In this podcast Victor Tsaran gives us a demonstration of Item Chooser, a tool that has been available in iOS since the release of version 5. Activated by a 2-fingered triple tap, Item Chooser displays an alphabetical list of all the items on your iDevice's screen. You can search or browse this list, and when selecting an item VoiceOver will tell you where on the screen it is located. Double-tap, and you will be taken to that item. Item Chooser is particularly useful with Safari, but works well with many other apps and also offers a quick and easy way to locate apps, folders and buttons.
In this podcast AnonyMouse gives us a walk-through and demonstration of AudioLabels, an iOS app that uses barcodes or QR codes to help the vision-impaired identify objects. AudioLabels works in two simple steps: 1. Point your camera towards a label with a barcode or a QR code. AudioLabels will automatically search many providers on the Internet for an available text description. If a description is found, AudioLabels will read it through VoiceOver. If no description is found, AudioLabels will ask you to enter a text or to record an audio description. 2. When you next point the camera towards that label, AudioLabels will read the description.
In this podcast AnonyMouse gives us a walk-through and demonstration of Scanner911 Police Radio Pro, an iOS app that was recently selected to be an AppleVis Pick of the Week. Scanner911 allows you to listen in to the radio transmissions of police, fire, EMS, ATC, and railroad crews. Although the app claims local and global coverage, it's worth noting that in many countries these radio broadcasts are restricted, so will not be available through this app. Widest coverage is likely to be in the US, Canada and Australia, and you should check to see what is available in your own country before purchasing this app. On a more positive note, the developers of Scanner911 have worked with VoiceOver users to make the app accessible.
In this podcast AnonyMouse gives us a walk-through and demonstration of HearPlanet, an iOS app that will turn your iDevice into an audio guidebook to the world.
