recording Gathering:#686 Come and Journey Psalm: #58 The Lord is Kind and Merciful Preparation: #396 The Cross of Jesus Communion: O God You Search Me Meditation: Come Back to Me Meditation: # 410  Return to God Closing: #416 Lord Throughout These Forty Days Father Nick was the presider, assisted by Deacon John Fanelle. March 16th day-long retreat about the eucharist was announced. Following the evening Mass on that day will be a dramatization of the Passion by a young Polish man from Chicago. He has given performances for the past seven years on the Passion. This is one of two performances on the West Coast. The homily began with the frustration of expecting to harvest fruit, and finding nothing on the tree. Would you blame the owner for wanting to cut down the tree that doesn't bear fruit? The parable is powerful in the sense that it asks us "who are we in the parable of the fig tree". The owner of the orchard? The gardener? Or perhaps, the fig tree? In our spiritual lives, where do we come in? Almost every day we are in the garden, making mistakes, and failing to bear fruit. Suffering was believed to be a result of sin. Jesus had a tough time convincing people that God doesn't punish us in this way. God is the owner of the orchard, and when he sees the barren fig tree, and thinks about cutting it down, he instead listens to the gardener, who says let's wait one more year. Are we the owner of the orchard in our lives? Do we rush to condemn? Or do we give second chances? Are we the gardeners? Are we people that encourage? Are we the barren tree? What do we produce? Do we bear good fruit, or bitter fruit? The gifts of compassion, understanding, and love are available to those of us that are open to them. God can't make us repent. It has to come from within our hearts and minds. People's hearts are changed during this season. Let us all try to be the gardeners.

The Men's Choir sang, directed and accompanied on the piano by Laura Lotz. Omega Orchestra supported the Men's Choir. Paul Williamson on Trumpet/Flugelhorn, Aaron on French Horn, Vincent on oboe, Lynda on flute, and Michelle Thompson on violin. The homily was wide-ranging, with Father Ed opening with a discussion of how Jesus taught his apostles how to pray and how Jesus tried to teach them how important prayer was to Him. Rather than just being a process of simply saying the words, prayer needs to move the heart and reform the thinking. "Love God. Love your neighbor. That's all there is to it." This morning, Father Ed was one of several priests at a Mass of Anointing of the Sick. Father Ed described it as follows. As I was standing in the back with the others, I noticed someone standing in the back, perhaps ill at ease. The celebrant at the homily went into the whole idea of the anointing of the sick, your sins are forgiving. We went to the actual anointing. The man in the back of the church was anointed. He then died, being taken away in an ambulance. He came for that anointing, he was anointed, all his sins were forgiven, and almost immediately, he was standing in front of the God that created him. When we pray the Our Father, and we say "forgive us our trespasses", may we always be reminded of stories such as this particular anointing of the sick.

recording Opening #746 All People That On Earth Do DwellPsalm #74 The Fragrance of Christ, second refrainPreparation #590 You Are HereMeditation #654 All That Is HiddenClosing #517 Praise To You O Christ Our SaviorPostlude "Festive Trumpet Tune" by David German, played by Viktor Shekhtman. Father Nicholas Dempsey was the presider. Mary was the cantor.  "When I became a man I put aside childish things." "…the greatest of these is love." "No prophet is welcome in their own land." Father Nick promoted the faith sharing groups for Lent, recommending that people either join one of the organized groups or start one of their own.  What does "prophet" mean? Someone who tells the future? In this homily, Father Nick taught that a prophet is someone prepared to witness to Jesus Christ and the values of the Gospel. We are all called to be prophets. Stand tall, and hold your head high. Father Nick discussed the book "Black Like Me" by John Howard Griffin in the context of being a prophet for truth and justice.  The prayer for the week was "Lord you are my rock and my fortress."
