Don't forget to stop by NorwegianClass101.com for more great Norwegian Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Bryggen—Bergen Harbor Area The old wharf of the Norwegian city of Bergen, the Bryggen, reminds us of the strength and pride of Norway's maritime trade. Also known as Tyskebryggen or the German Wharf, it has been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site since 1979. It is built on the eastern coast of a fjord coming into the city of Bergen. Bryggen features commercial architecture that dates from the fifteenth through eighteenth centuries. Once a hub of activity for merchants, Bryggen is the oldest part of Bergen, founded in 1070 by King Olav the Peaceful. Its development was influenced by a Hanseatic League, an alliance of trading cities and merchant guilds, from 1360 onwards, and this helped transform Bryggen into an important trade center. The buildings along the wharf were primarily warehouses for storing fish and cereals from Europe. Today the structures that remain are a tourist attraction that also features gift and souvenir shops, museums, and restaurants. Of the original constructions, only sixty-two remain today. Fires have ravaged the buildings of Bryggen over the years; as late as 1955, one-third of Bryggen was destroyed in a fire. After that, Bergen committed itself to restoring and protecting the remaining buildings. During the process, excavations and studies were carried out, which helped reconstruct the lives of those who had lived there over the last eight hundred years. However, the most devastating fires to affect Bryggen were those of 1476 and 1702. It has been estimated that about one-quarter of the remaining buildings date from after 1702, with the rest dating from earlier centuries. There are even some cellars that date from the 1400s. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101!  Advanced Audio Blog #19 - Top 10 Norwegian Holidays: Olsok Eve Festival | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:28

Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Don't forget to stop by NorwegianClass101.com for more great Norwegian Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Olsokfestivalen Olsokfestivalen holdes hver 29. juli i Norge. ----Formal English---- Olsok Eve Festival The Olsok Eve Festival is held every July twenty-ninth in Norway. Also known as St. Olaf's Vigil, it honors King Olaf, the nation's patron saint, who is credited with bringing Christianity into the country. In the United States, this day is known as Norway Day and celebrated throughout the country by Norwegian Americans. The date of the holiday can be traced to the day King Olaf died in 1030. The king actually had a bloody reign, during which he plundered Christian churches on his travels. On one of these violent expeditions, he was actually converted to Christianity and then baptized. But it seems that King Olaf only knew how to do things violently, for upon his return to Norway, he killed anyone who resisted conversion to Christianity and led religious forays into other countries as well. Norwegians typically celebrate the Olsok Eve Festival with bonfires, dances, music, and church services. They also stage reenactments of the battle in which King Olaf died and make walking pilgrimages to the Cathedral of Nidaros in Trondheim, the site of his burial and the old chapel erected in his honor. King Olaf ruled Norway until 1028, when he was exiled on account of his violent ways. Two years later he built an army and returned to his home country, only to die defending his Christian beliefs. Today, Norwegian Christians see him as a great defender of Christianity. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101!
