Alt comedy in New York started in a second-floor theater in downtown New York. The co-founder of “Surf Reality” talks about starting the theater that nurtured many alt-comics. After talking to Robert Prichard about his work in “The Toxic Avenger” we started talking about his first love, “Surf Reality.” He talks about the theater and all the famous people who started at the famed theater. Jeff Ross, Brody Stevens, Rev Jen, Marc Maron and performance artist and R.O.T.O.R. star Margaret Trigg. From Wikipiedia: Surf Reality’s House of Urban Savages, also known asSurf Reality, was a 65 seat performance venue onManhattan‘s Lower East Side from 1993-2003. A laboratory for experimental performance of all kinds, Surf Reality was known for cutting edge comedy, performance art, classic burlesque, modern music, vaudeville and experimental theater. Surf Reality began as a video production company that produced a series called The Movie of the Month Club, including such works as Dick and Jane Drop Acid and Die and Manic A-Go-Go. The theater also served as the home for Faceboyz Open Mic, New York’s longest-running weekly open stage. Other acts that passed through Surf include The Upright Citizens Brigade, Todd Barry, Dave Chappelle, Maggie Estep, and Jonathan Ames. Surf Reality was noted as a venue for “alternative comedy, along with performance art and theater pieces” where “visitors have to be buzzed in through its scrap-metal door and climb up to a loftlike second-floor space” by The New York Times.   Robert Prichard, former proprietor of Surf Reality, produces various shows throughout Manhattan under the “Surf Reality Presents” brand. Most recently, Surf Reality produced 64 Paintings/64 Plays, a multimedia collaboration between playwright Timothy Braun, painter Jennilie Brewster, sound artist Tom Tenney, and animator Ashleigh Nankivell. The live performances were directed by Faceboy and were first worshopped atBowery Poetry Club in June, 2011. Robert Prichard produced and directed “64 A Vaudeville of The Mind” for the 2011 Re/Mixed Media Festival at the One Arm Red Theater in Brooklyn on Oct 22nd and again at the HERE Arts Center as part of their Spring Artists Lodge, March 15–17, 2012 in the Dorothy B. Williams Theater. Surf Reality has a long running re-occurring show called “Radical Vaudeville” that has been credited by Webster’s On Line Dictionary with reviving the concept of vaudeville in the 21st century.

At the Cannes Film Festival, Kaufman had read an article that said horror films were no longer popular, so Kaufman claims that he decided to produce his own version of the horror film. The film’s final outcome was less a bona fide horror film and more of a campy superhero-spoof with extreme violence embedded throughout. Bad puppets, old one liners, the hot foot and Arte Johnson – this film has it all… without the quality. Munchie really likes pizza.

The late Robin Williams in one of his most famous “funny help” roles. College Humor’s Hallie Cantor deconstructs the cross dressing stalker-com“Mrs. Doubtfire.”  Hallie wrote “8 Things That Still Bother Me About Mrs. Doubtfire.” The first thing about the movie is it’s impossible to find. No one streams it. You can buy the DVD on Amazon. The other thing is it’s more like a Brian De Palma film than a ha ha ha film. Robin Williams plays a man who dresses in disguise to steal time with his kids and keep an eye on his ex. SPOOKY! Someone made a horror movie trailer. But he didn’t have to do much.  

UCB got together to make an improvised movie .  “Wild Girls Gone” featured Matt Walsh, Amy Poehler, Matt Besser  and Ian Roberts . Not everyone is happy with Ben Affleck (Batman). An extra from the film “Argo” is pissed at Ben Affleck, and he can’t be silenced (Ok, he was when he had no lines… but that’s not the point here.  Tells Extra “Argo F**k Yourself” Anthony Terracciano was a featured extra in Ben Affleck’s Oscar-winning movie, “Argo” and did not get any credit. Do extras deserve credit and pay based on how long they are on camera? Is making a documentary really the best way to handle this? Adam Felber (NPR) returns to talk about the “In The Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale.”  (listen to the review and watch the whole movie)  The master director, Uwe Boll,  makes a film with very little dungeons and not one siege. Imagine “Lord of the Rings” with Jason Statham as Frodo Baggins, Burt Reynolds as the king and lots of fake boobs.  Matthew Lillard (FX’s “The Bridge” and “Bosch”) eats up scenery as Ray Liotta takes a nap.

Starlee Kine (“This American Life,” “Mystery Show” podcast) and Marilyn Ghigliotti (“Clerks”) talk “Garden State” in this lost episode. Being from NJ myself, I had to make sure this movie was treated properly. So I also got Eric “Danger” Nienhaus to join us. Eric is so Jersey, he says “yup” and chews with his like a cow. If you didn’t know, chewing like a cow is our state song. You got three people from New Jersey and one native Angelino discussing Zach Braff’s first (and thanks to the fans, not his last) motion picture. LOST EPISODE: This was recorded a couple of years ago when I started this podcast. I didn’t release it because I didn’t think it was professional enough. It wasn’t done the way I thought the way it should be. Eric called me recently and told me he just listened again and it was hilarious. OK. I lost the original, so I had to wait until I could get it from Eric. There’s also an additional hour of the show with Eric, Marilyn and myself. I’ll you want I’ll put it up on the iTunes for ya. Eric and Marilyn used to do a daily two-hour live podcast from their apartment. On “Retro Radio Live,” they would have on older celebrities. The type you would find at an autograph convention. They had a lot of guests like Loni Anderson, the guy from Star Trek, no not that one, the other one, Michael Madsen and Sterling Bowman. Who’s that? He’s the young heart-throb who played young Linus on “Lost.” We play music from his debut album. Check out the “Retro Radio Live!” website to see who you might be interested in hearing from.  Hugo (Age 6), Delia (Age 3 1/2) and their mom Susie Felber (Age ?) review “A Talking Cat!?!” & “Tommy the Cool Mule”. What more can I say? These kids are cute, opinionated and know a bad film when they see one. Too often, bad talent is pushed off on kids. As if kids don’t notice trash. Susie showed her kids these movies without ever telling her them the movies might not be good. The kids came to the conclusion that these films were trash. “A Talking Cat!?!” stars Eric Roberts as the title roll. But it sounds like they recorded it in his kitchen while he was making coffee. He sounds bored and hung over. I’m not even sure he knew what he was recording. It’s shot in and around a Hollywood Hills mansion that doubles for many different locations.

Boobs, bombs and bazookas, throw in a killer snake (puppet) and this movie has it all! It’s “Hard Ticket to Hawaii.” Joey La Penna, Grace Kladstrup and Jim Conroy join me to take apart this cult classic. Directed by Steven Soderbergh.  stars Matt Damon, Michael Douglas, Rob Lowe,  Scott Bakula , Debbie Reynolds, Tom Papa, Paul Riser, Dan Aykroyd And I give my quick review of Hangover 3. Hangover 3 is a sequel to Hangover 2. Hangover 2 was a remake of Hangover. Facts about “Behind the Candelabra” from IMDB.com: Originally announced in 2008. Filming had to be delayed after Michael Douglas began treatment for stage IV throat cancer in 2010. According to an interview with ‘Michael Douglas (I)’ at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, ‘Debbie Reynolds’, who plays Liberace‘s mother in this movie, was personally acquainted with the real Liberace and appeared as a guest on his variety show. Douglas also said that when he was younger, his father, Kirk Douglas, had a Palm Springs home down the street from one of Liberace’s homes, and although Michael Douglas never met Liberace, he did occasionally see him in the neighborhood. In a January 2013 interview with the New York Post, director Steven Soderbergh said that this movie was originally planned for a theatrical release but was ultimately produced by and aired on HBO instead because the story was “too gay” for Hollywood movie studios: “Nobody would make it, We went to everybody in town. They all said it was too gay. And this is after Brokeback Mountain, by the way, which is not as funny as this movie. I was stunned.
