JESUS CHRIST said there would be a last generation. Is this generation the one? At his presentation for the Future Congress on Emerging Threats and Challenges, Rev. Noah Hutchings offered 40 signs related to the last generation -- all of which are in evidence right now. WHILE MOST of America fixates on the opening of presidential campaign season, the big news is quietly bubbling up north in the Arctic.  Russia is laying claim to about 380,000 square miles of the internationally owned Arctic to Russian control. At stake is an estimated one-quarter of all the world's untapped hydrocarbon reserves, abundant fisheries, and a freshly opened route that will cut nearly a third off the shipping time from Asia to Europe. A COMMON story from the Old Testament is the persistence of the high places, sites where the Jews worshiped the false gods of their neighbors -- Asherah and Baal, in particular. The same words were used about Muammar Qaddafi before NATO began bombing Libya (which was supposed to end in "days, not weeks", according to President Obama on March 20, 2011). STANDARD & POOR'S downgraded the debt of the United States to AA+ after the close of business Friday, a move that some analysts think could trigger the second dip of a recession.  Things are about to get really rocky. Another clue: A large New York bank has so many savers hoarding cash that it's now charging large depositors for savings accounts. Also: The U.S. Postal Service may default; Rick Perry's Dominionist allies; and SEAL Team 6 loses over 20 in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.
