Christian Meets World show

Christian Meets World

Summary: Christian Meets World is a podcast that looks at how Christianity interfaces with the everyday. We all know about God, Jesus and the Bible, but how does that translate into action in the everyday? Is there a Christian approach to how to vote in elections? How does a Christian deal with questions like abortion and euthanasia? Is there a Christian postion on taxation or economic policy? How should Christians deal with aspects of secular culture? Jason Rennie sets out to explore all these sorts of questions in Christian Meets World, looking into areas of economics, ethics, philosophy, history, apologetics, and anything else that seems to fit.

 CMW043: You’re not Luke Skywalker and this isn’t Star Wars | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 19:00

The subtitle for this episode is, "Tell me what you think, I don't care what you feel". It is partially an exploration of something that is a pet peeve of mine, but I think it also reflects a corruption of the culture and language that is reaching epidemic proportions today.  CMW042: Same-sex Marriage Legislation, some thoughts | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 25:50

There was a same-sex marriage amendment passed in North Carolina. Some people call it a "ban" but that is pretty clearly a lie. I thought i'd toss the idea around.  CMW041: Are atheists more compassionate? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 20:58

Saw an interesting article that had a study that was touted as showing that atheists are more compassionate when it comes to charitable giving. I'm not sure the study says what they think it says. The results are certainly interesting but probably not in the way those who will shill it think. Notes I originally saw the article mentioned over at Glenn Beck's The Blaze. And the original description can be found over at Live Science The Hoover Institute has a paper on the topic titled Religious Faith and Charitable Giving I would definitely recommend How to Lie with Statistics. Not perfectly on topic for this subject but it does teach you how to approach stats and claims with an appropriate degree of skepticism.  CMW040: What is your fair share of what someone else earns? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 27:04

"Since this is an era when many people are concerned about “fairness” and “social justice,” what is your “fair share” of what someone else has worked for?" - Thomas Sowell Notes I highly recommend you have a read of Thomas Sowell's regular column at Townhall.com. I have always found it to be an excellent read, especially his occasional random though columns An interesting read on the progressive taxation system in the US called Our Marxist Tax Code, which was also in part inspiration for this episode. If you have a look on Google you can find plenty about the whole Sandra Fluke spat Does anybody else agree with the observation that demanding government funded contraceptives as some sort of a right treats women as mere rutting animals enslaved to their sexual desire and unable to exercise self control an restraint? And should we really let such irrational people vote? You can find lots of different versions of Frederic Bastiat's The Law on Google. Pick the one you like best You can get Thomas Sowell's excellent book Dismantling America and other controversial Essays in both Paperback and Kindle editions. I can't recommend this highly enough.  CMW039: Doing Evil so Good will Result | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 27:19

Is it ok to do evil so that good will result? Can God do this? Does God do this? Notes Augustine of Hippo was an early Christian Philosopher. If you have never read Augustines Confessions then get it in Paperback or on Kindle, it is well worth it and a classic of Christian Literature.  CMW038: Some thoughts on Earth Hour | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 20:07

On tonight's show I have a bit of a rant against the pointless moral preening that is Earth Hour. Notes You can find knowledge about this idiocy over at The Earth Hour Website A good book on the topic is The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming (and Environmentalism) The good people over at Coyote Blog also look at these sorts of issues and deal with them from a libertarian perspective. The author of the site is committed to conservation but disputes the lunacy of the green left.  CMW036: 10 Questions for a moderate Christian, some thoughts | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 39:59

I was going to do something else tonight but I decided to cover a blog post I saw called "10 Questions for a moderate Christian". Seemed sort of interesting and the questions seemed common place enough. Notes @AmpAtheist posted the 10 Questions for a Moderate ChristianM at her blog. Feel free to have a go yourself just be polite. To address Question 1 Tekton has a really good collection of articles under the heading of Christian Variations. It looks at some of the differences. If you have never read Mere Christianity by C.S Lewis, stop reading this and go get a copy now. Tekton also has a great collection of articles on The Reliability of the New Testament. Tekton also has an excellent article on reliability called On the Textual Reliability of the New Testament If you would like a good introduction to Natural Law has a read of What We Can't Not Know: A Guide by J.Budziszewski You can also get a hold of A Summa of the Summa by Peter Kreeft that I mentioned unless you want to read the whole Summa Theologica by Thomas Aquinas himself. Questions 6 - 10 will be looked at in the next episode Ask your questions or share your feedback Comment on the shownotes Call (903) 231-2221 to leave a voicemail Email christianmeetsworld@gmail.com (audio files welcome) Please connect with me Subscribe, rate, and review Christian Meets World™ in iTunes Follow me on Twitter

CMW034: Is it ok to kill atheists for their organs? Some thoughts on Personhood Theory | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 26:12

Of course the answer is no, but if you buy into personhood theory like prochoicers and others then you are going to have a problem. Notes There is a discussion of what a Person is over at Wikipedia There are a number of articles on Personhood over at The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy I did an interview with Wesley J Smith on the Sci Phi Show Podcast I used to host. You can find Wesley's blog over a Secondhand Smoke I also did an interview with Peter Singer on The Sci Phi Show as well which you might find interesting if profoundly disturbing. I know I did. Science and Religion, are they Friends or Enemies? I think you might find my take on this surprising. Notes Here is an outline of Alvin Plantinga's Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism, it is well worth a look. You can read Alvin Pmatinga's whole paper in The Analytic Theist: An Alvin Plantinga Reader which I would highly recommend, also available for the Kindle Also here are a couple of links to get the interested started on Ancient Greek Philosophy and the Hindu concept of Maya Wikipedia has a couple of intro articles on The Philosophy of Science and The History of Science although for more detail check out The Plato Encyclopedia of Philosophy Ask your questions or share your feedback Comment on the shownotes Call (903) 231-2221 to leave a voicemail Email christianmeetsworld@gmail.com (audio files welcome) Please connect with me Subscribe, rate, and review Christian Meets World™ in iTunes Follow me on Twitter

CMW030: So if the Gospel was true what would it look like? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 22:47

This is a question I have posed to some skeptics from time to time. I think there is a more general application of the principle it embodies and I think answers to it can be revealing. Hope you enjoy and it gives you some food for thought. Oh and ... WooHoo ... show #30 Notes I couldn't find the article I wanted but this article called Harmonizing the Gospels: Principles, Pratice, and Examples by Tekton Apologetics Ministry does illustrate the idea nicely.
