Nesha Sanghavi of University Girls Apparel (Tech of Sports) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 38:48

Nesha Sanghavi, owner of University Girls, is a former West Virginia University Varsity cheerleader for the men’s football and basketball teams and a WVU alumni. During her time as a cheerleader, Nesha noticed a lack of fashion in the collegiate apparel market and decided to take matters into her own hands, creating University Girls Apparel. After graduating from WVU with a degree in Finance and Economics, Nesha was accepted to the top fashion school, Parsons the New School for Design in New York City. During her studies, she was invited to finish her degree while working for PUMA at their global headquarters in Germany. Nesha has done a great amount of market research to develop and produce unique women’s tops that are not currently offered in the collegiate market. While University Girls offers styles for women of all ages, their main targeting customer is an alumni woman, aged 25+. There are 2 issues in women’s collegiate merchandise that University Girls Apparel aims to fix, sizing and styling. What University Girls does differently: Sizing – Currently, the majority of women’s collegiate merchandise is only offered in junior sizing. Nesha conducted several focus groups where she found that average sized women had to buy the largest size offered, or could not fit in any sizes at all. These women were also of an alumni age with discretionary income to spend. She decided to custom make all of her size charts, allowing for average sized women to feel comfortable and confident in University Girls Apparel. In her second collection, and after another round of focus groups, Nesha added Plus Sizing into her collection. Plus sizing has been recognized as an underdeveloped market and not many companies are offering this size set. Styling – The women’s collegiate market has become saturated with basic t-shirts and fleece with screen prints, or loud and busy graphic prints. Nesha has designed tops and fleece that are in line with what is hot and on trend in the regular sportswear market. Her goal is to take styles that women love to wear in their everyday lives, and translate them to the collegiate market by focusing on the silhouette of the style, rather than the graphics. This results in styles that women can feel fashionable in, and are age appropriate, can be worn to work and out for the night. UG Apparel is currently licensed for 20 top universities across the US including Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee and Nebraska.”

Google Provides World Cup Venue Views (Waves of Tech) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 35:15

This week on The Waves of Tech 226 and after a two week break, we are here to talk tech! On the show we dive into Halt & Catch Fire, the latest show from AMC. Google provides a new view of World Cup venues and GoDaddy files a $100M IPO. Also, Apple is showing signs of new ideas and people have an online shopping abandonment issue. All this in a quick 40 minutes this week. Enjoy the show and continue to ride…the waves of tech. AMC’s newest fictional drama, Halt and Catch Fire, is a great show. Set in the early 1980s, just one year after IBM released the IBM PC, an unlikely group of three set out to reverse engineer the PC with hopes of gaining traction in the personal computing world. Fans of tech/computer history, you’ll love this show. If you’re looking for a great fictional drama, you’ll love the show. Google Street View – World Cup Venues The biggest international event is set to kick off in a few days – The World Cup. You now have the chance to experience the ins-and-outs of all 12 soccer venues. Google has provided Street View of the World Cup stadiums, include visuals in and around the streets of each stadium. This provides us all a chance to experience to magnitude of the host country, Brazil, and take a trip from the comfort of our own homes. The Abandoned E-Shopping Cart Did you know that nearly $4 trillion of merchandise and goods are left in online shopping carts? Retailers and e-commerce firms are trying to find ways of capturing some of those “lost sales” by employing a variety of strategies. Some firms are sending reminder emails within a three hour window, as that strategy results in nearly a 40% click-back rate. The relationship between the buyer and the product is complex. Perhaps a change to the checkout process, a smoother and streamlined process would help these e-commerce businesses. GoDaddy files for IPO Many of us were surprised when GoDaddy announced the web hosting firm would be filing an Initial Public Offering started at $100M. The firm has showed a history of revenue but continues to show lackluster signs in terms of profitability. This year, 2014, is showing promise as revenues are increasing and profits are being realized. GoDaddy has a very strong brand and image but that will not please all the investors…it’s about dollars and cents now. Apple In recent news, Apple shows some promise in the business and personal travel industry. WiFi in hotels is pretty scarce today, despite advancements in broadband and connectivity. Apple is slated to provide that service directly from Apple devices. Steve provides some details and outlines the course of action.

Because The Ad Men Said So (Flash Past) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:45

Things We Do Because of Advertising We buy things because of advertising. That’s the way it works. Of course, there hasn’t always been advertising as we know it. Since there has been, though, it’s had a huge impact on the way we do things. Things we take for granted as part of life, like engagement rings, toilet paper, deodorant, and even Santa Claus have–at least partially–advertising to thank for even being a thing.
