Pastor With No Answers Podcast

Summary: Joey Svendsen, formerly of BadChristian Podcast, is a pastor who found freedom in gladly embracing mystery and relinquishing his long list of theological “certainties.” Growing up a fundamentalist, evangelical Christian, he now explores faith through progressive lenses while continuing connection with evangelicals, many who are part of the church he pastors at. Join Joey, his regular commentators and many special guests (progressives, traditionalists and evangelicals alike) as they discuss God and the Bible. Hear about Joey's experiences with mental illness. Reflect with us on stories of tragedy.  219 - White Person, Please Listen to This | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:29:19

A few episodes ago, there were two white guys on this show (one of them was yours truly) and some how we ended up talking about whether or not there was equal opportunity for black people and whether racism still posed problems here in the US of A. It sparked a lot of conversation so I invited my friend Robbie Madison, who is black, to give his perspective of what was discussed. Additional topics are addressed, including the honoring of white racist historical figures, how black people feel around cops, and why being “colorblind” actually isn’t really a virtue. For context, at top of this show, we play the clips of previous episode being discussed.  216 - 12 Apostles, None Female? Calling God Mom? Lice the Result of the Fall? And more. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:16:29

Another segment of “Ask Jack,” we talk whether God, along with "Our Father," can also be referred to as "Our Mother." We ponder whether poop and lice were part of the original plan for creation and we ask why Jesus couldn't have just picked one woman to be part of the 12. Things kick off with a phone heckler Joey received a message from back in the summer.  215 - 80s TV Star, John Schneider, of The Dukes of Hazard | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:19:34

A little reprieve from all the blasted spiritual talk. (Interview with John starts at 28:30 mark) Former roommate of Johnny Cash and a friend of Tyler Perry, John Schneider, who played Bo Duke in the hit TV show, “Dukes of Hazard,” has had one impressive journey. We talk about his career, how he’s convicted to live his life, and we reflect on racism and the sensitivity of our current culture. John has a line of CBD oil, “CBoD oil,” he’s a #1 hit country musician and has starred in the TV show, “Pleasantville,” and currently stars in Tyler Perry’s, “The Haves and Have Nots.” Perhaps most importantly, he’s co-founded the highly impactful non-profit called The Children’s Miracle Network (raised more than 5 billion dollars for the care of sick children). This guy just doesn’t quit. John reflects on his illustrious career in his new book, “My Life, My Way.” I thoroughly enjoyed this interview and loved hearing some behind the scenes of my favorite show as a kid, “The Dukes of Hazard.” John Schneider: https://johnschneiderstudios.com/ CBoD oil: https://johnschneidercbod.com/ Children’s Miracle Network: https://childrensmiraclenetworkhospitals.org/ John’s book: https://johnschneiderstudiostore.myshopify.com/products/my-life-my-way-book Agape Flashcards: https://agapeflashcards.com/ (get them on Amazon as well!)  214 - Author Scott A. Shay Explores Most Common Atheist Critiques of the Bible. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:38:25

In his book, “In Good Faith: Questioning Religion and Atheism,” Shay incorporates Jewish, Christian and Muslim voices for a fresh, modern re-evaluation of religion and of atheism.   Why does God always seem so pissed? Why wouldn’t God’s existence be made more obvious to everyone so all would believe?  Is Genesis allegorical? Old Testament human trafficking? Are scientists in denial if they deny the existence of a god?  What kind of messiah are Jewish people looking for? (Interview starts at 16:55 mark) Joey, Natalie and John also talk about profoundly violent and grotesque movies (i.e. Midsommar) and whether there is merit in “the disturbing.” Support this podcast:  patreon.com/pwnapod Follow this podcast:  FB, T and I: @PWNApod Join the discussion:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/PWNAtalk Follow Joey on FB, T and I:  @joeysvendsen E-mail PWNAcontact@gmail.com for correspondence

 213 - Church Recovery Group | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:36:20

Introducing some friends of mine who you’ll be hearing more from in “Pastor With No Answers Land.” The three of us met in a house church, we discuss here how that church family functioned as a church recovery group for people addicted to "church anger." We also discuss postpartum depression, an embarrassing podcast blunder of mine, and how John, as a recovered addict, would love to roll a blunt and watch Netflix with his wife once in a blue moon; just not worth the risk for him.  212 - John Mark Mcmillan and Joey Svendsen De and Reconstruction of Faith | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 01:00:41

Joey and John Mark have become friends over the years, also sharing similar paths in personal faith changes and how they view their Christianity. Both have learned how to rest more in their questions, ween off the need of having certainties, and prioritize love over everything. Both also still consider themselves followers of Jesus, enjoy being a part of a church and also understand why many have left. They talk a bit about their faith here. Also, enjoy a sneak preview of the new forthcoming John Mark Mcmillan album, “Peopled With Dreams.” JMM: https://www.johnmarkmcmillan.com/, Twitter: @JohnMarkMc Support this podcast:  patreon.com/pwnapod Follow this podcast:  FB, T and I: @PWNApod Join the discussion:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/PWNAtalk Follow Joey on FB, T and I:  @joeysvendsen E-mail PWNAcontact@gmail.com for correspondence

Jarrid Wilson took his life last year in September.  A few years back, he hosted this show while my wife and I took the place of “guests," sharing the effects my depression has had on our marriage while Jarrid shares his story of battling depression as well. Lots of laughs, lots of heartfelt introspection, while openly discussing and de-stigmatizing this common sickness that many endure.  209 - Some Christians Don’t Believe God Knows the Future? (w/ Thomas Oord and Jack Hoey) | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 01:16:14

Thomas Oord  (ThomasJayOord.com) wrote a book entitled “God Can’t.”  It’s an articulate  presentation of Open Theism, a belief that supposes for freewill to exist, the future is unknowable, even to God.  So if God doesn’t know the future, this would mean limitations in his power which goes against what most believe about God.  At the same time, this posture is more suitable to make sense of all the pain in this world.   It goes like this: It’s not that God allows evil, but rather because He gave us freewill, He doesn’t know the evil we’ll do and thus can’t stop it.  This is an intriguing discussion in which Jack Hoey and I try to make sense of this theology as well as poke holes in it.  Although I do not hold this view, it’s certainly not as far-fetched as it may appear at first glance.   Thomas Oord:  www.thomasjayoord.com Support this podcast:  patreon.com/pwnapod Follow this podcast:  FB, T and I: @PWNApod Join the discussion:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/PWNAtalk Follow Joey on FB, T and I:  @joeysvendsen E-mail PWNAcontact@gmail.com for correspondence

208 - A Practical Discussion on Grieving During the Holidays & the future of PWNA Podcast | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 01:15:58

“It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” “Deck the Halls,” and “Holly Jolly Christmas” for many, but for others, it’s nothing but a “Blue. blue, blue blue Christmas.”  Many stories of grief have been shared on this podcast (Episodes 21,22,35,39,122,150) so I wanted to process the in’s and out’s of grief with a professional, especially pertaining to the holidays.  I sat down with a local therapist here in Charleston SC  for us to glean more understanding and guidance about interacting with those who are grieving.  What are the best ways to be supportive?  Are there times when it’s appropriate to push a bit?  What should one say (or not say)? There’s also some helpful information directed towards those listening who are currently grieving during the holidays.  Merry Christmas and we remember those who do not find it merry at all.   Support this podcast:  patreon.com/pwnapod Follow this podcast:  FB, T and I: @PWNApod Join the discussion:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/PWNAtalk Follow Joey on FB, T and I:  @joeysvendsen E-mail PWNAcontact@gmail.com for correspondence Special ongoing thanks for much of the music on this show: http://dankoch.net/

 207 - The Church Doesn’t Like Questions About Sexuality | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:53:26

The church should be notorious for welcoming questions, having conversations without the short fuses and pretense, and allowing for environments where people are comfortable with being brutally honest.  Because supposedly, we’ve been rescued by love and “perfect love casts out fear,” right?  So what do we have to be afraid about? Today’s guest had questions about sexuality and him merely having these questions was not welcomed by his church.  So Jonathan Foster wrote a book about his experience entitled “Questions About Sexuality that Got Me Uninvited from My Denomination.”   The church, the gay community, more understanding, possible unity.  At the very least, can we have a conversation? keep up with J.  206 - Not So Fast, Wives Submit to Your Husbands, REALLY | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:34:48

Today’s guest says “not so fast” in regards to last episodes liberal handling of wife to husband submission.  These verses, according to him, are clear and consistent enough to grapple with.  205 - Wives, Submit to Your Husbands | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 01:12:31

It almost feels archaic to follow these instructions but many couples raised on fundamentalism perceived these passages as instructions for a healthy marriage and many still do.  Our two guests, Trisha Wilkerson and Ellen Mauro, join SvenZone to discuss insight on how they arrived at a different place. Once gaining a way more robust, rich outlook on marriage, neither adhered any longer to the simplicity of submission and that has bid them well in their relationship with their husbands.
