Meanwhile, Donald Young beat Juan Ignacio Chela to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, and Andy Roddick took down Julien Benneteau in straight sets. Finally, Andy Murray and Roger Federer qualified for the ATP World Tour Finals last week, joining Novak Djokovic and Rafal Nadal as the four who have qualified.

Serena Williams came out on top of a blockbuster third-round match when she beat Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 7-6 (5), and Francesca Schiavone rallied from a one set deficit to beat Chanelle Scheepers 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3. On the men’s side, 16-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer beat Marin Cilic 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, and Mardy Fish reached the fourth round after he took down Kevin Anderson in straight sets.

James Waterson reports on news from the US Open. Maria Sharapova has been eliminated from the US Open. She hit 60 unforced errors and 12 double faults en route to a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 loss to Flavia Pennetta of Italy. On the men's side, Donald Young scored the biggest win of his career when he outlasted Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6, while Andy Murray came back from a two-set deficit to beat Robin Haase. Rafal Nadal had an easy day, as his opponent, Nicolas Mahut, retired with Nadal leading 6-2, 6-2.

Roger Federer and Serena Williams secured easy victories, and they were joined by Tomas Berdych, Kevin Anderson, Andrea Petkovic and Francesca Schiavone in the third round. Sloane Stephens upset 23rd-seeded Shahar Peer in straight sets, and Vania King also scored a win of her own. Finally, Tommy Haas said today he considered changing his country of representation to the United States, but said he was too busy to make the phone call to the ATP.

Another American teen, Jack Sock, won his first ever match at the US Open when he took down Marc Giquel in four sets. Andy Murray and Juan Martin del Potro won in straight sets, and Julien Benneteau upset 10th-seeded Nicolas Almagro in straight sets.

David Ferrer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Fernando were among the men’s winners of the day. American 22-year-old Donald Young made history as he became the first American to win a match on the National Tennis Center’s new Court 17.
