Two cool stories came out of O'Reilly's Emerging Technology conference this week. Especially cool: It interacts with a $50 sensor kit called the PicoBoard that includes a light sensor, a sound sensor, a button, a slider, and four ports for measuring electrical resistance, so kids can instantly add real-world measurements to your programs. Also at ETech, we talked with the founders of Playpower.org, who have a plan to educate the world using $12 computers -- already available in developing countries -- that are based on 8-bit technology. We also review the new iPod Shuffle, which is about the size of a stick of Trident gum and works nicely as a tie clip, besides. And we talk about the new Newton trainers: running shoes that help you run as if you were barefoot, on the balls of your feet.

In this week's podcast, we also talk about the design trend of wrapping everything in a bamboo exterior.
