Only a handful of automobile brands expect to shell out the millions of dollars it’ll take for a few seconds of ad time during Sunday’s Super Bowl XLIX including Toyota, which has already kicked off its Super Bowl ad campaign online — featuring good dads of the NFL like retired quarterback Kurt Warner. (Warner) “Ya know being a dad doesn’t have anything to do with blood – it’ s not biological – it’s about a choice that you make to love your children.” Mercedez says its bought some Super Bowl air time along with Kia, BMW and Lexus, which were told plans a no frills spot to keep the focus on its new NX. Nissan returns to the Super Bowl for the first time in almost two decades. Though Audi and Volkswagen are out, as well as Ford and Lincoln. And GM’s skipping the game, in part because of the costs. Though Chevy, fresh off the launch of its new Volt, will reportedly have a presence during Super Bowl XLIX — with the game’s MVP being awarded a new Colorado pickup. It’s back to the drawing board. ———- The brand new Ford F-150 is now rolling off the line in Detroit and headed to a dealer near you — almost 700-pounds lighter than its predecessor; built with military grade aluminum for improved gas mileage and hauling capacity, and there’s the rugged and stylish new design. (Hettle) “We believe that we’ll bring a truck to the market place beyond anything that anyone has seen — in terms of styling and craftsmanship — and so, so important tough truck performance.” Ford VP Bruce Hettle saying the American auto giant is setting what he believes will be an industry-wide standard. A big bet for Ford. F-series trucks have been the best-selling vehicles in the U.S. for 37 straight years. The starting price for the F-150 –about 27 grand. Honda piles on the exploding airbag recall, Chrysler retires an icon and man in Europe retires his brand new Fiat. FOX News Radio’s Jeff Monosso reports:  It’s FOX Wheels. Honda adds several vehicles including ’03 to ’05 Accords, ’01 to ’05 Civics — to the list of vehicles being recalled in 13 states, because of faulty airbags caused apparently by high humidity. Nine other automakers in the U.S. also recalling Takata airbags. To find out if your vehicle’s involved, check with your car maker. ———- A man in Italy so tired of unreliable public transportation and of being late to work — snapped, and took a hatchet to his brand new Fiat 500 when it wouldn’t start, making him late, again; the soul reason he bought the now totaled car. Consumer Reports just named the Fiat the most unreliable car brand on the market. ———- And, after merging with Fiat — Chrysler is quietly saying goodbye to the iconic Pentastar, the symbol that’s graced Chryslers for over five decades.   The new Chevy Volt and a “sort of” leasing option for the new Tesla S. FOX News Radio’s Jeff Monosso with the latest “Fox Wheels”: When the next-generation Chevy Volt makes its market debut in January, it’ll feature an all-new electric propulsion system, says Chevy’s Andrew Farah, improving… (Farah) “The electric range – the fuel economy. And we’re going to improve the perforance.” Current combined range is about 380 miles and expect… (Farah) “An all new interior – and exterior.” But we’ll have to wait to see it. The new Volt’s styling is one of the auto worlds best-kept secrets. We know what the Ford Focus Electric looks like. And it’s gotten a $6,000 price cut for 2014-2015 models coupled with the federal tax credit. The starting price of the Focus Electric around $22,000. Sticker price for the new Tesla S around $71,000. But the company unveiling a option through U.S. bank, allowing buyers in the U.S. to return the car within three months if they’re not satisfied. A “short term lease”.   More auto recalls and some good news bad news for Ford. FOX News Radio’s Jeff Monosso reports: It’s FOX Wheels. The word of the year for 2014 is photobomb when maybe it should have been recall. There’s been a string of them, including GM’s deadly ignition switch. The company says half of the over 2 million cars recalled have yet to be fixed. And now National Highway Transportation Safety Administration asking owners of almost 8 million vehicles to act immediately over defective airbags affecting Toyota, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Chrysler, Ford and GM. The airbags – made by Japanese parts maker Takata can malfunction, sending shrapnel into the car. Four deaths and dozens of injuries attributed to the Takata airbags. The feds urge you check with your manufacturer to make sure your vehicle is safe. Ford Motor Company’s profits dropped 34% in the third quarter the company says it’s because of the cost of launching its new aluminum-sided F-150 pickup.   It’s National Teen Driver Safety Week and we’ve got the list of best cars under $12,000 for your teens, along with a cool new gadget that could make your teen a better driver. FOX News Radio’s Jeff Monosso with the latest FOX Wheels: Car crashes remain a leading cause of death among American teens and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has compiled a list of several vehicles less than 10 years old and under $12,000 that all got good marks on crash tests and safety including the Chevy Malibu, Ford Fusion and Volkswagen Passat. The IIHS also advises parents buying cars for their teens to think side impact airbags and traction control. But if that’s not enough, Agilis Systems is out with a new motosafety product. (Barford) “We call it the teen driving coach.” Company President Dave Barford using GPS to grade your teen’s driving habits in a daily report card — or real time using… (Barford) “Small little device that plugs into the on-board computer of your car.” That also allows you to see when your teen cross so-called geo-fences. A singing road debuts next month in New Mexico and another reminder from GM on a deadly recall problem. FOX News Radio’s Jeff Monosso with the latest FOX Wheels: It’s FOX Wheels. Another reminder from GM months after the company recalled millions of cars because of a deadly ignition-switch defect. Less than half the owners have gotten their cars fixed. The company now turning to social media and FOX Wheels to get owners to bring their cars in. When you think of historic Route 66, this song might come to mind… (“Route 66”) But there’s a new tune… (“America the Beautiful”) …greeting drivers near Albuquerque on the singing road. (Dosher) “When drivers drive over — it plays ‘America the Beautiful’.” Part of an experiment by Nat Geo to get people to slow down, says the state DOT’s Melissa Dosher. (Dosher) “They actually stamped musical notes into the asphalt.” Rumble strips that when driven across at the proper speed… (Dosher) “45 miles per hour.” The song in its proper pitch can be heard. October is car care month, and time to start thinking about getting your vehicle prepared for winter driving. FOX News Radio’s Jeff Monosso has the details in “FOX Wheels”: It’s FOX Wheels.  Roads around much of the nation are about to ice up and there are some simple things that you can do to make sure that your vehicle is ready before the snow flies. Under the hood… (Calkins) “Make sure that you’re oil’s been changed according to the manufacturer’s recommendation.” And, AAA’s Mike Calkins says make sure other fluids like winter wash and antifreeze are topped off. And, don’t over look the condition of your vehicle’s battery. (Calkins) “When the temperature drops down to freezing, the electrical demands could double on the battery. You could easily end up with a no start.” Also, make sure your tires are properly inflated; that your wipers are strong, and that all your lights are working. And, ready your trunk with the”just in case” supplies. (Calkins) “Stuff like nonperishable food. Make sure you have an ice scraper, a snow shovel, perhaps a traction aide like sand, salt, or cat litter.” And blankets, and water. John Capp, director of global safety strategies at GM expects to put Super Cruise technology in Cadillacs in 2017, and that the ultimate goal… (Capp) “Get to a stage where we can avoid crashes.” The next gen Volvo XC90 also includes semi-autonomous features that focus on city driving safety. Human errors, according to industry experts, account for most road accidents.
