Introducing TextDetective: a New OCR App for the Vision-Impaired | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1304

In this podcast, AnonyMouse gives us a walk-through and demonstration of TextDetective, a new iOS OCR application that has been developed specifically for the sight-impaired. TextDetective finds and reads text in printed documents within seconds using your iPhone’s camera. The detected text can easily be read, edited, copied and pasted into documents, emails or other apps. It even stores all the scanned text in a history, which allows you to refer to it later. Every step is accessible. TextDetective works best with the clean and crisp text you find in documents, and at a distance of about the length of a forearm. You can use it wherever you go, and you don’t need to worry about network coverage. The app is optimized for iPhone 4S, but can be used with iPhone 4 and iPod touch. If you want to use Text Detective on an iPad, please be aware that the camera position is different to the one on the iPhone / iPod, which might require additional practice to align the camera lens and align the text. You can read the early impressions of several other TextDetective users on the AppleVis website. TextDetective is available for $1.99 from the iTunes App Store.

AppleVis Extra: Our Live Chat Session for Braille Users | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2534

This podcast features a recording of the live chat session that took place on Zello on 12 July 2012. This was a scheduled session on the AppleVis channel, and was devoted to the topic of using Braille displays with iOS and Mac. Co-hosted by AnonyMouse and Scott, the session was attended by approximately 30 Braille users. Topics were wide-ranging, and we decided to record and share the discussion as a podcast because we felt that it would be interesting and useful to other Braille users who weren't able to attend. Please bear in mind that this is not a studio-quality recording, and the audio quality suffers in places from the technical limitations that are inherent to any real-time chat service. Despite this, we hope that you will agree that it was worth sharing.
