Pastor With No Answers Podcast

Summary: Joey Svendsen, formerly of BadChristian Podcast, is a pastor who found freedom in gladly embracing mystery and relinquishing his long list of theological “certainties.” Growing up a fundamentalist, evangelical Christian, he now explores faith through progressive lenses while continuing connection with evangelicals, many who are part of the church he pastors at. Join Joey, his regular commentators and many special guests (progressives, traditionalists and evangelicals alike) as they discuss God and the Bible. Hear about Joey's experiences with mental illness. Reflect with us on stories of tragedy.  189 - Universalism Further Explored (Part 2 w/ Chris Date) | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:54:31

:  Joey and Chris continue a conversation about Universalism (check out episode 187 with Dan Koch).  According to Chris, it’s very unlikely that Jesus saves everyone and this conclusion is by and large, tied to the teachings of Jesus. We discuss how in Paul’s letters, he leaves the “Universalism door” a bit more open than Jesus.  We also wade through some other questions like “does God love his enemies,” “why Jesus asked forgiveness for those who crucified Him,” and if God is perfect, why is it a “win” for masses of people to forever be separated from the love of God.

 188 - Indie Rock Talk II | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:40:01

Back again to discuss one of our favorite things.  MUSIC!  In this edition there's some secret, behind the scenes info on the pre-signed (at the time) Emery LP, "Weak's End." We talk Dinosaur Jr. vs. Sebadoh, we have a discussion on bands “selling out” and the pain experienced back in the day when jocks discovered your favorite “used to be” underground band (like…..remember when “blue album” by Weezer was undiscovered?). We also talk about some of the newer bands we’re listening to and reflect on the tendency of gravitating towards the particular music vibe that got you hooked in the first place.

Universalism Further Explored (PART 1 w/ Dan Koch) | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 01:05:00

Joey and Dan reflect on a recent conversation about universalism between Joey and his fellow co-host of BadChristian Podcast, Toby Morrell.  Is logic involved in discussing the after-life?  If we look hard enough and pray more diligently, does scripture present one clear message about how everything works after we die?  Is this for us to know, for certain?  And if one believes in universalism, what’s the point of even maintaining a Christian faith?   Dan, just like all of us doesn’t have the answers but in his current reflection and studies of spirituality, coupled with what he finds to be personal experience with the divine, he feels generally compelled to take his cues from Jesus’ teachings.  So, does Jesus bring clarity to this discussion?  Despite not being sure one way or the other, in regards to the plausibility of universalism, the “Jesus cues” have led Dan to believe that universalism may not be too crazy of a thought after-all.    You Have Permission Podcast: https://www.dankochwords.com Support Joey Svendsen, SvenZone Podcast: https://www.patreon.com/pwnapod

 186 - God Can Heal but Usually Doesn’t | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:01:08

Jack Hoey and Joey discuss their church and the many apparent miracles many have experienced there, through physical healing.  We dissect what we would call common misconceptions of healing verses, including Jesus saying “We will do greater things than Him.”  We also give our honest assessment of what’s been happening. Additionally, we marvel at the wonderful community we are a part of.   There’s not too many organizations—-especially churches—-that operate with such open-handedness.  This conversation is open and honest; and unfortunately, most churches are too territorial for this type of open dialogue. This makes zero sense, given we are a collection of finite people seeking the infinite.

185 - Adolescence is a New Concept and Parents Are Scrambling | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:00:15

Dr. Kenneth Wilgus, practicing psychologist for families with teens, joins Joey and his wife, Pricilla, to talk about his book “Feeding the Mouth that Bites You.”  This book, in our opinion, is a must read for parents who currently have teens in their houses or those whose kids are getting close to that age.  Your teens’ need for more autonomy, why presenting a clear plan for freedoms and accountability is so important, “normal lying,” social media, kids fearing parents, and parents’ role as guides and trainers as opposed to controllers are many of the subjects talked about here.

 184 - God’s Love Gives Way to Our Safety (w/ Ben Moore) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:25:44

Joey and Ben discuss their changing faith and theorize a bit on how deconstructing is inevitable once a person is honest about his or her questioning.  Ben Moore has been listening to BadChristian for 5 years and is one step away from being a major league baseball player for the L.A. Dodgers.  We discuss what a baseball career looks like in general and in Ben’s current successful “baseball season of life.” More info on http://www.theBCclub.com To support SvenZone Podcast, go to https://www.patreon.com/pwnapod

 183 - Parenting Good Enough (-101) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:16:11

Joey shares some personal parenting mistakes, proposes some questions about parenting, and discusses some helpful findings he's had as a parent.  In this first installment, he shares a story that poses the following question: is there such thing as kids having “healthy fear” of their parents?   Also, there’s a cool financial app for kids called Greenlight and a must-read book called “Feeding the Mouth that Bites You.” This books reminds readers that "teen years" is a relatively new concept and in the 1930s, 15 year olds were managing their own families, households, and farms.  As much as we'd like them to be still be kids, they are learning, young adults now. Thus, we may want to rethink how to parent these aliens in our house. I feel confident this book is a good start.   E-mail mailto:JoeysvendsenBC@gmail.com to chime in to the conversation.  181 - Indie Rock Talk | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:07:09

On this episode Joey, Jared and Logan discuss the history of Indie Rock. It's a very subjective discourse about the progression of indie/punk/etc, how the bands related to and influenced one another, as well as who the most influential bands were. It was a lot of fun talking about where grunge came from and how amazing it was the that "Nevermind" (Nirvana) "ended the hair-band metal" era. intro song by “The Long Valley.”

 180 - More About These Digital Hang-Outs | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:06:21

A handful of you who have signed up for the first wave of digital gatherings and will soon be joining 5 other folks to discuss changing beliefs and discover how each person found themselves still holding on to God.  In this episode, Joey discusses the sucker punch of finding out there was no magic formula on how the Canon of Scripture came together and how 7 years later, he finds it a worthy endeavor to facilitate discussions that will give people permission to follow promptings, ask questions, push back and rest in God.  Hopefully, through these gatherings many will be able to reconstruct some building-block essentials of a fresh approach to spirituality that entails a deeper level of trust, wider expectations of the infinite and confidence that a loving God is watching with delight as we doubt, question, draw closer, repel, wonder.  He smiles a smile that says everything will be okay.   E-mail mailto:JoeySvendsenBC@gmail.com for a digital seat for the first wave of discussions or to get on a Fall waiting list.   Also e-mail me for more information on the mental illness support and accountability group.
