OWC Thunderbolt 2 Dock for all your connection needs | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 4:56

Whether you need more ports for your Thunderbolt-equipped PC, or you want a single cable to dock with your computer station, may be the best solution. Thunderbolt 2 offers throughput speeds up to 20 GB/s and can be daisy-chained with up six other Thunderbolt devices. This dock starts with two Thunderbolt 2 ports that are backwards compatible with the original Thunderbolt. The has five USB 3.0 ports, whereas most docks offer only three. All of these are backwards compatible with older USB versions. The two side USB 3.0 ports output 1.5 amps of power, which is enough to recharge tablets and smaller mobile devices. These powered ports will continue to charge connected devices even when the main Thunderbolt-connected device is off. For legacy connectivity, OWC included a Firewire 800 port. Also included is a gigabit ethernet port, which is wonderful for wiring modern PCs to a network for a faster and more reliable connection. For multimedia needs, you can connect any Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort adapter for an external display, or use the HDMI 1.4b port to connect a 4K screen. Lastly, the offers analog stereo output and mono input through separated 3.5 mm ports. OWC includes a power adapter. The dock is sleek and highly convenient. I love that, with my new MacBook Pro, I now have only two cables to connect: power and Thunderbolt 2, and then I'm connected to every device in my office. .

Wireless recording is expensive. But connects to any dynamic or battery-powered condenser microphone via XLR to record for easy post-production synchronization. More than just a recorder, TASCAM packed in some handy audio processing features: adjustable mic gain, low-cut filter, limiter, and automatic record level. Connect your professional XLR podcasting mic to a computer or iOS device with Shure's new MVi from their Motiv product line! The MVi is dsigned for XLR professional microphones or 1/4″-connected instruments. It offers a 3.5 mm headphone out for latency-free monitoring. But the real beauty is in the digital connection. The Shure MVi can connect directly to any PC via USB or to any modern iOS device via MFi-certified Lightning! The XLR/1/4″ combo jack can provide full phantom power when connected via USB, and up to 12 volts of phantom power when connected via Lightning to an iOS device. The Shure MVi provides several DSP modes with built in compression and equalization: flat (unprocessed), speech, singing, accoustic instrument (guitars, strings, piano, etc.), and loud (good for bands).  Audio-Technica BP40 is a new studio dynamic mic to compete with Heil PR40 | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 7:01

Audio-Technica makes two great entry-level microphones for starting podcasters: the  and the . Now, they're entering the higher end range with the . The BP40 is Audio-Technica's first broadcast microphone. It's a large-diaphragm dynamic microphone but also captures a broader range of sound, like a condenser microphone would. By moving the mic capsule deeper into the BP40, Audio-Technica was able to integrate a pop filter into the design. Instead of connecting the microphone to a stand by its bass, the uses a detached ring-mount that nicely balances the weight of the microphone. Audio-Technica's AT8484 custom shockmount is the easiest I'm ever seen! The microphone locks in with a simple push and turn and still nicely balances the microphone. The BP40 also includes a low-cut-rolloff switch to reduce anything below 80 Hz (typically rumbles caused by passing cars, bumps on the microphone, and such). I was most impressed with the apparent durability of the BP40. The microphone is heavy and had a solid metal chassis. I could not yet compare the BP40 with other podcasting microphones like the or . But I did like the tone and off-axis noise rejection. The basic and the shockmount for $99 in summer, 2015.

With Zoom's interchangeable mic capsules, you can connect two additional XLR mics, a shotgun mic, mid-side capsule, and more. The offers a touchscreen display along with physical transport controls. Connect the Zoom Q8 to other devices with HDMI output and USB for interface or webcam-streaming. The .

JK Audio CellTap 4C lets you record split-channel phone/VoIP calls on any recorder | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 3:47

Record phone and VoIP conversations from a mobile device into any 3.5 mm stereo recorder with JK Audio's new CellTap 4C! The CellTap 4C connects to a smartphone, tablet, or other mobile devices via a 3.5 mm TRRS cable (combined input and output). Connect your TRRS headset (such as the Apple EarPods) and you'll be able to hear and speak to your phone-calling guest. Then, connect a standard TRS (stereo) 3.5 mm cable from the CellTap 4C to any stereo audio recorder. The result is that you'll get a split-track stereo recording of your call. Your audio will be on the left channel and your guest will be on the right. Then, use your editing software to split these to separate mono tracks and you'll get full editing and processing control! The 3.5 mm TRS (stereo) record line can connect to any stereo recording device: Zoom H1, Zoom H5, Roland R-05, a computer with stereo line-in, and such. As long as the recording device is stereo, you'll get both sides of the conversation. The CellTap 4C isn't just for recording phone calls! You could use it for any VoIP calling system—Skype, Google+ Hangouts, FaceTime audio, and more. This will work with any Android, iOS, or Windows smartphone or tablet! It could even work on modern PCs with the combine headset audio jack (TRRS). This is an ideal option for remote podcast interviews with very little gear. JK Audio's CellTap 4C is now available for under $100.

Cheap lighting kit for video podcasting or YouTube | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 24:11

Most podcast and YouTube videos will look a lot better with better lighting. Here's a cheap lighting kit that works great with any DSLR or camcorder setup, puts out really bright light,  and costs under $200! The  is really the same as the . Notice the model number similarities? But the Fancierstudio label is $10 under ePhoto's identical kit. This cheap lighting kit has three lights and puts out 3,800 watts of light for only $169.99 ($10 more for the ePhoto one). You get a carrying case, two large softboxes, and one smaller softbox for an overhead hair light. Low build quality (expected) The build quality is quite low on this cheap kit, with a lot of plastic and thin aluminum. The carry case doesn't make much sense because these lights would take a very long time to disassemble and re-assemble. So don't plan to travel with these lights; they work best staying in your studio. Versatile lighting gear Each softbox holds five CFL bulbs. The kit includes 60-watt, 5500 K (daylight) bulbs for each softbox. Because CFL can't be dimmed, the five bulbs have independent switches, letting you control how much light is cast based on the number of bulbs. The 3,800-watt kit includes a third softbox, designed for as an overhead hair light. It holds four 45-watt bulbs. This light has two light switches, each controlling two of the four bulbs. To make the hair light more stable, the kit comes with a heavy-duty stand, boom arm, hook, and counterweight bag (fill it with your own weights). Alternatively, you can get the  for three of the same softboxes and 4,500-watt output for $199.99. I chose this cheap lighting kit for myself because of its versatility, light output, and affordability. I can use the hair light either overhead, or mount it horizontally to use as a third softbox. More light for a lower cost The closest alternative is the , which is built a little nicer, but cost almost 50% more and outputs only 60% as much light as the . If you want bright, versatile lighting at an affordable price to enhance your YouTube or podcast videos, consider either the , or the . A little caution with this cheap lighting kit My first order was missing a part and had a wrong light stand. So make sure you have everything you were supposed to get. If you have problems, Amazon's customer service will be far more helpful than Fancierstudio's. But for a bright, cheap lighting kit, I think this Fancierstudio option will work great, whether you're video-podcasting or making video on YouTube.
