What's a judicial Code of Conduct? What does it mean for a judiciary to be truly independent from other branches of government? Does everyone have fair access to justice?In this month's Africa Conversations podcast, we invited Mrs. Barbara Villez, Law expert and former Chair of the Department of Anglophone Studeis at the University of Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint Denis, Mr. Thomas Atenga, Research Scholar in Political Science at the University in Nantes, and Mrs. Kathy Atkisson, military lawyer and litigator to look closely at each of these to issues in African and American contexts and to give us their expert perspectives.Judicial reform was one of the key issues on President Obama's agenda during his three country tour of Africa. While in Senegal, he held a closed-door roundtable meeting with 11 African Supreme Court Justices to discuss issues concerning judicial reform, and reinforced the necessity of a strong independent justice system as an essential part of good governance practices.Photo above: The U.S. Supreme Court AP Photo

Africa Conversations est de retour pour une nouvelle saison, suite à une courte pause cet été. Pour démarrer cette nouvelle saison, Africa Conversations a eu l'honneur de s'entretenir avecl’ambassadeurdes États-Unis en Ouagadougou, Tulinabo Mushingi. Ambassadeur Mushingi, qui a fait une brève escale à Paris avant de prendre ses fonctions en Burkina Faso, nous a parlé de ses origines uniques (il a quitté la République démocratique du Congo pour poursuivre ses études aux Etats-Unis), ses priorités pour la Burkina Faso, et nous a livré ses conseils pour des jeunes africains qui cherchent à avoir un impact dans leurs communautés ou pays.

September's Africa Conversation features a vibrant interview withU.S. Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Tulinabo Mushingi, who made a brief stop in Paris before continuing on to begin his official duties in Burkina Faso.Ambassador Mushingi discussed his unique background, having left the Democratic Republic of the Congo to pursue his studies in the United States, his priorites for Burkina Faso, and gave his advice to young Africans seeking to make an impact in their local communities and countries.

We welcomed Cédric Kalonji, renowned Congolese blogger and journalist, Renée Kaplan, multimedia and broadcast media consultant and former editor at France 24, and Ilan Moss, editor and new media consultant at the World Health Organization, to our studio to share their views on this issue as well as their best practices when it comes to leveraging social media and new media in Africa

The U.S. Department of State is actively engaged in sports programs in an effort to build ever-strengthening relations between the United States and other nations, which is why we've decided to focus this month's podcast on how sports can be an effective tool for diplomacy and development . Recently, we had the pleasure of speaking to Joannie Bewa, a Beninese doctor and a young African leader on the rise. Following her participation in President Obama's Young Africa Leaders Forum in 2012, she created a youth organization called the "Young Beninese Leaders Association," which addresses the issues of youth, leadership, education, women's empowerment, and entrepreneurship. She shared with us her reflections from the forum, discussed her organization's projects, and let us in on her tips for success. For Joannie, there isn't really a secret to success, one just has to be willing to work hard!

We are back for another episode of Africa Conversations, a podcast series which brings together Americans and Africans from all walks of life to talk about U.S. and African issues. In this month's podcast, we discussed the challenges to peace and security in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in the Sahel region, with retired U.S. diplomat William Jordan, American University of Paris professor Steve Ekovich, and Bakary Traoré, a PhD candidate studying the conflict in northern Mali. The podcast was also an opportunity to talk about the efforts that are being made by both African countries and the international community to promote stability in the region and prevent future conflicts, as well as a chance to highlight some success stories of countries that are making big strides post crisis
