We all know those special moments, riding in a car with your buddies, singing along to your favorite song. We all know the dawning horror that creeps into your brain as you realize there's a lyric coming up that you've always sang a certain way, but you know deep down 'your' lyrics are way off and possibly embarrassing. What do you do? Stop singing? Sing gibberish? We think you should sing that all time refrain "give me the Beach Boys and free my soul" at the top of your lungs like the proud lyric misinterpreter that you are. The classic misheard lyric, or "mondegreen" as certain snooty individuals would call it, is one of the most fun and psychologically interesting topics in music, and that's what ATTT is all about this week. Music encyclopedia Ryan Stockstad joins to put his punk cred to the test and reveal some of his favorite and possibly humiliating misheard lyrics and we take a look at some of the classic mondegreens in rock. On Friday, February 13th, 1970, our world got a little darker. That's the day Black Sabbath released their self-titled debut album and in the same swift motion spawned a genre of music that millions have come to worship as if the sound was forged by Satan himself. Heavy metal music in all of it's glory was unleashed that day, and the people rejoiced(yay). To get Ozzy and company to the point where such a thing was possible, it took dozens of bands over many years to dream up the sounds that would eventually become metal. Blues rock, garage rock, proto-punk, and psychedelia mixed with classical and fantasy tales to get them there. It's a new year. As soon as you're done being locked out of your job, it's time to roll up your sleeves and get to work! Here's a classic episode from way back in 2015. 2018 was a stressful year, to put it mildly. It seems like everybody's into crime these days. Our leaders and their cronies are unabashed criminals, and our most popular entertainment revolves around doing crimes or solving crimes. For those of us (relatively) law-abiding citizens, here's another bit of content that involves our two favorite things - music and true crime. From around 1974 to 1979, disco music ruled the pop charts, the rock charts (Rolling Stones' "Miss You", anyone), the soul charts, and of course the dance charts. For 5 years, all over the world lush string arrangements, insane studio rhythm sections, and hook-laden pop songs with virtually zero lyrical content intermingled with cocaine, sex, and wild fashion. Throughout it's history, disco was mostly known as a singles genre, masterminded by producers and studio wizardry. We thought it might be fun to spotlight the artists themselves, and count down the most iconic and revered groups and singers of the era. Some were flashes in the pan, some were long-lasting superstars, before and after disco's heyday. Ben is sort of a novice when it comes to disco, so he recruited actor and fellow aspiring music historian Marcello Lanfranchi, who not only lives and breathes disco today, he lived it firsthand back in it's golden era.
