 Family Movie Moms :: Amanda White {GCM Ep 27} | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 39:05

Movies. I really like them. And according to the billions of dollars Hollywood spends each year to make movies, I’m guessing a lot of you like movies, too. In fact, if you are a mom reading,  you may even look forward to the gathering of your little ones each week for “family movie night”. But do you struggle, like I do to find movies everyone wants to watch? Or even a movie that will help you think more than lose brain cells? Wouldn’t it be nice if you could relax, enjoy a movie with your family AND teach your children more about God’s great big story? Well, my good friend, Amanda White (OhAmanda.com)…who also likes movies and loves Jesus…and I want to help your family do just that. In today’s episode entitled, “Family Movie Moms” we share a lot of our theories/philosophies about movies and… a new vision. Our goal is to 1)write frequent family movie discussion guides 2) broadcast a regular feature on the GCM podcast, called “Family Movie Moms”. Each show will include current movies reviews and ideas/questions to help teach your kiddos how to see truth and gain discernment as they view entertainment. In today’s episode we chat about (quite a few things): * personal family screen time limits * the effects of video games on our kids * how much t.v. we watched when we were kids * recording movies on our VCR & renting Beta tapes * why we write family movie discussion guides * thoughts on “The Lego Movie” & “Disney’s Pirate Fairy” * being counter-cultural and yet engaging culture * teaching our children discretion when watching shows (not to emulate everything they watch). * thoughts on “How to Train your Dragon 2” & “Frozen” * difference between watching a movie once & meditating on a movie * this quote: photo source Connect with Amanda: Twitter :: Instagram :: Facebook :: Blog Show Notes: * “Pirates of Penzance” * “Wizard of Oz” * Phil Vischer Podcast * “The Lego Movie” Family Discussion Guide (GCM) * “Disney’s Pirate Fairy” Movie Discussion Guide (OhAmanda) * “How to Train your Dragon 2”  * “Frozen”

 Celebrating Small :: Christie Elkins {GCM Ep 26} | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 31:50

I’ve noticed a new trend. Whether it’s an Instagram post or Facebook status, people are verbalizing a desire to live “smaller” lives. Focusing less on everyone knowing everything, they want their close friends closer. Narrowing in on what really matters by living small. Today’s podcast guest, Christie Elkins (Letters from the Nest), by default, found herself living “small”. Born in LaFollette, TN it has taken her a lifetime to embrace where God placed her. Then she went beyond embracing, to thriving and choosing to live even smaller. I’m such a huge fan of this gal. Love her sweet accent, her heart, and how she has truly blossomed over the last couple years. Listen to Christie and I chat about: * Marrying her high school sweetheart & how a lady from the local community spelled out why they were a perfect match, going back generations * What she did to embrace and bloom where she was planted * How she is continuing a tradition her grandfather started * How even in a small town you can desire a simpler life-what she did about it–their life homeschooling on a farm * A viral post she wrote about a lie moms often believe–how big your role as a mom is in God’s eyes.  Birds & Bees? Oh, help me please :: Mary Flo Ridley {GCM Ep 25} | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 40:49

Did you figure out today’s podcast topic from the title? If not, let me spell it out for you. . . S. E. X. (typing that word is so much easier then saying it, whew). Today’s guest, Mary Flo Ridley, shares how to help our kids develop healthy attitudes and behaviors about sex. Honestly, after hearing her speak one time, at a MOPS meeting, I felt better equipped to teach my boys about “the birds & the bees.” Mary Flo is not a medical doctor and does not claim to be an expert. But she has been teaching on this topic for 30 years, has three grown children and is a fellow mom. I don’t know about you but usually I’d rather learn from another mom, any day. Through a simple step-by-step program, Mary Flo helps answer the questions: * What should we call “private parts”? * If I teach them the names, how do I keep them from repeating them in public or teaching their friends? * How do I become the one my kids go to with questions about sex? * How early should I talk to my kids? * What exactly should I say? Her answers will most likely surprise you. But once you hear the rationale you can’t deny how right she is. “These conversations should be simple, straight-forward, and to the subjects that children are curious about–their own bodies, how babies are born, and how babies are made. They have a natural curiosity about these things, and I want to capture those moments instead of running from them.” -Mary Flo Ridley Here’s a little video clip with another thought when considering “how soon should I talk to my child about sex”: (if reading via email, click here to watch the video) I hope our podcast helps equip you and removes dread regarded a singular “talk”. May an open dialogue begin between you and your kiddos that will last through adolescence.  To learn more, definitely check out Mary Flo’s books in the links below.
