When it comes to choosing the best defensive firearms we need to spend some time working to understand why we make the choices that we make so that we can make the best decisions.  Too often our choices are based on poor advise, misunderstanding, misallocation of resources, history or tradition.  Instead, we need to base our decision off of sound information.  After all we are making a high stakes decision when we talk about defensive firearms.         Admin: Sponsor of the Day: Templar Custom Arms   Second Amendment Foundation NRA Join your state organization (e-mail me a link to your org and I will list them here) Buckeye Firearms Association Ohioans for Concealed Carry Virginia Citizens Defense League Quality Considerations for Choosing the Best Defensive Firearm What we need to focus on is basing our decisions on our reality. We must consider: Our context Science Empirical Evidence Logic and Reasoning When it comes to Defensive firearms the handgun has it’s advantages and disadvantages just like any other platform and we must carefully consider both sides as we work to determine if the best home defense tool is the handgun. Advantages of Defensive Handguns Size Portable Easy to secure Easy to use Recoil is manageable Capacity is relatively high Readily available Reliable versions are available Disadvantages of Defensive Handguns Less tissue damage per round than other systems Precision shots take more time and effort to make We need to make sure that when we select defensive tools we are choosing the best tools.  Our life may depend on the choice so when you are looking at a firearm for home defense think carefully about your choice and be sure to choose the best self-defense firearm for you.  0325 – Expanding our Fight for Second Amendment Rights | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:22:09

Today's show might be one of the more important podcasts I have ever recorded. as many of you know, our Second Amendment Rights are under attack and I must say that I have never been more concerned about our rights than I am today. In what seems to be a perfect storm, anti-gun politicians and activists are feeling more bold and empowered than ever before and when that fact is coupled with the understandable complacency of today's gun owner, I see a serious threat on the horizon. Today we will take a look at that threat and some no-nonsense steps we can take to win the fight.

0324 – American Second Amendment Rights Under Fire | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:42:10

How quickly the tide can turn. 10 days ago if you would have suggested that an Assault Weapons Ban could actually pass into law, I would have laughed. Yes, I know it was going to be pushed for in Obama's second term, but I didn't see it as a true possibility. Today, for the first time in a long time, I am concerned. If you are interested in your Second Amendment Rights, you may have cause to be worried too. Today we will take a look at gun rights under fire.

 0322 – The Making of a Gun Frenzy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:28:27

A series of tragic events including the recent mass murder at Sandy Hook has sparked an atmosphere similar to the time leading up to and post 2008 election when we found ourselves in a serious shortage of ammunition and a long wait for "assault weapons."

0321 Understanding The Mass Murders at Sandy Hook Elementary School | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:49:05

I rarely focus my shows content on specific events, however, there are times when events are so overwhelming and the implications are so broad that they cannot be ignored. The tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary that took place on Friday, December 14 is one of those events. As uncomfortable, difficult and distressing as it may be to look at the situation from a critical standpoint, we must or we as a society will continue to make the same terrible mistakes that lead up to and result in tragedies like this.

0320 – An Interview with Alessandro Padovani of Safer Faster Defense | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:54:05

Most folks that I know and spend time with are interested in self-defense to some level. As a result these people carry gear that they believe will help to keep themselves safer. Almost without exception a knife is part of that gear. Knives are handy tools both from a utility standpoint and in terms of self-defense. Yet most people have spent little to no time training to use a knife as a defensive weapon. Today at Ohio Krav Maga in Hilliard a group of peple worked to remedy that situation by training with Alessandro Padovani of Safe Faster Defense. We asked Ale to take a few minutes to sit down with us and talk about preparing to carry a knife as a defensive tool.

0319 – An Interview with Mike Brown Designer of the Adcor BEAR | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:29:24

When it comes to the AR-15 platform, I am a big fan of the DI guns. The AR has a reputation of being a finicky and dirty rifle that at times can be truthful but is often overblown. So with very few exceptions when folks ask me my opinion about the AR I talk about DI. As with anything else, there are exceptions. Today we are going to hear about an exception. The Adcor Defense BEAR. The BEAR's designer Mike Brown is going to talk to us about Adcor, AR-15's, Pistons, the BEAR and the depth that his rifle and Adcor bring to the table.

0318 – Interview with Wade Stevens of TerraLUX Tactical Lights at NASGW 2012 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:21:01

One of the areas in tactical gear where tremendous progress has been made in the past few years is tactical lights. With advances in LED technology lights have gotten brighter, smaller, and much more feature rich. One of the problems that comes along with features, however, can be complexity. When we are involved in any type of emergency situation that requires the use of our light, we want the operation of that light to be both simple and intuitive. Different manufacturers have found different solutions to the simplicity problem to varying degrees of effectiveness. I sat down with Wade Stevens of TerraLUX to talk about thier lights and some innovative features that may work as a solution to the complexity issue.

0317 – Safety and Security Trends in our Schools | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:27:40

School shootings are a complex and challenging problem to solve. The reactionary position that LE, school administrators and students find themselves in seems to be a difficult scenario in which to succeed, however, the stakes are high. We value our children tremendously as we should and a the same time we often leave them in precariously exposed positions without the tools to deal with serious problems that can occur. Some news this month would seem to indicate that we are correcting course to a degree and working to regain ground in the battle to keep our children safe. Today we will talk about some of the issues that surround school violence.

0316 – An Interview with Personal Defense Network’s Jim Kopp at NASGW | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:16:08

The internet is an outstanding source of information. With a simple search we can find detailed information on just about any topic. We do have to be careful of how we choose our sources, however. It is pretty easy to find ourselves getting the wrong information if we don't take the time to vet what it is that we are reading. One of the ways to make sure that you are getting quality information is to seek out trusted, quality sources. The Personal Defense Network is one of those sources. Today we talk with Jim Kopp of PDN about information on the web, training, discounts and PDN.

 0315 – LaserLyte Training Aids NASGW Interview | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:24:11

Trigger control can be an issue for many shooters when it comes to precision and shooting. Although there can be a hyper-focus on precision in defensive shooting, it is an issue that needs to be addressed. Getting the hit when the target dictates precision based on size or distance is a complex motor skill that requires the defensive shooter to maintain proper sight alignment and sight picture while pressing the trigger to the rear. Any deviation in the sights during the trigger press results in deviation on the target. Too much deviation and the shot is a miss. Many people believe that the proper solution to this issue is dry fire practice and to some degree they are correct. The issue with dry firing, however, is that there is very little feedback to the shooter. Thousands of rounds of dry fire practice isn't going to help you if what you are doing is WRONG! Today we will take a look at how the products that LaserLyte produces can give you the quality feedback you need to help make your dry fire practice more efficient.

0314 – Trijicon RMR Ready for Defensive Pistols or Not? an Interview with Trijicon’s Nick at NASGW | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:18:57

So the question is: Where is that tipping point for dots on handguns? Has the battery life, the size of the optic, its reliability and durability reached a point where the balance tips to the advantage of speed and precision at distance? Are there other factors that we don't even understand yet that may make red dots problematic? These are the questions that I am interested in answering and of course, the way to do it is to jump in and study then procure and test an optic. The Trijicon RMR is one of the premire optics to mount on a handgun and Trijicon is who I am asking questions of. Click on play and listen in!
