We were saddened to hear of the recent passing of the man who played the greatest scruffy detective on TV, Peter Falk. We're great fans of Mr Falk here at the Moonbase and so we thought we'd turn this week's show over to the theme of detective work. As a result, you'll hear lots of our favourite cop show themes, though not necessarily as you may have heard them before.
This week we celebrate the imminent centenary of that giant of 20th film composition, Bernard Herrmann. We also pick up on a theme of last week's show and play a track from Irving Fields' fusion of Jewish and Latin music, Bagels and Bongos. Plus, we have two tracks from the brand new Bongolian album as well as several other tasty treats for you.
Following on from our exploration of the world of commerce last week we've decided it's time to dive into the deep end and have a whole show scrutinising (and gently tickling the ribs of) the world's major faiths (and some minor ones too).
We've been thinking for a while that it was about time we tackled some of the grand themes of modern life. However, before tackling more controversial topics such as politics, religion, sex or the lighter side of death, we thought we'd start by looking at the world of commerce. This was largely prompted by the latest release on Jonny Trunk's record label which is an 81(!) track collection of advertising work by that genius Barry Gray. Best known for his work on Gerry Anderson's TV productions such as Thunderbirds, UFO, Captain Scarlet, Joe 90 and Space 1999, it may come as a surprise to learn that Barry Gray also had an illustrious career composing music for commercials.
On the show this week we welcome back special guest Space Disco Jeff for his annual visit to the Moonbase. As you can probably guess, this means it's time to get out your galactic glitter ball and clear a space in your lounge for some serious flare-swinging action.
This week's show attempts to straddle the worlds of alarm clocks and twanging surf guitar. Alarm clocks are provided by the Advisory Circle's Jon Brooks who has somehow managed to craft an entire album made entirely from the sounds made by a Braun AB-30 alarm clock. The twanging guitar comes from Stories in Sound and the Surf Teens.
We celebrate grandfather of the modern folk song, Bob Dylan, a very happy 01000110th (that's 70 to) birthday. Every track on the show is a Dylan composition, though the arrangements vary from big band now sound, through hysterical spoken word to steel drum and chiptune.
Releases and reissues from, Dutton Vocalion. We look ahead to what promises to be a very exciting Glasgow Jazz Festival as well as new music from The High Llamas, D. D. Denham and the Moon Wiring Club.
We reach out to our younger listeners (or at least our younger-at-heart listeners) with a selection of songs by, for or which we hope will at least appeal to children of all ages. We'll be hearing a heart-felt folk song about cookies, some bedtime music, some unfeasibly chirpy 8-bit music from Japan and possibly the first example of the word "yo" on Project Moonbase.
Some recent releases and reissues including the new yet old sounds of the Rhythmagic Orchestra, some classic afro-cuban loveliness from Machito, Jonny Trunk on Ghost Box, a track from the new High Llamas album, more from the vaults of EMI Pakistan as well as an extraordinary new genre: pan-pipe disco.
We celebrate all things Finnish as every track on the show hails from that Nordic nation. We featurure a wonderful Finnish label by the name of Fonal Records who have been producing some quite extraordinary sounds over the last few years. We also have music from old favourites Laika and Cosmonauts, Aavikko, Jimi Tenor and a new discovery Frederik!
This week Gershon Kingsley's tune, Popcorn in particular some moustache-twirling interpretations of said tune. We devote this week's show to some of these extraordinary arrangements. We also have tracks from Italian library music supremo, Giampiero Boneschi, some Enoch Light, some Bruce Haack re-imagined by Brother Cleve and possibly the first example of chiptune on vinyl (or at least flexi-disc) from all the way back in 1983.
One of the giants of exotica, in fact one of the creators of exotica, namely Mr Martin Denny. So on the show this week you'll be hearing the sultry sunlit sounds of Martin Denny as well as music by some of his proteges and some most interesting arrangements of some of his tunes.
New albums by Shawn Lee and the Natural Yogurt Band more from Dayton Ohi, some spooky theremin music, some classical steel and a shameless attempt to hop aboard the Rebecca Black bandwagon.
This is an evening dedicated to one of the founding members of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Daphne Oram.
