John McGeoch (1955 - 2004) John McGeoch has to be one of my favorite guitarist from the Post Punk era. He was born in Scotland and moved to London with his family in the early ‘70s. In 1977, he met Howard Devoto and formed his first band called Magazine. He’s also played on great records & songs by bands like Siouxsie & The Banshees, Public Image, Ltd., The Skids, Visage, and Generation X just to name a few. In 1996, Mojo Magazine named him in their list of “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” for his work on Siouxsie & The Banshees’ “Spellbound.” Many others have also name checked him as an enormous influence on them including Johnny Marr of The Smiths, Jonny Greewood of Radiohead, The Edge & Dave Navarro from Jane’s Addiction. I love what Siouxsie Sioux had to say about him: “John McGeoch was my favourite guitarist of all time. He was into sound in an almost abstract way. I loved the fact that I could say, "I want this to sound like a horse falling off a cliff”, and he would know exactly what I meant. He was easily, without a shadow of a doubt, the most creative guitarist the Banshees ever had.“ Often called the "post punk or new wave Jimmy Page"…one thing is certain, John McGeoch was in a league of his own. Palais Schaumburg After a recent trip to Berlin, I decided that today’s podcast would focus on the Neue Deutsche Welle, which essentially is the New German Wave. The term was first coined in 1979 by journalist Alfred Hilsberg, who wrote for Sounds and would later start one of the movement’s premier record labels, ZickZack. The movement started with a number of underground bands from Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hannover and Hagen playing music influenced by the British punk & new wave. As the bands developed they would quickly form a sound all their own and release some of the coolest indie records of the time. But, sadly the major label’s eventually came in and ruined the movement by signing up some of the top groups and making them “one-hit wonders.” By 1983, the NDW had virtually come to an end. The NDW can still be heard today as an influence on dance-punk and electro-rock. Cherry Red Records is a London-based record label that was formed in 1978 by Iain McNay and Richard Jones. This edition of Post Punk Radio is an exploration into some of the label’s finest output which occurred when A&R head Mike Alway was added to the fold. He signed many of the groups during the late 70s / early ‘80s and would help bring the label to international recognition with the release of one of its most acclaimed releases, a compilation called 'Pillows & Prayers’ in 1982. The album was #1 on the UK charts for 19 weeks and sold over 120,000 copies, but more importantly it introduced the world to the some of the lesser know post-punk bands of the day. Today’s podcast was inspired by the BBC4 documentary Synth Britannia, which tells the story of a group of post-punk musicians from Britian who take the synthesizer from experimentation to pop stardom.
