Author Rijula Das joins us to talk about upcoming book Small Deaths | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:01:00

About SMALL DEATHS: In Calcutta’s notorious red-light district, Lalee aspires to a better life. Her unfailingly loyal client Tilu Shau has dreams too. A heady romantic and marginal novelist, Tilu is in love with the indifferent Lalee and wants to liberate her from her street life with marriage. But when a fellow sex worker and young mother is brutally murdered, the solicitous madam of the Blue Lotus invites Lalee to take the woman’s place “upstairs” as a high-end escort. The offer comes with the promise of a more lucrative life but quickly spirals into violence, corruption, and unfathomable secrets that threaten to upset the fragile stability of Lalee’s very existence. As Tilu is drawn deeper into his rescue mission, he and Lalee embark on life-altering journeys to escape a savage fate. As much a page-turner as it is poignant, SMALL DEATHS exposes the reality of society’s preyed-upon outcasts, their fierce resilience, and the dangerous impediments that stand in the way of their dignity, love, and survival

 Actress Daphne O'Neal visits Madame Perry's Salon | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:22:00

From writing, public speaking and to acting. Daphne O'Neal has done it all. From the movie Futurestates to 13 Reasons Why!  A panel appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show (1986) marked the start of her on-camera career. Her love of opera and ballet, along with her Harvard degree, suited her to the tongue-in-cheek portrayal of a "snob." By the end of the show, Daphne had won over the skeptical Chicago audience. Buoyed by the experience, she began auditioning for plays. First cast as the Postulant in The Sound of Music at Boston's Wheelock Family Theatre, Daphne went on to portray lead character Silvia in The Two Gentlemen of Verona by William Shakespeare. In 2009, Daphne was the only San Francisco actor hired for Ranch Studios' Corruption.Gov (2010), headlined by Lee Majors, Michael Madsen and Joe Estevez. She played the terrified victim of a gun-toting terrorist, a judge on film in the PBS short Futurestates,  Daphne played a TV reporter in the indie ballet feature Hope Dances, Marcus Cole's mother in Season 2 of 13 Reasons Why, a narcissistic boss in the improv comedy short 8 Daves A Week and pulled off a cameo appearance in a redhot hip-hop artist music video.  Daphne voices documentary, educational, animated and radio/TV projects and appears regularly in commercials, and sang Lead Alto in a chorus of 12 in Scott Joplin's opera Treemonisha at San Francisco's venerated Stern Grove Festival.. She has hosted live and taped PBS-TV fundraisers, among other programs.

Liverpool Rockers Joe Symes & the Loving Kind Visit Madame Perry's Salon | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:57:00

Joe Symes & The Loving Kind's self-titled debut album, released on their own record label, Truly Independent Records, is a resume of their musical versatility. A record containing songs of the rock, psychedelic, dah-dah, easy listening, country and movie soundtrack variety. One international reviewer called it an indie rock classic and two tracks appeared on the Charity Compilation Shoulder to Shoulder alongside tracks by Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene, Roger McGuinn (The Byrds), Robyn Hitchcock, Noel Gallagher, Pete Noone (Herman’s Hermits) and Wishbone Ash. This collection was organised by David Quaife, whose brother Pete was the original bass player of the British rock legends The Kinks. Creation Records’ Alan McGee even praised the album in question, even adding Hollywood stars like Matthew Modine, and Michael Keaton to the fan-base. This was followed by the energetic rock orientated double A side single I’m Gonna Find Out Someday/Things Get Better: two tracks that shows their current heavy pop incarnation, and gave the listener a glimpse of the direction the second album would take them. The single was not only played during half time at Liverpool Football Club’s ground on several occasions, but was a three-week feature on BBC Introducing. Not too bad for the band’s second official release, spurring into more recordings and shows.
