Krissi Bucholtz, 20 (Surrey) is the Executive Director of the People's Foundation for Sierra Leone, an organization she founded in 2009 to provide at-risk youth from the West African country with an opportunity to attend university. On January 15, 2011, BCCIC met with Fara Shah and the Semiahmoo Secondary School's InterAct Club. The Semiahmoo InterAct Club (represented by Fara Shah, 17, Surrey) combines students' thirst for knowledge with their desire to help others, and mounts successful campaigns to alleviate injustices both locally and internationally, through work with ACCES Kenya and the local food bank. Elicia Withers, 16 (Kelowna) is active in the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society (KFS), where she connects with her Aboriginal community, volunteers as a youth leader, and lobbies the government on aboriginal youth rights. On January 15, 2011, BCCIC met with Anika Barlow to discuss her work in international development. Anika Barlow, 18 (Comox Valley) raised funds to put ten young people in Uganda through secondary school, and is teaching her peers in Canada about how much potential they have to impact world issues. In collaboration with Mennonite Central Committee, Food for the Hungry, CIDA, BC Council for International Cooperation and the University of the Fraser Valley. Three expert panelists present some hard-won lessons from their experiences of the successes and failures of implementing sustainable development initiatives within a context of violence, natural disaster, political unrest, etc. This is not a presentation about emergency aid, but rather the reconstruction and aftermath of building peace, security, infrastructure and capacity during or after a crisis. The panelists are from Mennonite Central Committee, Food for the Hungry Canada and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
