Montreal Weekend Playlist

Salut, Internet! This is Greg, back from trekking across the world, ready to talk with Theo about things like wild animals in Calgary and the necessity of always carrying a tank top. But more importantly, we're also ready to talk about some killer shows happening during this lovely Summer weekend. Whether your idea of fun is sitting in the park, jumping into a mosh pit, or leaving the city entirely, there's enough happening over the next seven days to keep you happy. The icing on the cake? This week also features a live performance and exclusive new track by the incredible Michael Mooney.

With Osheaga rolling in this weekend and MEG Festival's explosive last leg, we've been pretty busy. There's still tons going on outside the festivals, so put your dancing shoes on, because it's going to be a wild ride.

Welcome back, folks. We've been mourning Jer's departure just as much as you have, but you know, life goes on. Theo, Amie and I are still here to bring you the best of the local music scene. This week, Just For Laughs and MEG are taking over, so get ready, it's party time!

It's my favorite time of the year, and coincidentally, one of the coolest summer music festival is starting next week. That's right, we're talking about MEG Montreal, the electro-pop-rock extravaganza that will be blowing through town from July 26 to August 5. Get ready for MEG showcases, a Piknic event, free outdoor concerts and fantastic shows all over the city night after night. Here's an audio teaser to give you an idea of this year's lineup.

It's a bittersweet podcast this week, there's no way around it. After 260 plus episodes, I'm signing off. It's been a good 6 year run and we've been through a lot since the show's earliest days. Since this is likely my last chance to say a proper goodbye, let me just say how much I've enjoyed watching Montreal's various music scenes grow and evolve during my time here and how fortunate I feel to have been part of a show that I hope, in some minuscule way, has helped contribute to this city's vibrant culture. This episode is my attempt to reflect on that experience musically, and to say thank you to all the artists, producers, labels and other kind folks who've made this show possible. Thanks to anyone who's ever listened to the show, recommended it to their friends, or cared enough to send us a comment. Luckily, I leave the show in excellent hands. We're fortunate here in Quebec. Given that La Fête Nationale and Canada Day can't get along, we're the beneficiaries of back-to-back long weekends. It feels like we just finished our last holiday podcast and now we're already onto another one. It's another busy week here in Montreal. From the Folk Fest on the Canal to Fringe Pop to the month-long celebration that is Suoni (including the eclectically cool Wyrd MTL showcase) to a visit from seminal acts like Mogwai and Radiohead, Amie and I find it basically impossible to keep this podcast under an hour and a half. We're just winding down from Mutek and already we've got to gear up for Les Francofolies de Montréal, Suoni Per Il Popolo, and a whole bunch of spring activities put on by Pop Montreal. Temperatures are rising around the city, literally and metaphorically. Controversial legislation (and questionable government and police behaviour) has driven thousands to the streets to lend their voices to the 100+ day long protest. As the mercury climbs, the student strikes show no signs of cooling. We're not sure whether the music on this week's show will soothe the savage beast or fan the flames of revolution, but we're sending it out there for your consideration, whatever side of the debate you're on. It's the Wednesday before Victoria Day and we can officially say that Festival season is underway in Montreal. This long weekend alone there's Montreal's punk focused Pouzzafest, the start of Piknic Electronik's 10th season and a brand new fest to add to the mix: The One Man Band Fest. The organizer of this last one, Jon Cohen, joins us this week as guest host to tell us about the 3 day affair of shows, workshops and more useful events for solo artists. And, lest we forget, there's also our own Midnight Poutine event going down: a Beastie Boys themed dance party tribute in honour of MCA (R.I.P. Adam Yauch). It's got a great line-up of DJs, it's co-organized by the always awesome Pop Montreal and all door proceeds go to the Canadian Cancer Society.
