Project Moonbase – The Historic Sound of the Future | Unusual music show | Podcast | Space cult | projectmoonbase.com

Summary: Project Moonbase is filled with music to surprise, delight and occasionally horrify you. Made by someone who really cares (and his prisoner). We bring you music you’ve never heard before that will put a smile on your face, open your third eye and make you dance. We love space age bachelor pad music, library music, charity shop cheese, hauntology, ping pong stereo, moog music, sitar-driven psychedelia, lounge, the retro-futuristic, contemporary electronica, soundtrack music, radiophonics, euro-pop, orchestral-pop, industrial-opera, hyphens, 8bit, chip tune, skwee, uneasy listening and steel drums. We’ve been known to salute the theramin, sidle up to an ondes Martenot and smile beneficently on the ukelele. Every episode includes the unnecessary news: the strange, the weird, the futuristic and the fun. Join us now and in the future!

PMB065: Introduction to Personal Computing (Perrey & Kingsley, Wing, The Bran Flakes, France Gall, Bruce Haack, Covox, Joel Vandroogenbroeck, John Baker, Gianni Safred, Jonathan Gibbs) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:02:41

This week on the show we kick off a new occasional part-work series of shows in which we aim to introduce listeners to the exciting new world of personal computing. This week's topics include computer safety, jazz computing, computer romance, programming yourself and computing in German.

PMB064: The Birds (The Advisory Circle, Spacedog, Moondog, Julie Andrews, Jean-Jacques Perrey, Neal Hefti, Rick Jones, Ivor Cutler, Jim Fassett) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:58:25

Prompted on the one hand by the inclusion of an owl-themed track on the new Spacedog album and on the other by a seagull-themed track on Jonny Trunk's recently released collection of music and songs used in Fingerbobs, we thought it an appropriate moment to celebrate all things avian by making birds the theme of this week's show. This is part of our ongoing exploration of the animal kingdom. If you have a particular favourite branch of the evolutionary tree or if there is a genus or species you are particularly keen on, do let us know and we will do our best to make it the subject of a future show.

PMB160: Musical Industry (American-Standard, Goodyear, Standard Oil, Barry Gray, Monroe Calculators, The Accountants, Keith Mansfield, The Mike Sammes Singers, Exxon Corp., Datassette, Network Music Ensemble) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:56:57

This is a reminder that The Corporation's annual presentation will be taking place very shortly. Please assemble in the Company Theatre (managers in the Grand Circle, everyone else in the stalls) where our Board of Directors will present this year's original stage musical outlining the ups and downs of the last 12 months and how we can all do better this year. There will also be a hilarious reference to Brian in marketing around the 34 minute mark. By the end of the show we hope you will all feel fired up and ready to rush back to your franchises to SELL SELL SELL!!!

PMB063: Punk’s Not Dead (The Wurzels, Tracy Thornton, Coconami, Bruce Graham, Boop Beep Beep Boop, The Swing Easy Orchestra) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:23

Chiefly inspired by the remarkable discovery of a whole album's worth of punk covers played on the steel drum(!), we decided it was time to dust off the ripped tartan trousers and attach chains of safety pins to our lab coats as we turn the whole show over to punk rock. Please rest assured, dear regular listener, that this is the Alternative History version of punk rock where one can quite happily use the music as a backdrop to the enjoyment of creamy stilton and several glasses of fortified wine.

PMB062: Fantastica (Russ Garcia, Spacedog, Jeroen Tel, Polysick, Gianni Rossi, Mr Chop, Noel Boggs, Barry Stoller) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:05:48

This week we pay tribute to one of the giants of space age bachelor pad music, Russ Garcia. Garcia had a very illustrious career as an arranger and orchestrator but he is probably best loved for his 1959 album Fantastica which was one of the first space-themed lounge records. As well as Russ Garcia we have releases new to Moonbase, most excitingly, a track from the brand new debut album from friend of the show, Sarah Angliss, and her band Spacedog. download the MP3 The Music 1. Jeroen Tel: Alternative Fuel from Maniacs of Noise (entry to competition at X’2004) 2. Mr. Chop: Breakthrough from Switched On 3. Russ Garcia: Volcanoes Of Mercury from Fantastica 4. Gianni Rossi: Free Wheelin’ from Star Vehicle (The Original Motion Picture Score) 5. Polysick: Nightwalk 6. Russ Garcia: Ba-Tu-Ca-Da from Carioca 7. Noel Boggs Quintet: Caravan from Magic Steel Guitar 8. Spacedog: Hypnotist from Juice For The Baby 9. Russell Garcia: Lost/Hallucinations from Atlantis: The Lost Continent (1961) – original Motion Picture Soundtrack 10. Barry Stoller: Condition Red Project Moonbase is listener supported.  PMB061: Bubble and Squeak (William Shatner, Little Roy, Oxykitten, Rufus Harley, Mrs Miller, Eric Winstone, The Ravens, Muzzy Marcellino) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:23:46

After gorging ourselves on some great music throughout 2011 we thought it seasonally appropriate to collect together some of the tracks which didn't make it into some of the shows last year but which are nevertheless great pieces of music.

PMB060: Gajan Kristnaskon (Booker T and the MGs, Georghe Zamfir, Sean O'Hagan, Tracy Thornton, Natalia Paruz, The Mistletoe Disco Band) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:58

Festive lunar greetings to all our listeners for this week's all-Christmas special! On this week's show we bring you a selection of well-known Christmas favourites played in some very unusual ways. We have a version of the Twelve Days of Christmas where partridges and gold rings are entirely absent and a version of Last Christmas which may cause you to rethink the oeuvre of Wham. We also have a rather lovely original Christmas song from Sean O'Hagan of the High Llamas.

PMB059: Electrickery (Bruce Haack, Raymond Scott, Wing, Pye Corner Audio with The Advisory Circle, Any Meecham, C-Jeff, Killer Watts) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:10:35

Make sure you're standing inside a Faraday Cage for this episode of Project Moonbase, dear listener as we bring you a show themed around the world of dangerously high-voltage electricity.

PMB058: Wind Up Toys (Plone, Toy, Vic Mars, Lullatone, Pascale Comelade, Pierre Bastien, Raymond Scott, Klangverstedet, Felix's Machines) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:38

The release of the rather lovely new album by Japanese duo Lullatone (Soundtracks for Everyday Adventures) prompted us to seek out a selection of tracks either made with or inspired by toy instruments, clockwork machines and circuit bent toys. By a spooky coincidence another brand new release also fits into this week's show rather well, that being an album by Felix Thorn who builds his own instruments using wooden piano mechanisms, springs, and solenoids to create what MC Zirconium describes as "Victorian Drum and Bass".

PMB057 Och Aye The Moon (Acapulco Brass, Roger Whittaker, Caribbean Session Musicians, Telly Savalas, Ivor Cutler, Ken Mullen, Tartan Brass) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:53:48

As you will know, dear listener, the Moonbase periodically detaches itself from its lunar moorings and hovers over various parts of Scotland. We therefore thought it was about time we played a selection of tracks inspired in some way by that great country. The seed of this idea was the purchase of a CD from a charity shop which has a most extraordinary title. A title which in fact prompts many questions to be posed in one's mind. All will become clear as you listen to this week's show.

PMB056: Whistle While You Yodel (Shlomo/Swingle Singers, Tex Morton, Slim Gaillard, Mary Schneider, Ronnie Ronalde, Whistler Wilson) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:07:58

Loyal listener Squig is to thank for suggesting this week’s theme which explores yodelling, whistling, beat-boxing, throat singing and many other novel uses of the human voice. It turns out there is a goldmine of extraordinary vocal recordings out there and we’ve found several artists who are new to us at the Moonbase but whose work we feel will be featuring heavily in future shows. If you have an idea for a theme for a future episode of the show, dear listener, please let us know. download the MP3 directly. The Music 1. Shlomo & The Swingle Singers: A Fifth of Beethoven from Beauty & the Beatbox 2. Toots Thielemans: Indian Nuts from The Whistler & His Guitar 3.  PMB055 Moon Moods – Trailer for PMB056 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:15

Due to a bit of a mix up in the laboratory, the wrong trailer was added to the end of PMB055 so here is the correct trailer. You may also have noticed that time ran backwards for a small period of time during the week. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

PMB055: Moon Moods (Dick Hyman, Modular, Art van Damme, Charles Trenet, William Shatner, Eden Ahbez, Les Baxter, Jean-Jacques Perrey/Dana Countryman) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:08:41

Somehow, dear listener, one of the themes we've neglected to cover until now is that of our dwelling place, yes - The Moon! To redress this embarrassing imbalance, the show this week is pure unadulterated moonliness, featuring the sounds of, amongst others, Siingapore pop, Argentinian retro-futurism, German pianism, French novelty singing and Norwegian chiptune.

PMB054 Stampede (Bill Cosby, The Kramford Look, Claude Denjean, Johnny Dankworth, Modular, Electronic Concept Orchestra, Edmundo Ros) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:08:51

Something of a musical miscellany on the show this week with more Lollywood from the latest release on Finders Keepers (Life is Dance), more from those fictitious French librarians, The Kramford Look and more from those Argentinian retro-futurists Modular. We also mark the sad passing of Paul Leka and Edmundo Ros and hear the sound of an IBM 7090.

PMB053: Halloween (Blakula, Peter Thomas, Bruce Haack, Focus Group, Mandingo, Tipsy, Ursula Bogner, The Shaggs) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:01:26

Prepare to be terrified to your very core, dear listener, as we bring you our Halloween Special. Be warned that every track on the show this week is likely to strike fear into the very depths of your soul - but hopefully will also induce a chuckle or two.
