Heina Dadabhoy joined us for this weeks discussion on Islam, focusing on Apostasy and the Western Difference in an now globalized Islam. While we did not have time to cover everything we wanted to, it was a excellent discussion nonetheless. We will be doing a follow up show with Heina later to discuss Jihad. Find Heina here on Freethought Blogs: http://freethoughtblogs.com/heinous/
This week, Spencer and Forrest discuss moral ontology and the nature of values and how they are grounded. They cover Euthyphro's dilemma, and unpack the problems and implications that both Christians and secularists have when grounding their moral philosophy. They include the "why" question: Why is 'God's nature' good? Or why is 'well-being' good? And how can each worldview derive an 'ought' statement from what 'is' the case? This was a fun show, and hopefully it will get you thinking and encourage you to reflect on why you behave in the ways that you do.
This week we discussed the mid-term elections and common creationist arguments. This was a fun show with another visit from Joshua Feuerstein via YouTube.
Christianity, Judaism and Islam all share the creation story of Adam and Eve and the doctrine of original sin as central to their theology. Conservative Evangelicals in America especially harp on this doctrine of ‘the Fall of man’ as a way to shoehorn in the rest of their dogmas. Pervasive in the story of Adam and Eve is a pessimistic and distrustful attitude towards humanity. Spencer, Forrest and Andre discuss why this myth is harmful, and the positive steps our species has taken towards less violence and more compassion and understanding throughout history.
What is Halloween about? Truthfully, we had no idea, so we did an unprepared show about it. As it turns out, we had a great discussion and learned a thing or two in the process. Checkout our Halloween episode!
Forrest and Spencer discuss the all to commonly employed "Argument from Incredulity".
Lori Fazzino joined us for a discussion on the Christian Culture Industry. We covered the coopting of pop culture by churches, prosperity gospel, and the deeply disturbing hell houses. We also managed to fail to keep FCC broadcast standards (thanks Andre and Forrest), but we'll try again next week. This was an excellent show topic that went over time. Forrest, Spencer, and Andre (the host of Unbelievers Radio, who already hosts a podcast and won't go away), discuss the line between personal attacks and challenging religious ideas. When is it ok to offend? What constitutes a personal attack? How can we show the difference between discussing ideas and insulting someone personally? We hope you find this podcast useful in future chats with religious friends. The Happy Atheist, by PZ Myers Hardcopy or eBook Audiobook (AtheistAudiobooks.com)
Dr. Darrel Ray was in town for an event with the Secular Student Alliance at Arizona State University and decided to stop by the studio for a last minute podcast.
