OS X Yosemite Beta And Criminals Daring The Law (Waves of Tech) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 37:27

This week on The Waves of Tech 231, there is a host of tech talk to get to and it’s all here!  We discuss a variety of topics:  OS X Yosemite Beta and iOS 8, Apple’s iPhone and iPad financial news, in-car technology advancements, and criminals daring law enforcement to find them.  Each week, the tech world is changing and we are here to share the news, analyze the stories, and tell you what you need to know about them all.  Enjoy the show and we hope you continue to ride...those waves of tech. Fire and Adjust Steve had the pleasure of being a guest on Episode 37 of Fire and Adjust. The podcast hosts veterans of the Armed Forces, tells their stories of success since leaving the service, and shares their entrepreneurial spirits. As a great way of supporting veterans, check out this podcast and share their stories with your friends, family members, and veterans of the Armed Forces. OS X Yosemite Beta; iOS 8 and OS X In most cases, beta is something that consumers don’t want to be a part of. Well in this case, Steve came running and tested the beta of OS X Yosemite. With some added aesthetics elements and an updated Finder application, Steve has found that the beta version has caused no failures, no problems, or no issues with the programs and platforms he is using. What has been your experience with the Beta? iPads dip and iPhones roar As a complement to last week’s story of increasing PC sales, we thought we’d share some Apple news. Internationally, we are seeing a drastic increase in iPhones sales but are also seeing a decrease in overall iPad sales. We can attribute the increases to the countries of Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC). There are a variety of reasons for the drop: saturation in the tablet market, high prices, amount of use, and limited day-in day-out usage. Catch me if you can We have all seen World’s Dumbest Criminals on television and are never surprised as to what they do. Well, there are just as dumb criminals in cyberspace. In Baltimore, a criminal that violated his probation comments on the Baltimore PD’s #WantedWednesday post by stating that there was no way law enforcement would find him. Well, within the next 24 hours...he was caught and sent back to jail. Never underestimate the dumb criminal in the world. Cadillac Powermat Charging We love talking about in-car technology and in-car innovations. Benz, Mercedes, Ford, and Toyota have all integrated very cool tech. GM is introducing a new feature in some focused Cadillac models - Powermat wireless charging. Hidden within the center console, the charging system is well located and well integrated. This should make traveling with family and friends a little bit easier!

Remembering Apollo 11 And Microsoft Layoffs (Waves of Tech) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 40:08

Microsoft is making big news with their massive layoff of 18,000, many tied to the Nokia-branch of their operations. On the other hand, PC sales are expected to rise significantly over the next few years. We also reminisce about Apollo 11 and the moon landing, 45 years later. Finally, Amazon makes our headlines again with Unlimited. Enjoy the show and continue to ride...the waves of tech. Microsoft Layoffs Since the arrival of Nadella as CEO, the stocks of Microsoft have increased nearly 33 percent. We can expect stocks to rise further now that Nadella is cutting nearly 18,000 jobs from the tech software giant. Many jobs are associated with the Nokia functions of the corporation, one that has floundered in recent years. Stockholders and financial gurus have been calling for Microsoft to scale back as they believe Microsoft is stretching their "operational hands" beyond what they should. This announcements makes for the 4th largest layoff is the tech industry. PC News Looks Good Microsoft, HP, and other PC manufacturers are set to rake in some great profits over the next few years. For one of the first times since the 2008 financial crisis, companies are reaching into their pockets to strengthen and rebuild their PC infrastructures. Many are working of the 12-year old operation system of Windows XP and simply upgrading system processing chips and hardware are no longer doing the trick. And of course, look for Intel to be the leading in the financial gains in this equation. Apollo 11 At the age of 14, Steve recalls sitting in the car with his family experiencing the landing of Apollo 11 on the moon. The crackling of the AM radio feed and broadcaster's voice is where many heard the news. 45 years later, it is incredible to think that the technological power in our phones is greater than the technological power that sent three brave American patriots into the orbits of Earth. We salute these men and all the engineers and minds behind make the American Dream a reality for us all. Amazon Unlimited With so much Amazon news of late, we could probably produce an entire show focused on the online giant. They continue to capture the headlines, this time with Unlimited. Unlimited is a library card type service that allows access to nearly 600,000 titles for a small fee of $10 per month. This is a simple addition to their already boastful selection of products, services, and features.

Cory Lerios of Pablo Cruise (Conversation Corner) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:05

If you are a fan of 70s and 80s music, you know the legendary band, Pablo Cruise. Cory Lerios, Dave Jenkins and Steve Price are the three original members and now they are joined by Larry Antonino, who plays bass. With top-10 hits all over the place in "Whatcha Gonna Do?", "Love Will Find A Way” and “Cool Love", Pablo Cruise still lives on today and tours regularly. Lerios is a vocalist and a fantastic keyboardist. He also composes and writes music for television shows. It’s great to talk to Lerios and see what else the band is up to and I also ask him about many other topics including why Will Ferrell was wearing a Pablo Cruise t-shirt in the movie, Step Brothers. Discussion 1. Pablo Cruise 2. Touring 3. Playing the hits 4. “ Atlanta June” 5. Will Ferrell wearing a Pablo Cruise t-shirt 6. His kids and other current projects

Cell Phone Stories And Solar Trash Cans (Waves of Tech) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 33:36

This week on The Waves of Tech 229, after a bit of a delay from the last podcast, we are here to talk all things tech!! We love it and hope you do too. On the show today, we discuss how the landline continues its dive in usage, the use of solar trash cans, and a new way of reserving tables using your personal device. We wrap up the show with a crazy story of an iPhone making a nine month adventure back to its owner and the telling a tragic story of a 15-year losing her life. Enjoy the podcast and continue to ride…the waves of tech. Reserving Tables Steve experienced a new method of reserving tables that he hadn’t seen before. While visiting and staying in San Diego hotel, he noticed many youth placing their cell phone on a chair to reserve their seat, rather than the traditional leaning of a chair or draping a napkin. Is this a fairly common method used by many now? With theft so rampant, probably not the best approach the take. Solar trash cans The City of Philadelphia’s waste management system received a high-tech upgrade recently. The city has installed a number of solar-powered trash compactors on the streets of Philly, saving nearly $1 million a year. In addition to self powering, the built-in communication system relays information back to personnel and informs them of the bin’s capacity. We hope to see these systems pop up in other cities around the nation. 4 out of 10 have no home phone Landlines are continuously falling out of favor from consumers in the home, and with good reason. Recent data shows that 4 out of 10 homes no longer use and pay for a landline. Many have resorted to simply relying on the cell phone as the primary method of staying in touch with friends and family. We at NetCastStudio do not rely on landlines anymore. What is your take on the future of the landline. Lost iPhone journey In an incredible story, a man lost his cell phone in a silo containing 280,000 pounds of grains. After taking a trip from Oklahoma to Louisiana, from the Arkansas River to the Mississippi, and from the Panama Canal to the coast of Japan, the owner of the phone received a phone call. The individual in Japan was nice enough to contact the owner and return his phone, roughly nine months after losing it. Teen killed while trying to save her iPhone In a very tragic sequence of events, a 15-year old is dead after being thrown off the trunk of a vehicle as she attempted to retrieve her stolen iPhone. A man stole the phone from the hands of the 15-year old as her an her 7-year old sister walked home. A family is now mourning the loss of a young child because a moment of judgment and the act of a criminal took her life.

Data Caps And Putting On The iPad Brakes (Waves of Tech) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 40:27

After taking a few weeks off due to some unexpected circumstances, we are back this week on The Waves of Tech 228. Among other topics, the World Cup and Twitter make headlines and show the truly international scale of social media. Data caps are again being questioned and draws concerns for many users. We finish the show by discussing the fallout of the Aereo ruling and explaining the debacle that the LA School District has stepped into. The World Cup is the one international sporting event that brings millions, if not billions, of people together. One thing the many of us share, in addition to the love of soccer, is social media. The World Cup fans set a new Twitter record for most tweets in a minute, beating the record previously record during the most recent Super Bowl. So, keep tweeting and perhaps another record will be set. Another reason data caps are bad When a man realized he had gone over on his data package, he sought the answer. The answer come in the form of an Amazon Fire TV bug that supported an Internet-based screen saver, rather than a localized safe mode. This opens the debate for the future of data caps and the impact that may have on the user, the corporations, and the industry. Let us know your thoughts on whether you believe we are on a collision course for debate and change in the industry. Aereo dies on the legal vine; Fox takes advantage of the ruling In a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court found that Aereo was operating illegally on the grounds of current regulations and FCC rules. The debate raged for a six-month period and ended with Aereo suspended their service. As the previous topic, this opens up the debate for the future of Internet-based TV service, the power broadcasters now hold, and what this means for the technology behind Aereo. LA School District puts on the iPad brakes We previously reported that the LA Unified School District had purchased over 30,000 iPads for students and teachers to use in the classroom. In a disheartening turn, the LAUSD has now decided to scrap the perfectly suitable tablet and refocus attention on other tablets/machines. We have nothing positive to say about the school district and you will hear why we take that stance. Your thoughts? Let us know.

Amazon Smartphone and Deployed Fathers (Waves of Tech) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 36:06

Amazon event Wednesday 10 AM PST In just under seven years, Amazon has become a household name with the release of the Kindle, Kindle Fire HD, and the recent Amazon FireTV. Ladies and gentlemen, you can now add a smartphone to your wish-list. This Wednesday, Amazon is set to announce the news and provide some detail to those with inquiring minds. The company has been very profitable…not to bad for a company that started as an online bookstore. Steve’s Digital Conversion A few shows past, we discuss how most companies do not offer great services and pricing when trying to bundle of our home-use needs (Internet, cell phone, cable, home phone). In an attempt to reduce some costs around the house and find the best deals, we went on a quest to find the perfect combination for our needs. Listen and see what happens. Fire and Technology With so much new technology, it is often the case that we forget about some of the simplest and most reliable technology out there – Fire Detectors. A simple construct saves thousands of lives, memories, and loved ones every year. Steve had the unfortunate opportunity of having to deal with a kitchen fire, yet simple technologies help us day in and day out that we often forget. Deployed dads on Father’s Day We are sure you feel the same about this topic. It is terribly difficult to watch commercials and TV events where we see American servicemen and servicewomen deployed, a far distance from their families. With now having access to platforms such as Skype, Facebook, and email via a secure site, all the deployed have an opportunity to engage their sons, daughters, wives, and husbands on a regular basis.

Smoked Meats & Cheeses (Flash Past) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 21:51

A long time ago man discovered fire. Some time after that, it’s likely that he realized the smoke keeps bugs away. It’s possible that this is how smoking foods became a way of preparation and preservation. In this week’s show, Lyle and Danny discuss the finer points of smoking and barbecuing foods.
