SOMEONE SHOULD have warned First Lady Michelle Obama that appearing in a Twitter photo holding up a #BringBackOurGirls sign was a bad idea. It took about 15 minutes for the picture to be Photoshopped. Worse, it made the government of the United States look juvenile.

THE US and EU wasted no time in condemning the referendum in Crimea. According to reports from the area, nearly 80% of voters in the region turned out and over 90% voted in favor of seceding from Ukraine and rejoining Russia. The reaction of American and European leaders is ironic, considering that President Obama has defended the assassination of American citizens without due process, unrestricted NSA spying, and military action in support of the rights of Afghans, Iraqis, Libyans, and South Sudanese to determine their own political futures. We also discuss the still-missing Flight 370, Fred Phelps, Sr. of Westboro Baptist Church, and where the research for our presentations for the Orlando Prophecy Summit has taken us over the last month. HE JUST won’t go away. Those of us old enough to remember Yasser Arafat are probably somewhat surprised that the former leader of the Palestinian Authority, who died in 2004, is back in the news. The British medical journal Lancet published an article last week that supports a claim by Al Jazeera that Arafat may have been poisoned with the highly toxic radioactive isotope polonium-210. But wait — not so fast! It appears that the Lancet article doesn’t quite say what Al Jazeera said it said. Also, counter-terrorism experts were saying a year ago that researchers couldn’t have found enough 210Po to prove their case because it has a half-life of about 138 days — so any polonium that was found must have been planted. POPE FRANCIS will consecrate the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary tomorrow, October 13. A statue of Our Lady of Fatima, normally kept at the Chapel of Apparitions in Fatima, Portugal, is en route to Rome for the ceremony, which takes place on the 96th anniversary of the so-called Miracle of the Sun. Interestingly, the Pope has already consecrated his pontificate to Our Lady of Fatima, in a ceremony following mass on May 13 of this year, the 96th anniversary of the first apparition at Fatima. We don’t doubt people saw something at Fatima, but it wasn’t Mary. THE PARTNER of Guardian reporter Glenn Greenwald was detained at Heathrow Airport in London for nine hours Sunday under the UK’s Terrorism Act. Encrypted files from whistleblower Edward Snowden, on a portable computer drive intended for Greenwald, were among items confiscated from David Miranda. Comes word this afternoon that the White House had advance knowledge of Miranda’s detention — although, a spokesman said, “it’s not something we requested.” Meanwhile, we learn that Snowden began downloading NSA files a year earlier than previously reported, while he was an employee of computer maker Dell Inc. Also, the NSA awards North Carolina State a record grant to study data analysis; Verizon invited to participate in a $10 billion contract to provide cloud services to the government; and scientists call for papers on how to build a golem. SCIENTISTS HAVE announced plans to genetically modify the dangerous H7N9 virus to make it more lethal. They say it will help them understand how it could mutate in nature and trigger a catastrophic pandemic. Hmm. The case mortality rate for H7N9 so far is near 20%, or about four times more deadly than the 1918/19 Spanish Flu. What could possibly go wrong? Also: Archaeologists think they may have found a piece of the True Cross; Amish healer from Sharon’s old stomping grounds passes away; dolphins experience “unusual mortality event”; and more violence in the Sinai. SPIES HAVE dominated the news of late — the NSA spying scandal has revealed that the US government is basically tracking all our electronic communications. Today we discuss a couple of new revelations. First, CNN reports that the CIA had about three dozen operatives on the ground in Benghazi when the U.S. consulate was attacked last September. Why? They were apparently running guns, shipping missiles from Libya to the rebels in Syria. What could possibly go wrong? Second, a secretive joint venture of the NSA, CIA, IRS, FBI, and DEA called the SOD — Special Operations Division — is sending intercepted data to local law enforcement so police can arrest American citizens — who aren’t supposed to be targets of the NSA or CIA ever — for mundane crimes like selling drugs. BIOLOGISTS THIS week announced the discovery of a giant virus, up to ten times larger than most. The supersized virus, named Pandoravirus, is thought to be the biggest ever found. Interestingly, researchers say that “only 6% of its genes resembled genes seen before in other organisms on Earth.” Of course, one of the researchers added that means the virus — wait for it — may have come from another planet, such as Mars. Also: Massacre in Afghanistan linked to anti-malarial drug; Vatican offers indulgences to followers of the Pope’s tweets; massive solar eruption shoots past Earth; Google Glass hacked for spies; and the NSA inserts its own code into Android OS — meaning 3/4 of all smart phones. RADAR PARTS for a Soviet-era anti-aircraft missile system was found beneath bags of Cuban sugar on a North Korean ship in the Panama Canal. Questions abound: What’s it for? Who’s it for?
