As compelling as it may be at times to linger in silence and open listening, our compassionate engagement with the world often moves us to speak, to respond. This talk explores part of the Buddha's Instructions to Rahula at Mango Stone, when the Buddha advises his young son to reflect on the effects of his words before, during and after speech and whether they lead to harm or benefit. Reflecting with curiosity on our own speech in this way leads to greater sensitivity in our interactions, as well as a deeper understanding of our own minds. Tuere Sala and Tim Geil, SIMS Guiding Teachers, personally invited the whole Sangha to attend the third annual Welcoming/Forgiveness Ceremony. We set aside time to appreciate SIMS for the refuge it has provided us over the years, to welcome anyone new to SIMS and re-unite with anyone who has felt distant from SIMS for any reason. Both Tuere and Tim offer reflections on forgiveness and a simple ceremony. Patterned after the forgiveness ceremony at the end of residential retreats, this evening acknowledges we may intentionally or unintentionally cause harm by our actions, and ask for forgiveness. This intentional release of accumulated hurts helps us step into each moment with a fresh beginning. This talk is also presented in video here: http://seattleinsight.org/Talks/Talk/TalkID/977
Wise speech depends on our view and intention, as well as our capacity to listen inwardly and outwardly. This talk explores Wise Listening as the first gesture of Wise Speech, and how we might practice listening in a way that allows us to let go of what no longer serves (renunciation), and cultivates openness towards ourselves and others (non-ill will, or kindness).
