Alue sijaitsee syrjäisellä kukkulalla Suomessa Rauman ja Tampereen välillä. Kun alue otettiin käyttöön yli 3000 vuotta sitten, se sijaitsi rannikolla, mutta maa on kohonnut vuosien varrella, joten nykyään paikka sijaitsee kilometrien päässä rannikolta. Hautausmaa on merkittävä, koska se kertoo meille paljon siellä tuhansia vuosia sitten eläneestä sivilisaatiosta ja heidän hautajaisrituaaleistaan ja muista tärkeistä uskonnollisista ilmiöistä. The site sits on a remote hill in Finland between the cities of Rauma and Tampere. When the site was originally set up more than three thousand years ago it was on the coast, but the land has risen over the years, so now it is several miles from the coast. The burial site is significant because it tells us a lot about the human civilization living there thousands of years ago, including the funerary rites and other important aspects of religion. The cairns are made of stone, and they sit on top of stone or wood cists on cliffs overlooking the area. The contents of the cairns indicate that both inhumation and cremation were used in burial, and a number of grave goods were also buried with the dead. Archeologists have uncovered evidence that the people who buried their dead there were sun worshipers, and the site was probably selected because it is touched by sunlight from dawn until dusk. Sammallahdenmaki is the largest cairn site in the country, and UNESCO added it to its list of World Heritage Sites in 1999. Excavation at the site started in 1891 when the first four cairns were uncovered. There are more cairns than the number of known civilizations living in the area over the last several thousand years, and archeologists have yet to link the burials at Sammallahdenmaki with any particular settlement in the area. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101!
