It's a new dawn. It's a new day. You know how we feel. Pretty decent. This week we answer a question from the community, talk the new PS4 release Horizon Zero Dawn, sample Starbucks Single-Origin coffee, praise the simplicity of the Nintendo Switch + Zelda, explore Thingiverse, and close out the episode with a roundtable discussion of the latest Marvel offering, Logan. Spoilers abound so avoid unless you've already seen this amazing film.
This week, we sit down with Brad Woodard, Co-Founder of Brave the Woods. From the early days of Skillshare, to operating a design firm and running a GoFundMe, Brad has lots of experience (and wisdom) on how to wisely navigate workload. Additionally, Brad is connecting talented artists to our educators through his initiative Artists for Education. What a good dude.
And the award goes to... someone else! Let us tell you more of what you already know: Abstract: The Art of Design is a new Netflix documentary highlighting incredible creatives across varied mediums in a fun and respectful way. Control - the game by Mattox Shuler - is a must-play... even though it's tiny and easily lost. Listen for clarity on that remark. And finally, the Acadamy Awards are a thing that continues to happen while also remaining polarizing. Great!
Mattox Shuler is 50% of Keymaster Games and 100% impressive. Part creator of the games Control and Campy Creatures, Mattox is a game designer and Kickstarter veteran. Join us as we talk about the process of creating a game concept, play-testing, the importance of design and successfully funding a project. Here's a hint... just do it.
It's all fun and games until... well, it's all fun and games! This week two of the Masters are fresh off a trip to the happiest place on earth. Here's a hint: there is one mouse involved. The other Master has been camped out in front of a TV so he can bring you the freshest reviews. After a word from our sponsor, the Master's give their Oscar predictions, talk good times with old games (Dominion) and introduce you to the artistic goodness of Joey Chou. Very nice. Finally, check out the piece from our "Make Comic Sans Cool Again" contest, created by Taylor Ackerman aka Long Dog Design.
This week the Masters are excited to talk to the very talented artist / illustrator Kevin Wilson aka Ape Meets Girl! After discussing Kevin's background and how he translates design to printing, the Masters shift the discussion to his latest print release through Grey Matter Art, "Planet of the Apes". Finally, Kevin unveils his Leia art for the upcoming Leading Ladies Art Show.
The episode that just won't stop until it gets enough! We are joined by Andrew Kolb for another segment of Calculated Comics with Kolb, announce the winner of our Mof1 Epcot Challenge and talk Songbirds Guitar Museum, Campy Creatures and The Mothman Prophecies.
Let's get educational! Today we talk with illustrator and Skillshare teacher Hayden Aube! We dive deep into what it takes to be a Skillshare teacher and the practices that helped Hayden build a career from educating others. Here's a hint: buy a calendar. As an added bonus, the first 20 people to signup using the link below will get Hayden's Level Up Your Colours class for free!
This week the masters are mixing it up a bit. After going around the table and talking the new Matthew McConaughey film Gold, Alex Deligiannis and Conan Exiles, the group shifts the discussion to Mark Morris and the upcoming Cinepolis / Squared Co. Event for 30th Anniversary of The Princess Bride.
This week we are thrilled to be speaking with graphic designer and illustrator Tracie Ching. If you haven't seen Tracie's work before, stop reading and go check it out now. ... Isn't it mind-blowing?! She's talented, has a crazy list of clients to her name and is still excited about what she does and humble to boot. This interview was a blast to do and we know you'll enjoy it as much as we did.
One month down in 2017 and we're finally recovered from the holidays. Took us a minute. Patric starts the discussion with his review of the James McAvoy vehicle Split. Andrew follows it up with talk of his week: La La Land, The Magicians and the print "El Fauno" from Hero Complex Gallery. Luke finishes us up with talk of the documentary City of Gold and the NBC show The Good Place. Recommended watches for sure. After the break Patrick jumps back in with an extended review of the film The Founder featuring Michael Keaton, Nick Offerman and John Carroll Lynch. Although not without its flaws, it's a super solid watch and a film you will likely enjoy. The conversation moves to Luke and talk of the ward-winning virtual board game that is Civilization VI. It's a complex game that allows for very unique worlds and challenges. This game is worth it. Andrew finished out the master categories and the episode by introducing us to artist David Ardinaryas Lojay. David, in his whimsical style, manages to capture characters perfectly. It's good looking stuff you'll want to check out.
The Masters are excited to talk with Josh Holtsclaw, a graphic artist at Pixar. Even though the companies he's worked for may seem somewhat incongruent, Josh has woven a thread of design excellence and built an incredible portfolio leading to the pinnacle of creation that is Pixar. Listen as Josh talks his background, technical progression and shares the mindset that has led him through his career.
Excited to kick off another episode of pop-culture goodness featuring a new segment of Ten with Tom (Whalen), this time discussing his go-to tools for translating his creative ideas to the digital realm. This episode we talk Weiner (the new documentary following Anthony Weiner during his Mayoral campaign), review Man Seeking Woman and discuss the amazing technical feat that was Lost In London. We then take another trip around the table during our Master Categories and discuss the game ARK: Survival Evolved, SergAndDestroy aka BEATNINJA and his amazing care package and wrap it all up with a look at the Mevo camera by Livestream.
