Harvest Moon | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Hard to believe but this marks our 80th episode here at the Podcast Cafe! That is a hell of a lot of music mixes streaming in to your home, your ears, your mind, your soul, and its been nothing but a pleasure to serve up the freshest blends for the people since 2007. With autumn in full effect here in the Pacific Northwest, we concocted up a Harvest Moon mix, conceived of on the full moon earlier this month. It features highlights of some really, really good recent releases we've been enjoying lately, albums that no doubt will be populating our Favorites of 2012 list at the end of the year. The styles and genres vary, but as per usual, DJ Fundi has deftly blended them together into this smooth cocktail of mostly-mellow sounds (with some surprising exceptions, of course) —an inspired session blending the old with the new in a journey of sound, lyric & song. From acoustic to glitch, blues to grunge, americana folk to hipster anthems. Pour up another hot toddy — we recommend grinding your own cinnamon fresh — and enjoy! Artists include Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear, Cat Power, Hot Chip, Andrew Bird, Wye Oak, Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, Dr. John, GRiZ, The xx, Horse Feathers, Frank Ocean, M. Ward, Tom Waits and a few surprises…. Feedback encouraged: djfundi@podcastcafe.org.

What the Mixtape?! (Side Two) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Greetings friends near and far, met and unmet, DJ Playaduster here representing Destination Burning Man with Side Two of What the Mixtape? Get yourself ready for a hour long mix of electronic music based on DJs and producers who played at What the Festival?! in Oregon the last weekend of July 2012. This was the best festival my PNW Get Found crew and I have ever experienced off the playa and the rush of inspiration we felt in the White River canyon has carried over in to this 2 side music mix tape project. From the environment to the art to the people to the lighting to the vibes to the splash pool and ESPECIALLY to the expertly curated schedule of to-notch DJs, the organizers did it right. We can't thank them enough for all the special touches, large and small. We're going to explore some of the more experimental bass frequencies that What the Festival offered, including Sepalcure, Scuba and Sinjin Hawke, taste some acid crunk from Low Ryderz, get soothed with a long set from Emancipator and dabble in some forward-leaning low-end wavelengths from Gladkill, Bluetech, PhuturePrimitive and Sugarpill. Love, DJ Playaduster www.destinationburningman.com

What the Mixtape?! (Side One) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

We're just back from the first-ever What the Festival?! in the White River Canyon of Oregon and are so incredibly inspired by what went down there: an eclectic roster of top-shelf DJ talent dropping their jams through Function One soundsystems, the gorgeous landscape accentuated by art and light installations, lots of chill spaces full of kind and creative people, good food, minimal security and hilarious pool parties during the heat of the day – we can’t say enough good things about this gathering and the team that put it on. Big ups to the Zanzibar crew for pulling this off so flawlessly, and to my own Get Found family for representing the love. Side one of What the Mixxtape?! features some of the artists I saw and danced my ass off to, with a focus on the glitch-hop, dubstep, acid crunk, whomp and other soundz from the heavier end of the Bass Chakra spectrum, including Bonobo, Beats Antique, GRiZ, Gladkill, Ana Sia, MartyParty, Sugarpill, EPROM and Paper Diamond. Next week I’ll put out Side 2 with sounds trending house, ambient, experimental and sacred bass.

Purple Reign V : Prince Tribute Mix | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

The fifth and final (?) episode in the ongoing “Purple Reign” series of Prince tribute mixes! You can find Purple Reign episodes 1-4 at http://podcastcafe.org/episodes/files/category-prince.html. Track list: Alphabet St * Tamborine * Electric Chair * All the Critics Love You in New York * Cream * Kiss * Flutestremental * Lovesexy * Do It All Night * Marrying Kind * On the Couch * Darling Nikki * Vicki Waiting * Freaks on this Side * Get on the Boat * Forever in My Life As in all of the other installments, DJ Fundi has combed through his vast Purple Vault in search of rare remixes, B-sides, obscure cassingle tracks and a bunch of under-appreciated songs from mostly-forgotten records. This mix brings back in to the light a number of heavy cuts from the Batman soundtrack, Musicology, New Power Soul and others. I set out to make a mix of my favorite Prince songs in 2009 -- that initiative didn’t end until this Mix #5 three years later. Its been a labor of love for sure, and a great way to rediscover all of the funky gems from Prince’s 25+ year career and share them with you!

Acoustica VI: Cloudy, with a Chance of Sunbreaks | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

I just found this lost Acoustica mix deep in the Podcast Cafe vaults and have been listening to it every time I need a mellow, strumming groove. I find it both soothing and melancholy, one of my favorite combinations, and I thought I’d share it with you. It feels especially appropriate because just today, I found out that I lost a friend -- he perished in a boat fire with his wife in the marina on Bellingham Bay last week, but I didn’t know I was connected to this tragedy until today, via the news on the radio driving to work. I was half-tuned in until I heard the newscaster say his last name. The news has me dazed and sad, and this particular mix of music has been speaking to me today. None of these songs are about Jim and Sterling in particular, but it is a downtempo set with themes of loss, loving and renewal, and so I dedicate it to both of their memories. podcastcafe.org / djfundi@podcastcafe.org

The Backfloating Hedgehog | File Type: 144511365 | Duration: Unknown
Milk It : A NIRVANA MIXTAPE | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

After reading Charles Cross’ excellent biography of Kurt Cobain, Heavier Than Heaven, I felt moved to collect my favorite Nirvana songs in to a (digital) mixtape, mostly so I could carry around 1 hour and 30 minutes of anguished guttural dark rocknroll to tap in to when the mood called for. I have such profound and deep-felt respect and awe for Cobain & Co’s gifts as musicians, poets and avatars and this recent journey through words and music has made me appreciate anew what this powerhouse trio brought to the world. I’m continually amazed that they were only together a handful of years and only produced three studio albums, and I can’t help but wonder what Kurt would have done in following years had he kept himself alive. There is a new level of artistry and sophistication that comes through on In Utero-era recordings, as if he was only starting to bloom, and his self-inflicted early exit stands as a great tragedy for rock n roll. This mix pulls together tracks from Bleach, Nevermind and In Utero (mostly demos, B-sides, alt takes, etc) as well as their live albums (Reading, Portland 1989, Seattle Paramount Halloween 1991) and With the Lights Out box set. Namaste Kurt. Here’s to hoping you’ve found your peace, and thanks for all the power chords, broken guitars and screams.
