126: How to Achieve Anything with a Lot of Hustle with Anthony Trucks | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today I am very excited to announce our guest, Anthony “Truck Stop” Trucks. Anthony is a former NFL player, gym owner, father, and motivational speaker. He grew up facing adversity at every turn, being in foster care, suffering abuse, losing his adoptive mother to MS, failing in school, and the list goes on. Anthony decided that he wasn’t going to be hindered by his upbringing, and took things into his own hands through grit and hard work. He has since played in the NFL, owned a successful gym, become a father of three, and is an international speaker on motivation. Anthony has a deep desire to leave an impact and a legacy that improves the world in the best way we can. Anthony Trucks’ Background * Anthony was placed into a foster home at a three years old.  He experienced physical and mental abuse, starvation, and torture. All before the age of 6 before he was placed into a home where he would eventually be adopted as the sole black person in a poor all white family 8 years later. * He eventually took up football in high school, and through hard work, he became an all-star in college and went on to play in the NFL. * After his career was cut short due to injury, he opened gym, which, again, after years of hard work and almost losing it a couple of times, he built is up to a successful six-figure business. * Anthony is now a father of three and after closing his gym to pursue a mission of helping many more people, he now travels around the world teaching people how to get confidence, clarity, new tools, techniques, and self-belief to finally break through their barriers to get what they want most out of life.  this through my 3-step Trust Your Hustle process: See, Sacrifice, Sustain. Highlights from this Episode * Anthony’s background in foster homes, and the challenges he faced on a daily basis. * The thing he heard a girl in his class say, that completely changed the way he looked at the world. From there he decided that he was going to be great, and work hard to achieve what he wanted to achieve. * Anthony takes the approach that the best thing you can do to change is to start working. He believes that it’s important to not overthink it and to take steps to move closer toward your goal. * The lessons Anthony has learned along the way, and the framework he teaches so that people can use to achieve their own dreams which he describes as his “Trust Your Hustle Process:” * See * Sacrifice * Sustain * The things people can do to get out of their comfort zone, when they know what needs to be done but can’t bring themselves to do it. Motivation needs to come from within and Anthony finds a way to bring that out of people. * The story behind Anthony’s catch phrase, “Trust Your Hustle”. Hint: it came up accidentally. * The importance of blocking off time to achieve your goals. We also get into the concept of ‘training your friends’ of what to expect from you. If they know you have to make 1000 putts a day, then let it be known you can’t hangout unless you make 1000 putts. Caddy Shack or Happy Gilmore? Happy Gilmore Who would you spend a day on the course with and why? Obama, because he would know a lot of things about the world that no one else knows.  125: Successes, Struggles, and Lessons Learned on Tour with Scott Stallings | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:13:28

Today we have an extra special treat for you. Our guest today is none other than Scott Stallings, three-time PGA tour winner. Scott first started playing golf when he was young, and at the age of 12 he gave up all other sports to focus on golf. He was inspired by Tiger Woods to ultimately take up the sport professionally. After missing his PGA Tour card by a single stroke at Q-School in 2009, Scott persisted through Q-School in 2010 and earned his PGA card by finishing T-11.  He eventually went on to win the Greenbrier Classic – his first PGA Tour victory. Since then he has won two more PGA events, The True South Classic 2012, and the Farmers Insurance Open in 2014. Along with his successes on the PGA Tour, Scott has also had a few struggles along the way, including a banned substance suspension in 2015 amidst a health battle that has since changed his perspective on his fitness, nutrition, and his overall lifestyle on and off the course. Scott Stallings’ Background * Scott was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. He attended Oak Ridge High School in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and was an all-state golfer and a four-year member of the Dean’s List. * Scott quit all sports at age 12 except golf after going to the 1997 Masters and watching Tiger Woods dominate the field. * Spent his rookie season in 2011 blogging for BNET, the CBS Interactive Business Network. * Scott won the Greenbrier Classic in July 2011 for his first PGA Tour victory. * His biggest thrill in golf was teaching the sport to wounded veterans in the Army * Won the True South Classic in 2012 * Won the Farmer’s Insurance Open in 2014 * Suffered a 3-month suspension from the PGA tour for a banned substance charge (which was for a $10 over the counter supplement that he took per Dr. recommendations and once he was made aware of the situation, turned himself in to the PGA Tour). Highlights from this Episode * Scott’s life growing up in Massachusetts, and how he ended up playing golf. Scott was heavily influenced by Tiger Woods, and Scott was inspired by him to take up golf professionally. * How Scott deals with missing crucial shots, and how he finds the strength to keep going and not get phased. Scott places his faith in God, and has a great network of family and friends to support him through the tough times. * Scott tells the story of how he took a supplement to help with a health issue he was facing. Scott was given a routine drug test, and passed. He therefore didn’t give it much thought after, until one day he realized the supplement was potentially on the banned substances list. He turned himself into the drug testing authorities, but regardless, was given a three-month suspension. Despite the bad situation, Scott was able to use the time off to focus on his health and other things that had fallen by the wayside. * The health issues Scott was facing, turned out to be quite serious. This lead him to put much for focus and energy into staying fit and healthy while working on his game. * We talk about the specific changes that Scott has made to his health and lifestyle. Scott used to have terrible back pain which effected his game, but after working on it, he has not had any trouble with it whatsoever. * Scott’s weekly routine, including playing schedule and workouts. He now has a huge focus on mobility, and doesn’t do any ‘golf specific’ workouts. We talk about how Scott knows what he needs to spend most of his time on from week to week. How would you describe yourself out on the course? Pretty laid back. I try not to get too high or low, but I like when I hit a good shot! Caddy Shack or Happy Gilmore?  124: Perform Under Pressure Like a Navy Seal Sniper with Eric Davis | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:03:28

Today I am very excited to announce our guest, Eric Davis.  Eric Davis served our country as a US Navy SEAL and decorated veteran of the War on Global Terror. He’s been recognized as one of the premier sniper instructors in the US military and served as a Master Training Specialist at the SEAL Sniper school. In fact, Eric trained both Marcus Luttrel and Chris Kyle, who you might know from the books and movies Lone Survivor and American Sniper. Eric is an expert in technical and physical surveillance and was part of an elite group hand-selected to perform intelligence collection in some of the scariest places in the world. He spent years developing and writing curriculum for the SEAL teams and was instrumental in reducing the failure rate of the SEAL Sniper course. And we’ll discuss how golf had a big influence on how he did this. Since his time in the SEALS teams, Eric has become a speaker, educator, and coach in the world of corporate performance and leadership training. He is the author of “Raising Men: Lessons Navy Seals learned from their training and taught to their sons” and his upcoming book and project: “Habits of Heroes: Being the Hero in Your Own Life” Eric Davis’ Background * Eric has been recognized as one of the premier sniper instructors in the U.S. military and has served as a Master Training Specialist at the SEAL sniper school in Coronado, CA. * Eric was instrumental in significantly reducing the failure rate, of Naval Special Warfare’s internationally recognized Sniper course. * Since departing from the SEAL teams, Eric has worked in corporate performance, sales and leadership training bringing an unprecedented amount of innovation, efficiency and structure to the domain of business and personal performance. This can also apply to helping a golfer making a putt (in a less pressure-filled context obviously!) * What people can do if they don’t have a great self-image. * Eric quotes a study that contrasts people who are told they are ‘smart’ vs people who are told they’re hard workers. Today I am very excited to announce our guest, Olly Foster. Olly is the developer of the Action Reaction Training (ART) program. After seeing so many ungoverned training and nutritional plans that simply offered no support or guidance, he decided he had to take things into his own hands. Olly’s fitness journey began at the age of fourteen, after coming last in a school cross country race. Disappointed with his performance, he signed up to the local gym where his love of fitness began. With a degree in nutrition and over fifteen years of training experience Olly is the go to fitness coach for many other fitness professionals who want to learn from the best in the business and expand their knowledge. With the ART program, Olly has now opened up this knowledge to anyone who is willing to learn. Olly has also recently picked up the game of golf and is hooked. He plays and practices as much as his schedule will allow and has even made some adjustments in his training routines to make sure he is preparing his body for the links. Olly Foster’s Background * At the age of seventeen Olly was signed for a semi-pro rugby league heading towards a promising pro career, however at eighteen injury, struck ending his sporting dream. * Over the following fifteen years, Olly dedicated his life to professional studies and working to become a renowned figure in the fitness industry. * Olly is a successful fitness model and senior personal trainer at the world renowned Ultimate Performance, appearing on multiple fitness magazine covers including Men’s Health and Muscle & Fitness multiple times. * He is passionate about sharing his knowledge and helping others attain their lifestyle goals. After 1-2 weeks of ketosis, Olly’s students often report having much more physical and mental energy throughout the day. * The most important things Olly gets new clients doing in the gym. He generally always starts with hip mobility and getting the glutes firing. Most people’s lifestyle today makes them very restricted in these areas. * How Olly has come to take up golf, and how he approaches the game. * We run through a hypothetical case study of a golfer looking to improve their fitness to optimize their game.  119: How to Win even when you Lose! with Sam Weinman | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 46:51

Today I am very excited to announce our guest, Sam Weinman. Sam is the digital editor for golf digest, and is the author of the new book WIN AT LOSING: How Our Biggest Setbacks Can Lead To Our Greatest Gains. Sam’s insights into the mental and emotional side of how we deal with losses shows us that in many cases, winning isn’t everything.  In fact, it might be argued that we may learn and grow more from our losses and struggles than we do from our wins.  In his book he interviews some very influential figures in sport, Hollywood, politics, and more all of whom have at one time or another, lost on the biggest stage. From all of these experiences and conversations, Sam shares with us some of the lessons he has learned and how we can use these to make us even stronger on the golf course. Sam Weinman’s Background * Sam is the digital editor for Golf Digest. * Prior to that he covered golf and the NHL for The Journal Newsin Westchester, N.Y., and wrote for publications that included Golf Digest, USA Today, Golf World, Yahoo Sports, ESPN the Magazine, and Sports Illustrated. * He gravitated towards golf journalism in college, after originally being interested in fiction writing. * Sam was very into hockey as a kid, and didn’t take up golf until college. * Sam has been honored with multiple first place award in the Associated Press Sports Editors and golf Writers Association of America writing contests. Highlights from this Episode * What made Sam decide to write about losing, rather than winning. In a roundabout way, the book ties in to success by talking about how to respond to failure, which is a big part of winning. * We get into a number of examples of real people in sport or otherwise, who have failed and bounced back to become successful. * In golf, Greg Norman is a key example of someone who has handled losing extremely well. We talk about Sam’s conversations with Greg, and what was going through his head at the time. * Tiger Woods, and how he went from being the greatest golfer in the world, to falling off the pedestal, and how these experiences may shape his return to the game. * How golfers can take the lessons taught in Sam’s book, and apply them on the golf course. Sam writes regularly on the topic with Golf Digest, and backs up his finding with psychological research. * Where Sam stands on a ‘reward everything’ mentality, such as the one we see in most schools, where everyone gets a trophy. Without giving too much away, Sam believes it is crucial for kids to realize that they will lose at certain points in their lives, and they should learn how to adapt to that. * The biggest things Sam has learned in his research and writing of the book. Caddy Shack or Happy Gilmore? Caddy Shack Who would you like to spend a day on the course with?  My grandfather and Barack Obama at Augusta What is the biggest takeaway you want people to get out of your book? Realizing that there is an opportunity in every downfall and failure, and to see the upside in losing.  118: Are you playing with a Fighter’s Mindset? with Charlie Brenneman aka “The Spaniard” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today I am very excited to announce our guest, Charlie Brenneman, aka “The Spaniard.” If you’re a mixed martial arts or UFC fan, you may recognize Charlie from his time in the octagon, but these days you’re more likely to find Charlie at a book signing of his best-selling book Driven: My Unlikely Story from Classroom to Cage or speaking to/coaching athletes and business professionals. And while it seems a little strange to have a UFC fighter on a golf podcast (especially a fighter that doesn’t really golf!), Charlie’s story and his message resonates across all athletic endeavors, especially the mental side of golf. In 2007, Charlie left the comfort of his hometown and full-time job as a Spanish teacher to pursue a career in mixed martial arts. What started out as a dream soon turned into reality. After upsetting #6 ranked Rick Story in 2011, his life changed as he skyrocketed into the world rankings and went head-to-head with the best fighters in the world, such as UFC Champion Johnny Hendricks and current top-ranked light heavyweight Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. The key ingredient in his climb to the top is hard work. While illustrating specific principles and examples that helped propel him to the top of the fighting world, Charlie provides a very real, authentic look at what it takes to succeed in life. With over two decades of winning and losing on center stage, his mission is to share his insight and perspective with practical and relatable examples to help assist you in your journey. Subscribe to the 18STRONG Podcast on iTunes and stitcher by clicking the button below: Charlie Brenneman’s Background * Charlie has fought at every level of the industry, including an 11-fight UFC career. * He has transitioned his experiences as a professional fighter into professional speaking and mentoring. * Charlie has been knocked out cold on live television, and has lived out his own “Rocky” story in front of a million people. Highlights from this Episode * We talk about the parallels and differences of being on the tee box vs getting in the ring, staring down the guy across the mat who is looking to tear your head off * Charlie shares the mental processes he goes through before each fight, noting that he is at his best when he’s ‘not thinking’. * How Charlie gets his confidence. He wasn’t born with it and had to work hard for it. Charlie takes the approach of doing your absolute best at whatever it is you do, and believe that you can do anything. * The advice Charlie would give to the golfer when things don’t go as planned. Whether you lose a fight or have a bad round of golf, there are things you can do mentally to pick yourself back up and get into a positive mindset again. The key is to set a time frame that you allow yourself to feel bad, and once that time is up, move on. (eg the “10-day rule”) * How Charlie learns new skills – it comes down to hard work, and modelling other people who have the skills you want to learn. * Charlie’s real life ‘Rocky’ story. CaddyShack or Happy Gilmore? Happy Gilmore Who would you like to spend a day on the course with?  Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson at Kiawah Island If there were a cage match between Jason Day, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, who would come out on top?  Jordan Spieth  What are you most excited about moving forward?  To give people the confidence to change their lives.  117: Playing Better Golf by Hitting from the Opposite Side with Padraig Dooley | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today I am very excited to announce our guest, Padraig Dooley. Padraig is the owner of Drive Golf Performance, based out of Ireland. He is a former Irish international amateur golfer who went on to play in several professional tours, and is now passing on his experience to golfers as a PGA professional. His work is focused on the mission of getting golfers to play better golf. He does this in a number of ways, through things like fitness and mobility, having fun while practicing, swinging from your non-preferred side, and many others. In this episode Padraig tells an entertaining story involving an elephant and a few people in the trunk of his car – more on that in the episode! Subscribe to the 18STRONG Podcast on iTunes and stitcher by clicking the button below: Padraig Dooley’s Background * Has a degree in mathematics and statistics. * PGA professional, TPI certified, Trackman Certified Professional, Irish international, EuroPro Tour and Challenge Tour professional. * After his playing career, he decided to shift his efforts to helping others improve their game by sharing his experiences. Highlights from this Episode * Padraig’s approach to coaching, and how it’s different to most. He likes to focus on having fun and focusing on the better aspects of a golfer’s game, rather than just the weaknesses. * Swinging from the ‘wrong side’.  116: Redefining Performance through Movement with Brian Bradley | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 57:39

Today I am very excited to announce our guest, Brian Bradley. Brian has been working with Pete Egoscue, developing the Egoscue Method for 25+ years. Posture and pain are his mission, and he finds bringing this work to the world very rewarding. To see someone go from disability and depression due to chronic pain, and transform into the person they were meant to be is, in Brian’s view, awesome. Recently I spent some time with Brian at the World Golf Fitness Summit 2016 in New Orleans, LA.  It was there that I had the chance to experience first hand some of the work that Brian does with clients and patients.  His methods for teaching people to overcome their pain and maximize their performance are, to say the least, unconventional.  One look at the piece of equipment that he had us working on would’ve made you think we were getting ready to embark on an obstacle course more than get in a “workout.” But it is exactly Brian’s “out-of-the-box” approach that allows him to be so creative and effective in his methods whether working with athletes, armed forces, celebrities, or patients in pain. In this episode we discuss some of our experiences from the World Golf Fitness Summit and some of the amzing impact Brian has had on so many people, including the likes of Tony Robbins, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and many more. If you would like more on Brian’s Background or would simply like to hear the his earlier episode on posture and breathing, you can find that here . . . Episode 18. Brian Bradley’s Background * Brian has been with Egoscue for 25 years. * Met Pete Egoscue when he was working with Jack Nicklaus. * Jack was backing the expansion of Egoscue from their California location and branching into Florida. * Brian has worked with Nicklaus, Player, Palmer, Trevino, Tony Robbins, and many other high profile figures, as well as thousands of other individuals looking to either improve performance or simply take control of their pain. * He is now the Vice President of Egoscue University and speaks all over the world on the topics of pain, posture and performance.  He is has worked very closely over the years with TPI and many other governing bodies to share his experience and expertise. * Plus, the guy is just a riot to hang out with

114: Are you still Icing? with Gary Reinl the “Anti-Iceman” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

I am very excited to announce our guest today, Gary Reinl.  Gary is affectionately known as the “Anti-Iceman” based on his years of combing through the research of cryotherapy to ultimately figure out that this “tried and true” modality just may be an “illusionary” treatment after all! Gary has spent nearly forty years in the sports-medicine field, with diverse experiences ranging from training professional athletes, developing rehabilitation programs for injured workers, to pioneering the field of strength-building for women during the pregnancy year..Additionally, his ground-breaking senior strength-building protocol has now been implemented in more than 1,000 senior living facilities. Gary has authored three books, including Iced: The Illusionary Treatment Option, Making Mama Fit and the 2007 “fat loss” book Get Stronger, Feel Younger. **To see the thread of questions for Gary from this episode, go visit our Facebook page and get in on the conversation: 18STRONG Facebook page. Highlights from this Episode * Active recovery and why it is more effective than just resting. * How Gary came to learn that icing is ineffective for recovery, after studying many elite athletes from the MLB, NFL, MLS, NBA and more. * Why the RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevate) protocol came into existence, and how it was completely misinterpreted by the medical profession. * What actually happens within your body when you injure yourself. Inflammation, repair, remodel. We then get into reasons why ice is ineffective at helping your body react to the injury in that it prevents inflammation from happening. * How compression is also counter-intuitive to healing, by stopping the flow of fluid to and from the affected area. * How ice can seem to be helping, because it is numbing the pain. However, this is just delaying the healing process and creating the impression that things are getting better. * What you should do after an injury instead of icing. The key is to move around so the ‘cleanup crew’ (details in the show) can move freely around the injured area. Below is the video that started it all!  Here is Gary with Dr. Kelly Starrett on the MobilityWOD CaddyShack or Happy Gilmore? Happy Gilmore Who would you like to spend a day on the course with?
