This week, Glynn has been revisting the site, Days With My Father, he also discusses the Melbourne family portrait photographer who quit the industry because of the 'race to the bottom', camera firmware options for those who like to tweak, smartphone triggering options like Triggertrap and I/O Shutter, the Cactus Laser, Tamron's new SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD lens, and some more discussion of photobooks.  Shutters Inc – episode 222 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 43:48

This week, some e-mail from Richard Annable and Carl Hemmings. Richard's first one was regarding sorting through a big shoot. The guys at Magic Lantern have managed to pull RAW video straight out of a Canon 5Dmk3. However, it turns out my comments on the podcast were not entirely accurate regarding resolution. They have been able to achieve 2880x1320 (2.5k resolution) pixels. Link #1 Link #2 This week saw the release of Canon's new EF 200–400mm f/4L IS 1.4X lens. Richard Ingram chimed in on the issue of war/journalism photographers and where they draw the line between a) capturing the moment, and b) lending a hand. For Nikon users, digicamcontrol have just released a smartphone app (in iOS and Android flavours) to allow remote shutter release of your Nikon DSLR from your phone. Where Google used to offer you 10GB of storage for GMail and 5GB for Drive and G+ photos, they now offer a combined 15GB of storage for everything, so you can use the space however you like. Glynn has been looking into the "orphan images" issues we discussed a couple of weeks ago. Turns out, Canada has been doing this since 1990. The Big Photo Show in LA was held recently. A staggering 94% of registered attendees actually turned up! Check out this video of Chris Hadfield on taking photos from the ISS, and welcome to the mirrrorless party!  Shutters Inc – episode 221 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:04:30

This week, Glynn is paying the price for trying to relive his glory days, he's also running a competition this month at CPW, we asked what gear you are lusting after, which led to a discussion about David Oakley's latest acquisition, a Sigma 120-300mm/f2.8 lens, which would be on MY list if it was only available in a Sony mount(!), check out this great series of videos from George Eastman House on the history of photographic development techniques, Lightroom is coming to an iPad near you, according to Tom Hogarty at Adobe, the big news of the week was Adobe's announcement of going subscription-only (no more boxed software), if you have questions about Creative Cloud, check this out, different Creative Commons licensing options for photographers, why you should definitely keep shooting personal projects, and we'd like to know what technique do you wish you knew (or knew better) in Photoshop?  Shutters Inc – episode 220 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:05:06

This week, Glynn enjoyed watching a couple of 5 year olds do a photoshoot, Rakesh Shah introduced us to the idea of Geo-fencing, The Sydney Photographer's Meetup group will be doing Meetup #27 on Saturday 1st June from around 17:30-21:00. We discuss focus issues at wide apertures, From the Facebook Q+A, Susan Menis is missing images from her memory card and was looking for assistance, David Clark wanted advice on flash for small group portraiture (which led Glynn to mention the Pocketbox set from Westcott/Erin Manning), and Liam Walsh wanted to know how to identify the sweet spot of your lens. Liam, check out Cambridge in Colour... they have some awesome technical writings there which might shine some light on the subject for you... see what I did there? :) Bruce does an awful job of describing a workflow for Lightroom culling, (update: Where I went wrong was setting the 'sort order', when what I should have done was to set the view filter to 'attribute' and choose only to view 'picked' images), Glynn pranked us with his Ilford black and white CF cards, The U.K. Government passed the Instagram Act, which should be a concern to our English listeners, and we finish the podcast with a minute of silence to honour the announcement this week that Hasselblad are calling it quits for their 503 medium format film camera.  Shutters Inc – episode 219 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:03:10

This week, a post-shoot discussion of the weekend trip out to Trundle, Glynn ran a Natural Light Workshop through the week which yielded more than he normally bargains for, the Flect D.I.Y. window-reflection-eliminator, the forthcoming Sigma 18-35/f1.8 zoom lens, the X-rite colour challenge, the Australian Story episode, "Proof of Life", Glynn will be MC-ing a Digital Playground session or two at Vivid in Sydney, how the paparazzi feel when the cameras are pointed at them, and striking the balance between your photography and your family.  Shutters Inc – episode 218 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:19

This week, Skype issues led to us having to record wth Glynn on his mobile phone. Glynn is VERY happy with his Mosaic photobook, and would order more of them if it weren't for the horrendous cost of international shipping (the boon of the Australian consumer!). During the week, I saw a funny thread on the Light Stalking page on Facebook regarding what should be the appropriate collective noun for photographers, Following on from last week's soft launch, we have continued the idea of having questions posed to us via the Shutters Inc Facebook page while we're actually recording. This week, we had 3 questions from Richard Ingram, concerning quoting for commercial jobs, quoting for wedding work, and the conundrum of choosing a business name. Keen to hear your thoughts on this method of Q+A. Is it worth pursuing, or does the 6 day turnaround kill its usefullness (given that we record on Tuesday night and the podcast goes live on Sunday)? This week saw the announcing of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize winners, with the category of "Feature photography" going to a Javier Manzano image of two Syrian soldiers. Glynn thought some of the categories for the prizes demanded a "Witty Photography Category" competition. Give us your suggestions! We ponder the quesiton of why DSLR’s can't give us shutter speeds slower than 30 seconds? How hard could it be to have options for 1min, 2min, 4min, 8min and so forth right out to an hour? And finally, the growing move toward brides and grooms asking for a social media blackout on their wedding day. Glynn and I are in agreement on this... we think it's a great idea! And btw, has anyone else noticed the weirdness currently going on with Facebook's displaying of comments? Look at the following image, and check out the time stamps. The time stamps are actually representative of the times each comment was made, but what is with the ORDER???? Looks like Neo broke the Matrix again!   Comments will be closed after 30 days.  Shutters Inc – episode 217 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 49:23

This week, I liked a real simple, 'down-on'the-farm' approach to keeping the rain off your camera, I also remembered another of my favourite photography apps, The Photographer’s Ephemeris (iOS, Android, Windows and Mac), Glynn was impressed and disturbed by the photojournalism series “Syria in Ruins”, 2000 photographic studios shut down in the U.S. this week, Glynn and Mike Hollman share some tips on getting the best from your memory cards, like: format them IN your camera, only use each card in ONE camera body, keep cards in their plastic boxes when not in a camera, don’t use cheap card readers, and don't delete images in-camera Glynn discovered, forgot and then remembered the site Stolen Camera Finder, and Erin King asked for our thoughts on a rather unfortunate situation her sister and brother-in-law have found themselves in. ** Last minute update ** Swung by my local Bunnings yesterday and they did in fact have a huge collection of the Craftright cases Glynn mentioned last week, so I picked up the 46cm (medium) one. $40 well spent, I say! You may not be able to see in full detail, but I've kitted it out to hold: 3x Yongnuo flashes 3x plastic flash base plates 1x Minolta hotshoe adaptor 1x Flashwave trigger 2x Flashwave receivers 4x ball head lightstand attachments 2x umbrella stand heads 1x pocket for miscellaneous doo-dads (like speedstraps)   Comments will be closed after 30 days.  Shutters Inc – episode 216 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:41

This week, Glynn is heading out into the wild with his 18 MILLION candle-power torch to fry a few landscapes, Bruce is very impressed with the just-announced Tascam DR-60D audio interface for video-capable DSLR's, Richard Annable commented on the "post-wedding image count" from a couple of weeks ago, Glynn saw some great "looks-like-a-Pelican-case-but-isn't" foam-lined Craftright gear cases at Bunnings, There were some great April Fools Day jokes like the Canon 7D-L for left-handed users, and the new project from Google... Google Nose, We talk about the coming wave of "wearable computers/cameras" like Google Glass and what this will mean for privacy in the future, Glynn's Mosaic photobook arrived within a week (!!), but unfortunately he wasn't home when the courier delivered it, so a full report next week, The amazing portfolio of photos taken from the top of the Great Pyramid outside of Cairo, by Russian photographer, Vitaly Raskalov (link 1) (link 2) (check out both links as they each have different images), Glynn's Good Friday CPW workshop, Facebook app allows your friends to take your images FROM Facebook and use them to create coffee cups, mousemats etc, And it turns out that James Nachtwey, the anti-war photographer mentioned just last week will be doing a live presentation as part of the Vivid Festival in Sydney on June 9th. Also, last week's mp3 file got erroneously posted without any metadata. You probably noticed that! I have since uploaded a new version of the file WITH the metadata embedded, so if you're the type of person who likes complete metadata, feel free to manually download that episode again and replace your original version.  Shutters Inc – episode 215 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:02:07

This week, a little bit of Springsteen-talk following last week's 3 Sydney concerts, Glynn is still culling his hard drive and in the process, decided to create a photobook using an iOS app called Mosaic, Glynn talks about some apps that can come in useful when travelling like Kayak (iOS, Android, Windows, Kindle), XE Currency converter (iOS, Android, Blackberry and Windows), Trey Ratcliffe's Stuck on Earth (iOS only), Sunseeker (iOS only), Moonseeker (iOS and Android), Geotagr (iOS only), Longtime (iOS only), Pocketscout (iOS now, Android coming soon), and Picfari (iOS only). One of Bruce's favourite apps is PHOforPHO (Android only) which contains not just an exposure calculator but a whole suite of photography tools. What are your favourite phone-based photography apps? The CPW Casting Call shoot is coming up on the weekend of the 5th-7th April. Also, Glynn mentions Chinese photographer Liu Xia, under house arrest, but whose photos have been smuggled out of the country and soon to be on display in the U.S. Carl Hemmings sent me this link to Scott Kelby's thoughts on his Kata bag, Richard Annable sent us this link to the doco about war photographer, James Nachtwey, and I came across the Nero trigger which looks very interesting.  Shutters Inc – episode 214 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:01:49

This week, Bruce is off to not one, but three Bruce Springsteen concerts, but sadly, sans camera. The Trundle trip in April has had to be severely curtailed in scope due to lack of numbers. Nefarious going's on in the camera-retail space in Melbourne. Creative Photo Workshops is about to have a major website overhaul. Glynn was impressed with the "Fake it til you make it" display on NPR's website. Which begs the question.... can composition also be classed as a form of manipulation? Randy Blythe (singer for metal band "Lamb of God") is looking for his photographic "style". Does he HAVE to? The ever-popular scenario of companies wanting to use your images in return for 'exposure' instead of money. Plus, in honour of this week's goings-on in Cyprus, we're offering this epsiode at a 10% discount! :) Comments will be closed after 30 days. Love the podcast?  Shutters Inc – episode 213 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 58:57

This week, in honour of the Facebook page reaching 100 'likers', we're giving you this episode FREE! :) Les Walkling joins us for a chat about both monitor and printer profiles. Les' technical papers on Monitor Profiling and Softproofing are at: http://www.leswalkling.com/words/the-theory-of-practice/ http://www.leswalkling.com/texts/softproofing.pdf There are many other papers and information here. Also, the ND5 The Story so Far tour is in Sydney on Sunday 7th April at the Maritime Museum Theatre in Darling Harbour. Plus, Les will be speaking at the following PMA Photoshop Seminars and Workshops: Sydney: Friday 15 March - Evening Seminar Saturday 16 March - One Day Workshop Melbourne: Friday 22 March - Evening Seminar Saturday 23 March - One Day Workshop Perth: Friday 25 March - Evening Seminar Saturday 26 March - One Day Workshop Glynn advised that the one lens he would choose if he was stranded on a desert island  was his 18-270 Tamron AND his 90mm (I don't think he gets the idea of which ONE lens would you take!). If you'd like to pick up some photography work in Banff, Canada during the middle of 2013, contact Lisa Otto at Banff photography and tell her Glynn sent ya! Glynn also mention the Digital Playground Show (part of the Vivid Festival) coming up soon in Sydney. Make the most of your modern digital lifestyle by developing your passion for photography. From the unique vantage point of the Overseas Passenger Terminal with stunning views out to the Sydney Harbour foreshore and the Sydney Opera House, there will be exciting exhibits, talks, workshops and pop-up events sponsored by top technology and lifestyle brands throughout the weekend of May 31-June 2. We also spoke more about my forthcoming trip to Borneo. Being unsure of how much access I'll have to AC power, Glynn suggested looking into backpack-mounted solar panels for trickle charging throughout the day. Glynn also shared some tips to getting your roller-style camera bag onto the plane with a minimum of fuss. Ad finally, National Geographic is celebrating their 125th anniversary with some photos from the archives,

 Shutters Inc – episode 212 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 53:24

This week, I discovered why I had not been getting the results from my 10 stop filter that I thought I should have been getting. Seems the culprit is light leakage from not using the correct holder (Cokin) for the filter (Hi-Tech). D'oh! Glynn brought to our attention to the emerging research into Binary Pixel Technology which promises the concept of 'in-camera ultra-high-dynamic-range' from one image. I am hesitantly optimistic. Also, there's a new Polaroid camera coming from Socialmatic. Images will print from the camera body (like all previous Polaroid cameras), as well as upload to Instagram (as long as you are somewhere where there is an interwebs connection, of course!). Glynn has been watching 'Witness' on Foxtel - a documentary series on war photographers (produced by HBO). We'd like to know what other photography docos have you seen? Let us know here in the comments, or on the Facebook page (which if you haven't yet 'liked', you really should!). Glynn also found and really likes the Lens blog from NYTimes. Then, with Glynn spontaneously deciding to take himself off to India for a personal 5 day phototour, and Bruce and family headed for Borneo in June, we got onto talking about passports, expiry dates, and camera/gear protection for shooting in hot, wet, tropical climates. Glynn likes the Storm Jacket for his wet weather outings.

 Shutters Inc – episode 211 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:21

This week, we alert those who aren't already aware to our new Shutters Inc Podcast Facebook page, Glynn has been checking out various photo sharing sites (Flickr, 500px, 1x), we talk a bit more about the subject of what to do with all those lost photographic gems on your hard drives, instagram, aspect ratios (make sure you check out this week's best internet meme if you haven't already seen it!), and we'd really like you to submit (to the Facebook page) your best 'square cropped' image and tell us why you like it cropped into a 1x1 aspect ratio.

 Shutters Inc – episode 210 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 32:54

Yeah baby... Shutters Inc is back! This week, Glynn Lavender from Creative Photo Workshops comes on board as co-host. I'm very excited to have Glynn involved and am confident that he will bring a wealth of experience to the podcast. In this first "dip our toes in the water" episode, we just have a casual chat, discussing such topics as: my massive roadtrip at Christmas, the Big Photo Show (happening soon in Los Angeles), the Sydney Photographer's Meetup weekend photo tour coming up in April, CPW's April weekend photo workshop, Eric Curry light-painter extrordinaire... and more! It's good to be back!

Testing, testing, is this thing on? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 8
