Hip-GRAMMY-nominated Nappy Roots dropped their latest song, “Blind Faith,” that happens to speak directly to the current turmoil that America is facing. This is the first song from the group’s forthcoming album, “40RTY,” which is set to be released on Sept. 18. In addition to sharing new music monthly, Nappy Roots will also debut beer collaborations with a variety of breweries across the country each month this summer. “Blind Faith” is a soulful southern perspective about perseverance during these trying and uncertain times. The song addresses that even though people may be doing “everything right” based on their ‘blind faith,’ nothing is going to improve without a major change. Even though the song was written last year, it seems especially relevant in the current climate. Produced by 808 Blake, the song also features the vocals from newcomer Lando Ameen, as well as original group members Ron Clutch, Skinny Deville, Fish Scales and B. Stille. “We were amazed at the timing of the country’s current events and the release of our song, but we think that speaks to the importance and timelessness of the movement and our message,” said Fish Scales, one of the founding members of Nappy Roots. “We are excited to share our two passions all summer long: new music and new craft beer.” The band began experimenting several years ago with their home brewery, Atlantucky, which fermented their passion for microbrewing. The group has now mass-produced numerous beers across the country. This summer’s craft brew collaborations include: Good Day IPA - released by Full Circle Brewing (CA) in June On My Way to GA - released by Cherry Street (GA) in July Watermelon Chiken & Gritz - released by Against the Grain Brewery (KY) in August Nappy Goat - released by Scofflaw Brewing Co. I have always been a food enthusiast- I began experimenting in the kitchen starting at age 3, won awards for my food photos in high school and majored in Dietetics in college. I attended the University of Georgia for my bachelor’s degree (Go Dawgs!), then took root in Atlanta after graduation. I worked for Atlanta Eats (Atlanta’s local food TV show) directly after college and maintained roles in sales, marketing and social media. When I took charge of the brand's Instagram account, there were ~5,000 followers and I grew the channel to be more than 40,000. During this time, I began working on camera and appearing with restaurants on “Atlanta Plugged In” on CBS46 each week. I hosted the Athens, GA episode of “Dish Worth the Drive” and was featured in several “Public Affairs on Peach” specials. Following Atlanta Eats, I took on a new role as Marketing and Media Manager for Taste of Atlanta, Atlanta’s largest and longest-running food festival. I managed all marketing partnerships, planned all social media and blog content for all of the festival’s events, and became extremely detail-oriented. One of my main responsibilities for this brand was also increasing Instagram engagement. I began working on the account when it had ~5,800 followers and grew it to ~49,000 followers. While at Taste of Atlanta, I co-hosted the segment, “Talk Food to Me with Skye Estroff” on Star 94.1’s morning show and got my RYT 200 yoga teaching certification. What events led to the start of Love Beyond Walls, what is their mission and how are they helping in the fight against Covid19 beyond the streets of Atlanta? On Auburn Ave, Terence and Cecilia encountered a homeless woman. “Do you know anyone who needs clothes or shoes?” Cecilia asked. The lady immediately responded, “Of course, I need some right now!” When this warm-hearted lady rummaged through the two bags, she came across a pair of black shoes, and started jumping up and down with excitement. “I just prayed for a pair of shoes last night, and God answered.” Terence and Cecilia looked at each other, and in that moment—the concept of “Love Beyond Walls” was born. On the ride home, they discussed ways to mobilize others to join them in moving past the walls that divide people, and to take love to people in creative ways. That day, they both became compassionate about work in the trenches, and the desire to love people where they were. In 2013, Terence formalized the concept of Love Beyond Walls as more than just an idea by incorporating as a nonprofit and living as homeless person in the heart of the City of Atlanta. With the permission of his family, he lived on the streets to understand the sufferings of those faced with homelessness and poverty. He was put out of shelters, slept under bridges, ate handouts, begged for money, got put out of restaurants, stayed up countless days, and experienced every aspect of homelessness first-hand. He wanted to wear the shoes of the people the organization serves. The organization has focused on raising awareness of the realities and needs of those experiencing lack and vulnerability, and using that vehicle as a way of mobilizing people to take part in those stories. We continually raise awareness and mobilize an army of people who dare to get involved in breaking down barriers and dreaming up new solutions. Since starting, Love Beyond Walls has mobilized thousands of people to serve those that are vulnerable and forgotten. Love Beyond Walls is a 501(c)(3) organization recognized by the federal government. Dionna Dorsey, a Washington, D.C.-based graphic designer and brand development strategist, saw the income from her full-time design business begin to dry up when COVID-19 hit as clients put projects on hold. So she began investing more time in her side hustle – an online store called District of Clothing that she launched in 2014 with t-shirts and other items featuring empowering messages like ‘Dreamer Doer’ – to put extra money in her pocket. The effort paid off big-time, thanks in part to the fact that District of Clothing orders are printed and fulfilled by print-on-demand company Printful with no manufacturing, warehousing or logistics overhead on Dorsey’s part. She received 170 orders averaging two to three items apiece in April – up from just 29 in March and 49 a year earlier – helping close the gap between her active and passive income in the face of the COVID-related business slowdown. She did it by strategically increasing Facebook and Instagram posts and social media ad buys; making adjustments to her website to enable faster loading; introducing a Work From Home sale (“people need something to wear to Zoom meetings,” she notes); and introducing a new ‘Common Purpose’ collection – complete with neck gaiters that can double as face masks – with a portion of revenues earmarked for COVID-19 relief. That collection was originally intended to debut in September to encourage voting, but Dorsey moved it up because the theme is equally suited to the need for a united front against the coronavirus. What is Green Goo, what hurdles did that face in the beginning and how are they helping people live better quality lives today. I got all the tea from one of the Co-founders Jodi. This woman-owned business is turning quite a few heads on the market. I personally love their products and gained so much inspiration from their story. Web: www.greengoo.com Follow: @greengoohelps About the brand: It was 2008 when we bought the original company from Nan, an herbalist and icon in California. My sister, Jen, was growing and wildcrafting calendula, chamomile, and a whole host of other herbs. While she was studying to become a certified herbalist and permaculturist, she would dry these herbs on an old screen door then use the warmth of the sun to infuse them in oils over the course of a full moon cycle. These infusions were used to create healing salves which were sold at local farmers’ markets. At the time, Jen was also working as a midwife. She would often work throughout the day making salves in her kitchen, followed by night sessions assisting with childbirths. In 2009, Jen and Chris, who would later become her husband, moved to Idaho where they continued to make salves while working other jobs. Our mom, Kathy, and I would travel from Texas, where we lived and worked, to Boise, in order to help Jen with production, and we would also stay to sell salves at the various markets and festivals. Back then we were called Sierra Sage Herbs. And so it went on like this for a while, our family buzzing around the homestead, working around the clock, plant oils covering almost every surface and the scent of flowers wafting through every room. As sales grew, we gathered a small, but determined group of people to help us. We rented a small warehouse and moved some of the production out of Jen's kitchen. At this point, we were still mostly making salves for farmers’ markets, festivals, family, and friends. The response to our products was incredible -- our salves were a hit! -- and we realized that we needed a website to help customers find our goods in between various markets and festivals. Luckily, our Mom, a self-taught graphic designer and website developer, came to the rescue. Then, in February 2012, while on vacation with the entire family in Hawaii, we gathered together for an “official” meeting that would change the course of our business. We had just received a request to put our products on the shelves at NGVC, which was our FIRST order from a natural food chain store. They were asking for price sheets and UPCs, which of course we promised, but did not have at the time. It was in this moment that we decided to shift our company from kitchen production and farmers’ markets to something bigger. Our business continued to grow and in 2015, not only were our products in the gift bags at the Oscars, but we also participated in our first Outdoor Retailer show, where we received a big break working with Duluth Trading Company. At that point, we knew it was time to go all in. We did a brand refresh and changed the name of our product line from Sierra Sage to Green Goo. We made the collective decision to leave behind our former jobs and move our families to Colorado to be together in one place. And that’s where we are now, in a little town called Lyons in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. We outgrew our first workspace pretty quickly, and we now have two office spaces, a warehouse, and a farm, where we live and develop our salves and other body care products. We’ve found our way into a pretty amazing group of retail stores, including Walmart, CVS, Target, Safeway, Tractor Supply Co., Meijer, and HEB, among many others. We now have around thirty employees, a group that includes family, friends from college, Lyons natives, and people we’ll be friends with for the rest of our lives.
