I’m so pleased to share a chat I recently had with my friend, Dina Wakley Dina is a mixed-media artist and teacher. She loves everything about art: creating it, thinking about it, looking at it, and teaching it. She has been scrapbooking since 1995, stamping since 1996, and art journaling since 2004.  She believes in writing yourself down, expressing yourself, and making your mark on the world. As a Ranger Signature Designer, Dina designs a line of mixed-media art supplies that includes acrylic paints, mediums, brushes, rubber stamps, stencils, and more. Dina lives in Arizona with her husband and 3 boys (affectionately termed “the fellas”). With a love of teaching and traveling, Dina travels the world to teach and share her art passion with students on every continent. Finally, here is a quick video of Dina and me from one of the many times when she was a guest on Make it Artsy! Thanks for stopping by!  032: Skill Building | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:57

Today’s podcast is packed with fun art-related talk: my pottery obsession…er, class, the MFA Museum Council, and work by Yayoi Kusama and Cecilia Vicuña.  I will do a long post all about pottery class very soon.  But in the meantime, here is the instagram video I talk about on the podcast with the guy making the little pots.  It’s AMAZING (and if you don’t see it, here is a direct link). I also wanted to share two photos from the Yayoi Kusama installation (the first is inside the installation and the second is a photo of one of the “peepholes”): And this is the Cecilia Vicuña piece: And here is an historical quipu: You can read more about quipus here. Finally, here is a link to the Museum Council instagram account.  I posted a video of the Yayoi Kusama experience to that account: And a video of Cecilia Vicuña singing: (If you don’t see the two videos above, click through to my blog.)  082: Team Teaching with Nathalie Kalbach | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 51:00

Today’s podcast is about team teaching and features a conversation with Nathalie Kalbach.  Nathalie is a self-taught mixed media artist. She was born in Germany and lived most of her adult life in Hamburg before moving to the United States in September 2013. She now lives in Jersey City, NJ. “For the last decade I have been exploring the possibilities of creating dimension and texture by layering different materials and paint media. I have worked in art journals and on canvas, incorporating collage and found objects. For me, creating art is a dialogue between my skills and the supplies I use. It is not so much a battle as an ongoing attempt to work out the connections between ideas and techniques. In my mixed media canvases I emphasize urban subject matter, especially gentrification. I depict the vibrancy as well as the decay that I see in the cities around me from multiple viewpoints, represented by layering and tactile dimension.” On the podcast we discuss the more than decade long friendship Nathalie and I share… …and some thoughts on the benefits of team teaching, as that’s what we’ll be doing at the beginning of next month.  081: Listener Mail | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 54:47

Mom and I are doing our best to get back into the podcast swing of things.  We’ve been podcasting since 2012 (6 YEARS!!!) but we’re not great about frequency.  This will be just our sixth podcast in 2018.  (Note to self: put podcast in calendar as a “to do.”)  All of that said, today’s podcast is a particularly good one, because it’s a conversation with YOU! We chose a few of the awesome comments you’ve left to share and discuss. Mom and I would also love it if you would take a few minutes to take this four question survey about the podcast and why you do or don’t listen to it.  Should take you less than one minute to complete. // CLICK HERE FOR THE SURVEY  Thank you for your time! Finally, a quick reminder that I’ve got a bunch of teaching gigs coming up: September 22-23: I’ll be at The Ink Pad in NYC. Saturday is “Interesting Faces” where I’ll be sharing my techniques and ideas for creating truly unique faces.  It’s time to play beyond the edges of your imagination! Sunday is “Painted Paper Collage.”  In this class I’ll be sharing some of the techniques that I use over and over for projects big and small, including this fabulous collaged dress: October 13-14: ScanNCut for Artists in the Boston area I’m super excited to be teaching an in-person ScanNCut class.  This is the first one I’ve taught that is open to the public and it is focused on using the ScanNCut as an art tool to make stamps, stencils, screens, and more! November 2-4: co-teaching a 3-day class with Nat Kalbach in the UK Nat and I are both so psyched to take you through the process of creating mixed media collages from two different perspectives.  I think it’s going to be an amazing class! I hope to see you in class!  Thanks for stopping by! Subscribe to the podcast on iTunes here.  And if you like the podcast, please leave a review on iTunes!
