Surfing somewhere cold has been forever on my bucket list... putting on that 5mm wetsuit with a hood, gloves and boots was seriously the coolest thing ever. You kinda have to dig deep to get psyched to go surf because it’s that cold, or way colder than I’m used to surfing in Sydney. Lots of coffee, music and air punches to warm the body up. We didn’t really get stand up tubes, but fuck I had fun! It’s a scorcher during the late summer of 2017 and Cape Town is busy experiencing one of the worst droughts in the city’s history. Deen Hill and Dale Staples do what any eco-conscious surfer not wanting to blast the AC would do, jump into the Atlantic and shred it up. Filmed by Calvin Thompson.

The swell was almost too big for the reef, turning a perfect right into a thick double-up monster. The few surfers game enough to put themselves under the lip were rewarded with some amazing tubes. Laurie Towner was one of these guys and got some great waves until he was flogged at the bottom of a huge double-up. The result was a few separated ribs but Laurie was still stoked! Today was a day that will go down in GromSearch history – 16 of the world’s best junior surfers battling it out in solid and powerful four-to-six-foot Manu Bay, posting 10-point rides and showing the world what the future of surfing looks like.
