Tonight on GeekNights, we talk about live streaming video, while streaming said video live (and discovering after-the-fact that the video ended up stuttery-as-fuck: sorry about that!). In the news, Caller ID by Google and a reputation data for phone numbers are angering a certain kind of person, Scott's english muffin problem proves unsolvable, and Scott reviews the iPad Mini Retina.
Tonight on GeekNights, we consider yard games like Bocce, Cornhole, Horseshoes, and Badminton. These games share certain characteristics: they must be reasonably deep orthogames, have shallow learning curves, and provide contextual social opportunities yet not require them. Rym reviews Ingress (it's a Candy Box), and Scott takes a guess that Pandemic: The Cure doesn't fall too far from the tree. We posit on why anyone even bothers to play Pandemic. Rym has Google Glass.
Tonight on GeekNights, we discuss the minor anime renaissance that seems to have been sparked by Attack on Titan, and is now smoldering through Kill La Kill and hopefully Space Dandy. Be sure to check out the Fantagraphics 2014 Spring Season and Bee and Puppycat kickstarters. Wolf Children is playing again in several theaters, and a new Initial D movie is coming (with non-SuperEurobeat music possibly).
Tonight on the eighth anniversary of the first episode of GeekNights, we discuss politics (just as we did back in 2005)! Specifically, real politics that matter directly to us and our lives and over which we can have a meaningful effect. We then move on to address Stasiland in the GeekNights Book Club!
Tonight on GeekNights, we tell you a little about Burning Con 2013: The Pentaclagon! We also have some photos from the con, including the Burning Photobooth! In the news, don't buy Castellan, and don't buy Dungeon Roll. Also, be sure to check out the newly updated GeekNights Forum! It's an Ivory Tower that proves many of our points. Also check out our continuing series: GeekNights Presents Utena! It just updated!
Tonight on GeekNights, in celebration of Halloween, we review the... odd... Take the X Train that came out of Rintaro's 1987 brain. In the news, Ayumi Hamasaki sings for Buddha 2, and Anime News Nina is ending its run. Stay tuned for BIG CHANGES to the GeekNights/Front Row Crew Forum, and PAX is sold out.
Tonight on GeekNights, we consider the best game to play while pooping: Neuroshima Hex! In the news, PS4 owners lose backward compatibility with headsets, and Yoshi's Cookie is being removed from the virtual console.
Tonight on GeekNights, we bring some spoiler-filled final thoughts on season one of Attack on Titan. If you haven't seen it yet, just watch it: it's this season's Fullmetal Alchemist. We also preview Kill La Kill, which might be Studio Trigger's Evangelion. It hearkens to shows like Apocalypse Zero and Otokojuku, with hints of Utena and Trigun-looking big guys. Oh, Teen Titans Go is sort of worth watching too!
Tonight on GeekNights, Rym recounts server room cooling adventures. HVAC isn't really taught in most university IT programs, but it's often one of the first things you'll end up dealing with in the real world. Before that, we consider Lavabit's issues with the FBI and Adobe's CC security breach.
Tonight on GeekNights, we discuss the ongoing US government shutdown, quote some Abraham Lincoln, and recall airline food. Rym reviews the movies he watched recently while flying (Phone Booth, The Last Castle, and No Country for Old Men). For what it's worth, Last Castle is basically a mishmash of Cool Hand Luke, Dead Poets Society, and The Shawshank Redemption.
Tonight on GeekNights, back from Istanbul and PAX (for real this time), we consider the Steam Box, PAC-MAN CE DX+ on Steam, Mighty Number 9, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. We're also resuming production of GeekNights Presents: Utena, and will soon be streaming many more... things.
Tonight on GeekNights, we talk about Darude's Sandstorm (real, not fake) and Saltybet. Heroquest (was a bad game) and is being re-made. River City Ransom, similarly, is also being remade. Diablo III drops is shit-tacular real money auction house. Scott is streaming things. (Rym will be soon). Video from PAX (Bad Games). All this and more... on GeekNights!
Tonight on GeekNights, despite having not seen it in over a decade, we review Disney's Aladdin. In the news, Miyazaki is (actually) retiring, and every one of you should read Trillium. We also discuss the rumors that Anno could get to try his hand at Nausicaä (and how that would be HUGE for the anime industry), as well as how Attack on titan appears to be causing a resurgence in anime watching among previously "lapsed" anime fans. Protip: If you need something to watch while you wait for season two of Attack on Titan, and need that cliffhanger fix, try (in this order) Madoka Magica, Vision of Escaflowne, Giant Robo.
Tonight on GeekNights, back from PAX and getting rolling again, we lethargically talk about motherboards, which are far less interesting than they used to be (at least, if you're building a PC). In the news, the tech sector is still pretty sexist, Bitcoin block chains can be subjected to interesting analysis, and Photoshop is now only $10/month.
Tonight on GeekNights, we review the recently popular Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin - 進撃の巨人). It's good, but in the same way that Fullmetal Alchemist or Fushigi Yugi was good: solid, but not an anime to re-watch for all time. Before that, Rym warns you against seeing the fucking awful Potted Potter, and Scott demands that you read Jeff Lemire's Trillium.
