Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Joulu Suomessa Joulunaika alkaa Suomessa joulukuun ensimmäisestä sunnuntaista, joka tunnetaan nimellä ensimmäinen adventti. Joulukuun 13. päivä on Lucian päivä, jota juhlistetaan kynttilöin ja kynttiläseppelettä päässään kantavan nuoren neidon ympärille keskittyvin juhlallisuuksin. Tähän aikaan suomalaiset aloittavat joulukuusen haun ja lähettelevät toisilleen joulukortteja. Useimmat suomalaiset käyvät joulukirkossa ja suomalaisessa saunassa. On hyvin yleistä käydä läheisten vainajien hautausmaalla. Toinen suomalainen perinne on jakaa suuri kattilallinen puuroa, johon on kätketty manteli. ----Formal English---- Christmas in Finland The Christmas season starts in Finland on the first Sunday in December, which is known as the First Advent. December 13th marks St. Lucia's day, a holiday that is marked with candles and festivities centering around a young girl wearing a wreath of candles on her head. During this time, Finns begin looking for their Christmas tree and exchanging Christmas cards. Most Finns attend a Christmas mass and go to a Finnish sauna. It is also very common for them to visit the gravesites of their deceased loved ones. Another Finnish tradition is to share a large pot of porridge that has an almond hidden inside of it. Whoever ends up with the almond in their bowl sings a song. On Christmas Eve, dinner is served between five and seven. Finns typically eat ham, codfish, rutabaga, and other holiday fare. Christmas Eve is often marked with Christmas carol singing and the exchange of Christmas presents, often through a visit from their local Santa. Finns (at least those who believe in Santa) believe that he actually lives in the northern part of Finland, so he doesn't have to go far to deliver their presents. This is why so many homes have a personal visit from whoever their local Santa is. Even animals are remembered at Christmas in Finland. Some people hang special food items outside to be enjoyed by birds and other animals. Birds are especially honored in the rural parts of the country and get their own Christmas tree in the form of a sheaf of wheat hung outside. The holiday season ends officially thirteen days after Christmas. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Uudenvuodenpäivä Suomessa Uudenvuodenpäivää juhlitaan 1. tammikuuta gregoriaanisen kalenterin vuoden alkamisen kunniaksi. Suomessa sitä kutsutaan Uudenvuodenpäiväksi. Ruotsalainen nimi uudenvuodenpäivälle on Nyårsdagen. Kirkon kellojen soitua uuden vuoden alkamisen merkiksi järjestetään ilotulitus. Sään salliessa järjestetään myös ulkoilmajuhlia. Uudenvuoden aaton juhliin Suomessa kuuluu usein seisova pöytä, helmeilevää viiniä ja muita paikallisia juomia. Uudenvuodenpäivänä Suomen presidentti pitää puheen televisiossa. Kaupat ovat kiinni eikä useimpien ihmisten tarvitse mennä töihin. Yleensä ihmiset viettävät päivän toipuen uudenvuodenaaton juhlinnasta ja syömällä hyvän aterian. Suomeksi uudenvuoden toivotukset tehdään sanomalla "Hyvää Uuttavuotta." ----Formal English---- New Year's Day in Finland New Year's Day is celebrated on January 1, noting the beginning of the Gregorian calendar year. In Finland, New Year's Day is called Uudenvuodenpäivä. The Swedish name for New Year's Day is Nyårsdagen. New Year's Day is celebrated in Finland much as it is in other parts of the world, with most of the celebration actually taking place the night before, on New Year's Eve. It is an opportunity for lots of parties and merriment. There are parties at bars and clubs as well as private parties in people's homes. Just as Americans gather at Times Square on New Year's Eve and wait for the ball to drop, in Finland people gather at the Helsinki Cathedral to socialize, and at midnight, the church bells are rung. After the bells have rung to mark the beginning of the New Year, there are fireworks. Sometimes there are outdoor parties, if the weather permits. New Year's Eve parties in Finland often include large buffet-style meals, sparkling wine, and other local drinks. On New Year's Day, the President of Finland makes a speech on television. Stores are closed, and most people don't have to go to work. People generally spend the day recovering from the festivities of New Year's Eve and eating a good meal. To say Happy New Year in Finnish, you say "Hyvää Uuttavuotta." --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Petajavesi Old Church Petajevesi Old Church is located in the Finnish city of Petajavesi. UNESCO added the church to its World Heritage List in 1994. The organization ruled that it is a perfect representation of a Lutheran Scandinavian church because of how Gothic architecture was mixed with styles from the Renaissance. Built between the years of 1763 and 1765, the church is constructed entirely of wood. The clock tower was added in 1821. Originally, the church was built so that the locals could worship there instead of traveling long distances to Jamsa. The church's location on the peninsula between Lake Petajavesi and Lake Jamsa was selected because parishioners could get there via either boat or land. The church's floor plan is cruciform, with all four arms being about the same length with high vaults over them. Local craftsman created the interior as well, which was also crafted from wood. Most of the structure is original, although just one of the windows and doorways are original. The bell tower is the only part of the church that is painted a different color. Currently there is no settlement surrounding the old church because the nearest town is about a half mile away. The church began to decay in the late 1800s when it fell into disuse. However, this also meant that the church was largely preserved in its original form. In the early part of the 20th century, it was "rediscovered" and restoration efforts began to bring the building back to its former glory. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! Kokeneemmat vaeltajat saattavat suunnata kulkunsa mieluummin erämaan halki. Useimmat matkalaiset, jotka päättävät vaeltaa UKK Kansallispuistossa, aloittavat vaelluksensa jostakin kolmesta puistoalueella sijaitsevasta paikasta—Raja-Joosepista, Aittajärveltä tai Kiilopään tunturikeskuksesta. Useimmat reitit päättyvät Saariselän tunturille. Puistossa on useita autiotupia, jotka tarjoavat leposijoja pitemmillä vaelluksilla, erityisesti sateisena aikana. Vaelluksen lisäksi UKK Kansallispuisto on suosittu kanoottiurheilukohde. Puistossa on laaja jokien verkosto, jonka ansiosta puistossa voi liikkua kätevästi melomalla. Talvella puistossa harrastetaan enimmäkseen murtomaahiihtoa, erityisesti Saariselän lomakohteen läheisyydessä. Laaja erämaa tarjoaa kokeneille hiihtäjille mahdollisuuden tehdä tutkimusmatkoja, jos he eivät halua pysyä merkityillä laduilla. ----Formal English---- UKK National Park Urho Kekkonen National Park, also known as UKK National Park, is located in the Lapland area of Finland. It is a very popular place for hiking, not just because of the incredible views and breathtaking landscape, but also because of the protected wildlife that resides there. The park was officially created in 1983, and includes almost a thousand square miles to explore. It is one of the largest protected areas in all of Finland. The park is named for former Finnish Prime Minister Urho Kekkonen. One area of interest inside the park is the Suomujoki River, which runs across the northern part. The western area of the park is where most of the marked hiking paths are located. Even a backpacker with very little experience can easily follow the markings. More experienced hikers may prefer to strike out across the wilderness. Most travelers who decide to take on the hiking at UKK National park begin at one of three locations inside the park—Raja-Jooseppi, the Aittajarvi Lake, or the Kiilopaa Fell Center. Most trips end at the Saariselka Fell line. Scattered throughout the park are numerous cabins, providing a bit of shelter on longer hikes, especially during the rainy season. In addition to hiking, UKK National Park is also well-known for its canoeing. The extensive river network inside the park makes it possible to paddle almost anywhere in it. During the winter, activities at the park generally switch over to cross-country skiing, especially in the area near the Saariselka resort. The wide wilderness there provides an opportunity for experienced skiers to go off-trail and explore if they don't want to stay on the marked paths. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101!
