0296 – Why I am investing in learning techniques for fighting in the Extreme Close Quarters Tactics Course | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:13:11

In general we can assume that violence is going to take place in close proximity between victim and perpetrator. This simple fact provides a complex situation for us to deal with when it comes to dealing with violence. Today we will take a look at why there isn't more training in this niche. I found some and we will talk about why I am jumping at the opportunity to get in on it.

 0295 – The Myth of the Do-All Self-Defense Handgun | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:27:41

I don't know about you, but I really enjoy firearms. For the past 21 years, I'm guessing there hasn't been a single day that has gone by that I haven't at least though about guns. Almost every day I have physical interaction with my defensive firearms, and as you know, I spend a lot of time training with, learning about and talking about my guns.

0294 – Safety at Home: 17 ways you can make your home a safer place! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:32:05

I am working hard to mix it up.  Today I really wanted to talk about something really high speed and gunny, but I was able to put a check on myself and  find some information that could very well be more important than or defensive firearms (collective gasp.)    There are few places where we spend as much time as we spend in our home.  It makes sense then that we spend some time thinking about home safety.  Spring is a great time to think about what needs to be done to keep you and your loved ones a bit safer and with warmer weather on the way, it is something we are doing something about here in NE Ohio. The checklist you find below is re printed from here. Sound the Alarm: Install smoke detectors on every floor of your home and carbon monoxide detectors near sleeping areas. If already installed, test them! Tip: Replace the batteries every daylight-saving time change. Avoid Overload: Check for overloaded extension cords – usage should not exceed the recommended wattage. Don’t Get Tippy: If young children are in the home, bookshelves and other furniture should be firmly secured with wall brackets to prevent tipping. Paint Safe: Check walls for loose paint. If re-painting, do so in a well-ventilated area and consider VOC-free paint. Childproof, Childproof, Childproof: Check your local library or online for complete lists of childproofing suggestions and see ourVirtual Home Safety Tour for more ideas. Areas of particular danger include outlets, appliances, electronics, stairs and windows. Cover Outlets: Cover all unused outlets to prevent children from sticking a finger in the socket. Watch Cord Placement: Extension cords should not be placed under rugs or heavy furniture, tacked up or coiled while in use. Get Grounded: All major appliances should be grounded. Be sure to check your ground fault circuit interrupters regularly. Plan Your Escape: Practice a fire escape plan with your family where you identify two exits for every room and what to do with young children. Give Your Air Heater Some Space: All air heaters should be placed at least three feet from beds, curtains or anything flammable. Keep Extinguishers Handy: Place all-purpose fire extinguishers in key locations in your home – the kitchen, bedroom and basement. Be sure to check expiration dates regularly and know how to use them safely. Create a Safe Exit: In addition to alarms and extinguishers, consider an escape ladder if your home has two floors. Keep emergency numbers and contacts readily available by the phone. Unplug Appliances: Unplug appliances and electronics when not in use and store them out of reach. Go New in the Nursery: Check that all painted cribs, bassinettes and high chairs were made after 1978 to avoid potential lead paint poisoning. Cool Your Jets: Set your water heater below 120 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid potential burns and to save energy. Put Away Medications: Take medications and medical supplies out of your purse, pockets and drawers, and put them in a cabinet with a child safety lock. Look for UL: The UL Mark appears on products that have been tested, verified and inspected for safety. Make sure to look for it to keep your holidays safe and bright.  0291 – Beach and Pool Safety Tips | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:26:27

I carry a gun with me when I go to the beach, but typically a violent lethal force situation is not my first concern. Don't get me wrong, we talk about when, not if and we should always be prepared, however, I feel like there are issues that have consequences that are just as severe and are much more likely to occur. I do my best to be ready for everything, but I start with events that have severe consequences that are likely to happen. Remember this is not some beach specific formula. This concept applies to us whatever we are doing and wherever we go.

0290 – Interview with Jason Silva of Students for Concealed Carry | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:26:17

These days it seems like just about everyone has a horse in the Campus Carry debate. I look at it from the progun side. I went to college, my wife went to college, someday my kids may go to college. There is no reason why each of us wouldn't want to be able to protect ourselves while we are working toward that higher education. Campus carry is a hot debate and Jason Silva of Students for Concealed Carry is going to talk with us about it today.

 0289 – Caracal F 9mm Striker Fired Pistol Range Trip with Stoppages | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:18:16

With all the excitement surrounding the Caracal i have made it a top priority to bring you quality information related to the pistol. Although it is not widely available, we have been able to secure a copy and I have been bit by bit exploring the pistol as time has allowed. This past weekend I took it on an impromptu range trip and was a bit disappointed in how it fared. It was probably my fault, but I'm still bummed.

 0288 – Four Factors that Can Restrict Your Self-Defense Training | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:31:10

I know that based on the demographics of the folks that listen to this podcast that our community is filled with folks that train more than the general population when it comes to dealing with violence. I also know from personal experience that I don't train as much as I want to. I dare to say it, but I don't train as much as I should. Yes, I train a lot. Yes, I train more than most people. My training and competency level have nothing to do with anyone else. It isn't about comparisons, it is about continual improvement. I am seeking to improve continually and so, I need to step back every once in a while and analyze what it is that is holding me back from doing what I should do and more importantly what I NEED to do.

0287 – Another MUST HAVE App to Increase Your Personal Safety | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:13:58

I don't feel like the app should take the place of a counter top SAME radio but is serves as a great supplement so get a hold of the NOAA Weather Radio App. Take a listen to today's podcast to see how you can use the NOAA app to stay safer.

0286 – If You are a Shooter, Check Your Carry-On Bags When You Travel | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:19:15

I end up traveling by air quite a bit both for pleasure and for business. This means that I end up taking guns onto airplane in my checked luggage quite often. Even when I don't take guns with me, I work to be pretty careful with my carry-on bags. There are all kinds of prohibited items that I use in the course of a day that could end up in my carry on if I'm not careful. Ammunition is one of those items. So, I check my bags.

0285 – Three Important Lessons to Take From Sanford, FL | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:42:19

We don't know all the details regarding the shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida, and I don't expect that we ever will. At the same time, however, there are some lessons that can be taken from this situation that are based on the facts that are clear to us. It would be wrong to not take some time to look for the lessons in this situation and how we can apply these lessons to our own life to make sure that we don't find ourselves in a quagmire like we see being played out in the media.

 0284 – Power Door Locks, Awareness, Safety, Security and Self-Defense | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:14:13

It stinks to have my truck in the shop. This LExus SUV doesn't tow quite as well as my 3/4 ton diesel Excursion and I have to say, the locks drive me nuts as well. Today we look at the way power door locks can enhance our safety and how excessive convenience can be an issue.
