Karen Landolt is a professor, leadership consultant and career coach from Austin, Texas. Karen is an advocate for creating an entrepreneurial mindset in academia. She currently teaches Business Law, Behavioral Ethics and Entrepreneurship at the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin. She came across CliftonStrengths when was looking for an assessment to help her newly formed MBA career management team come together. It provided a common language to understand what each person could bring to the team. Soon after, when she began teaching in the business school, she discovered Gallup’s EP10 assessment. Believing in team-based and experiential learning, she knew using EP10 would help the class form teams for their service learning projects that would produce better results. She saw how well CliftonStrengths worked for her previous team, so she realized her students also needed to understand each other’s business talents in order to work best together. Karen has seen a “fever for entrepreneurship” in higher education, and her students (business or non-business students) take what they learn about themselves from the EP10 and apply it to lots of diverse disciplines. She now has EP10 routed into the curriculum of her business classes. The assessment helps her students understand what qualities they have that will help them build a business and how to find and build successful business partnerships that complement their entrepreneurial talents. Gallup's Called to Coach is a live Webcast that targets current and prospective coaches to interact with Gallup experts and independent strengths coaches who have found success in strengths-based development. On a recent Called to Coach, we spoke with Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach, specializing in EP10, Mona Anita K. Olsen, PhD. Mona is a professor and academic director at the School of Hotel Administration (SHA) at Cornell University. With enthusiastic support of the SHA's Board of Directors, the school now gives all students the opportunity to take the EP10 assessment and participate in a coaching session, a "Discovery Session," based upon their results. EP10 is now being introduced to all SHA freshmen during their new student orientation. Further, Mona hosts a monthly, informal EP10 "facilitation session" for anyone -- whether they are Cornell students or not -- who has taken the EP10. Mona said that these sessions, "...offer an opportunity to network with others and to help students determine a path forward" in their entrepreneurial journey. Mona also explained that Gallup consultants would conduct a two day course at Cornell this November to train EP10 enthusiasts on how to conduct Discovery Sessions and coaching conversations. As the EP10 assessment will be available this fall for all Cornell students free of charge, this course will allow Cornell to scale its EP10 coaching to match its expected high number of students taking the EP10 assessment. As Todd explain, the ultimate power of the EP10 doesn't happen in taking the assessment itself, but having a conversation about one's EP10 talents afterward. The conversation is the starting point for practically applying EP10 to a student's life, goals and pursuits. To learn more about EP10 and strengths, please listen to the audiot above.
