Advice Goddess Radio: Amy Alkon/Dr. Bella DePaulo | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:02:00

Nationally syndicated advice columnist Amy Alkon's Advice Goddess Radio -- "Nerd Your Way To A Better Life!" with the best brains in science. It's every Sunday, 7-8pm Pacific, 10-11pm Eastern, with podcasts available afterward. Don't get depressed about being single on Valentine's Day! Listen to Dr. Bella DePaulo on why myths about how awful it is to be single are all wrong, and how being "single-ish" in attitude can help couples be happier.  Social psychologist DePaulo is the author of the terrific book "Singled Out: How Singles Are Stereotyped, Stigmatized, and Ignored, and Still Live Happily Ever After."   Buy her book at Amazon at this link: http://amzn.to/AsOVXa Follow her blog at Psychology Today: http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/living-single Next week on Advice Goddess Radio: Dr. Barry Schwartz, author of "The Paradox of Choice."

Advice Goddess Radio: Amy Alkon/Dr. Robin Stern | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:01:00

Advice Goddess Radio: "Nerd your way to a better life" with the best brains in research and therapy. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------   Ever had somebody keep telling you down is up and 2+2 is 5 until you break down and agree with them?    At first, you're all, "Naw, that's not how it is," but they keep at you and keep at you until you start to say "Maybe they're right..." against all your better judgment.    If you've had this experience -- and I think we've all had this experience -- you've experienced gaslighting, an insidious form of emotional abuse and manipulation. This week, my guest is Dr. Robin Stern, Ph.D., on her fantastic book "The Gaslight Effect," and the syndrome itself -- and how to stop it. I wrote about it in a column:  "In a relationship, writes Dr. Robin Stern in 'The Gaslight Effect,' you're being gaslighted when somebody relentlessly pressures you to believe the unbelievable and do what you know you shouldn't. Stern explains that the gaslighter "needs to be right in order to preserve his own sense of self and his sense of having power in the world," while the gaslightee allows him to bully away her sense of reality and self because she fears losing his love and approval."  Advice Goddess Radio: Amy Alkon/Dr. Gad Saad | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:04:00

THIS SHOW MOVED TO MONDAY NIGHT, JAN. 30, 7pm PT; 8pm ET Advice Goddess Radio: "Nerd Your Way To A Better Life" with the best brains in science. My guest this week is evolutionary psychologist Dr. Gad Saad, Professor of Marketing at Concordia University and one of the few studying consumer behavior, whom I've quoted in my column and blog, and whose work I follow with great interest. We'll be talking about our "consuming instincts"  -- which is also the title of his terrific and most recent book, "The Consuming Instinct: What Juicy Burgers, Ferraris, P0rnography, and Gift Giving Reveal About Human Nature." From Amazon: •What do all successful fast-food restaurants have in common? •Why do men's testosterone levels rise when they drive a Ferrari or a Porsche? •Why are women more likely to become compulsive shoppers and men more likely to become addicted to p0rnography? •How does the fashion industry play on our innate need to belong?   The answer to all of these intriguing questions is "the consuming instinct," the underlying evolutionary basis for most of our consumer behavior.   We'll also discuss what the research says about what seems to cause eating disorders, and perhaps suggest ways to avoid succumbing -- and separate what the evidence says from the ideology and myths.   Buy his book here: http://amzn.to/ySAV3w

Melted garlic butter! And backs it all up with really solid science. On this show, evolutionary sexpert Salmon will strip away misconceptions about the differences between men and women on the sexual frontier, in relationships, and business. I've quoted her work in my column and I always love hearing her give talks. She's fascinating, insightful and always entertaining.  More on Dr. Catherine Salmon, the books she's written, and the show at this link:  http://www.advicegoddess.com/archives/2012/01/20/advice_goddess_39.html

Advice Goddess Radio: Amy Alkon/Dr. Eades & Dr. Eades | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:05:00

It’s Advice Goddess Radio -- bringing you the best people from science…fascinating, fun professor and therapist guests who will nerd you out of your love, dating sex, and relationship problems.  Low-carb pioneers Dr. Michael Eades and Dr. Mary Dan Eades are my guests this week. They are two of the all-too-few out there who are behind evidence-based ways to eat -- dietary science as opposed to the "science" on which so many base their diets. See the incredible results here:  http://freetheanimal.com/2011/03/phd-med-school-biology-researcher-goes-paleo-racks-up-70-pound-weight-loss-gets-hot.html Mike's blog here: http://www.proteinpower.com/drmike/  These two have changed the lives and improved the health of more of my readers -- in absolutely incredible ways. People who read their books, like "Protein Power," typically end up losing weight...and with ease...like the pounds are stones falling off a truck. On the show, we'll talk about how to maintain a way of eating, and debunk a lot of widely held myths about diet -- myths many doctors still cling to.  Buy their book, Protein Power, here: http://amzn.to/xPNr9U

Advice Goddess Radio: Amy Alkon/Dr. John Marshall Townsend | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:02:00

It’s Advice Goddess Radio -- bringing you the best people from science…fascinating, fun professor and therapist guests who will nerd you out of your love, dating sex, and relationship problems.  High praise from a male listener for this show: "Last night's radio show was right on.  It was like the Professor had been taking notes at our seduction forum.  He actually gets it." Very interesting guest this week -- Syracuse anthropology professor Dr. John Marshall Townsend, author of the terrific book, "What Women Want--What Men Want: Why the sexes still see love & commitment so differently. We dug into the research (like the hilarious study Townsend did showing pictures of men and women in Burger King uniforms or fancy dress. Of course, men didn't care where the girl worked; just whether she was hot. Of course, the women went for the homely guy in the blazer and the Rolex over the hot guy in the BK uniform). And we discussed what the research -- including Townsend's latest study on casual sex -- says about how we should approach love, dating, sex and relationships.
