Knowing Animals

In this episode of Knowing Animals I am joined by Pattrice Jones from VINE Sanctuary. Pattrice is writer, educator and activists. She co-founded VINE Sanctuary in the US and will be well known to many listeners. 

This week on Knowing Animals I am joined by Nekeisha Alayna Alexis. Nekeisha is an independent scholar. We discuss her upcoming book chapter ‘Beyond Compare: Intersectionality and Interspecieism for Co-Liberation with Other Animals’ which will appear in the Routledge Handbook of Animal Ethics. That Handbook will be available in 2019 and is edited by Bob Fischer.

In this episode of Knowing Animals I am joined once again by Professor Lori Gruen. Lori is William Griffin Professor of Philosophy at Wesleyan in the USA. We discuss her new book ‘Critical Terms for Animal Studies’ which was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2018.

This week we are joined by Darren Chang. Darren has a Masters in political philosophy from Queen’s University. In this episode we discuss Darren’s upcoming book chapter titled ‘Examining Contemporary Indigenous Struggles and Animal Advocacy through the Commercial Seal Hunt’. It will appear in the book Decolonizing Critical Animal Studies, which is edited by Chloe Taylor and Kelly Struthers Montford, and which will be published by Brill Press in 2019.

This week on Knowing Animals we are joined by Nichola Kriek. Nichola is the Head of Education at SAFE New Zealand. SAFE is one of New Zealand’s leading animal protection organisations. Nichola tells us about her work for animals.   

This week I am joined by Professor Clive Phillips. Clive is Chair of Animal Welfare and Director of the Centre for Animal Welfare and Ethics, in the School of Veterinary Science at the University of Queensland. We discuss Clive’s book ‘The Animal Trade’ which was published in 2015 by CABI International.

This week we are joined by Michael Dello-Iacovo. Michael is a PhD student and also the Animal Justice Party (AJP) for Heffron in the upcoming NSW state election. We talk about the AJP and Michael’s political work for animals.   

In this episode of Knowing Animals I am joined by PeterAdkins. Peter is an Assistant Lecturer and Ph.D. Candidate in the School of English at the University of Kent in the UK. We discuss his article ‘The Eyes of That Cow: Eating Animals and Theorizing Vegetarianism in James Joyce’s Ulysses’, which appeared in the journal Humanities in 2017.  

This week on Knowing Animals we are joined by Dr Kristof Dhont. Kristof is Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Kent. We discuss his journal article ‘Common Ideological Roots of Speciesism and Generalized Ethnic Prejudice: The Social Dominance Human–Animal Relations Model (SD-HARM)’ which appeared in the European Journal of Personality. We should give a quick shout out to his co-authors Gordon Hodson and Ana C. Leite.

We discuss her book chapter ‘Horses at Waterloo, 1815’ which will appear in the forthcoming book Equine Cultures: Horses, Human Society and the Discourse of Modernity, 1700-present, which is edited by Kristen Guest and Monica Mattfeld and which will be published by University of Chicago Press.

We his journal article ‘Lost trophies: Hunting animals and the imperial souvenir in Walton Ford’s Pancha Tantra’ which appeared in the Journal of Commonwealth Literature in 2016.

We discuss her paper ‘Endling Taxidermy: Lonesome George, Global Genomics, and the Iconographies of Extinction’ which will soon appear in the journal Configurations: A Journal of Literature, Science, and Technology.

He is also part of the Biosec team. We discuss his paper ‘Anti-poaching’s politics of (in)visibility:Representing nature and conservation amidst a poaching crisis’ which appeared in the journal Geoforum in 2018.
