron decided to try it out for himself. Alongside a regular sauna routine combined with an overall healthy, whole foods plant-based diet, he has seen profound benefits. From sleep quality to endurance gains, we've both felt the positive effects of eating our food within a 9 or 10 hour window during the day. But how does this actually work? What's happening metabolically and physiologically to stimulate these effects? In true TFF What's The Deal fashion, we set off to find out. It's been quite some time since we recorded a WTD episode, and that's due to the immense amount of research and time it requires. With Aaron's new kid on the block, changing jobs and moving, along with Jackson's travel and school schedule, we simply didn't have a ton of time to focus on this. But it's definitely worth the wait; we covered everything from how fasting can potentially prevent disease at the cellular level, to how we feel it should be implemented in a practical fashion in everyday life. We zoom in to zoom out, and discuss this through an objective and evidence-based approach, so we hope you learn something new! It's a bit of a longer episode, so hang in there, take a break if needed, and enjoy. -Jackson and Aaron Show Notes Studies/resources referenced: Found My Fitness (Dr. Rhonda Patrick): https://www.foundmyfitness.com/ Dr. Ray Cronise: http://hypothermics.com/home/ 382 Day Fast: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2495396/pdf/postmedj00315-0056.pdf   Intermittent Fasting Meta Analysis: http://www.annualreviews.org/doi/full/10.1146/annurev-nutr-071816-064634?url_ver=Z39.88-2003&rfr_id=ori%3Arid%3Acrossref.org&rfr_dat=cr_pub%3Dpubmed&   Circadian Biology: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12015613?dopt=Abstract https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3946160/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5388543/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20228939?dopt=Abstract https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19255424?dopt=Abstract https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23899596?

Dr. Kristin Keim on Exercise Addiction, Eating Disorders in Athletes, and the Mental Side of Sport | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:30

We have spent a considerable amount of time discussing things like exercise addiction and the mental side of sport on this podcast, but we've been searching for an expert on the subject to come talk about it from their professional perspective. After learning about Dr. Kristin Keim through some mutual friends and other podcasts, she seemed absolutely perfect for this. Dr. Keim received her doctorate in clinical psychology and her master's in sports psychology from JFK University. She’s a certified consultant in the Association for Applied Sport Psychology and is a member of the US Olympic Committee Sport Psychology and Mental Training Registry. She’s done research on traumatic brain injuries in athletes, athlete identity, depression in athletes, and the transition out of sport. Her philosophy towards working with athletes is integrative, focusing on things like meditation, motivational interviewing, stress management, and beyond. She has a history as a competitive cyclist and dancer, and has combined those experiences with skills in mental health to work with Olympians to young athletes. We discussed so much, including: * Her background and how her experience as an athlete has influenced her practice * Exercise addiction, and how to address it * Eating disorders in athletes * Why happy racers go faster * The traits of the most "successful" athletes she's worked with There was so much more to talk about with Dr. Keim, so we will definitely be having a part 2 party with her (so Aaron can also attend). I really enjoyed this conversation, and hope it's valuable to you if you're an athlete or know an athlete that struggles with these things.
