Prior to accepting this role she held the position of Victim Advocate working with survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. She has trained members of the U.S. Military, law enforcement agencies, juvenile justice agencies, youth serving organizations and businesses about a variety of topics in victim advocacy. The topics she presents include: Media Literacy & Rape Culture, Child Sexual Abuse Prevention, Human Sex Trafficking; Violence Prevention, and Victim Advocacy and Volunteer Training, among others. Throughout her career she has chaired county Coalitions for Violence Prevention and has served as a Director on the Board of the Philadelphia Children’s Alliance, the city’s accredited Child Advocacy Center. Kim is an old friend of mine and reached out to me recently to have her on the show to focus on this important topic. While we will just be scratching the surface, this episode will hopefully give you a starting point from which you can seek out other opportunities to follow up and educate yourself with local resources.  Scene Safety, EMS Street Survival and Episode 486 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 19:42

Scene safety is something I talk about all the time here on the MedicCast. What do you do, though, if the scene suddenly turns from safe to dangerous in the blink of an eye? I have a cautionary tale about that topic. If that’s what you’re looking for, you found it, right here on this week’s episode of the MedicCast. This week’s show has more excellent content from EMS Today 2016 in Baltimore where I was covering the show from the Physio-Control booth. In this cautionary tale and segment from EMS Today, I have two San Diego paramedics who share their story of an assault on EMS and the physical, emotional, and psychological wounds they received. We’ll have that coming up after the introduction of this special episode. All of these segments this week were recorded thanks to the continuing support and sponsorship of the Physio-Control corporation. Thank them for supporting your EMS podcasting community. — EMS Tip of the Week: Scene Safety Story From the Street This next segment for the week is a story of an assault on a pair of San Diego paramedics while they were caring for a patient on a busy street. Out of the blue, they were assaulted by an individual with a knife. I want to say that I can find nothing wrong with the way these two guys approached their scene, before, during or in the aftermath of the attack. It was a surprise and no one could have predicted it. The lesson here, if you’ll be open to learning it comes in how we support each other through difficult times. How do you handle stress in your job and deal with the things that you encounter on the job. These two exceptional gentlemen learned a lot about themselves in the course of their recovery from the attack. They are still learning about their reactions to the events that day. I want you to pay special attention to this special episode. It’s short, but it is packed full of good information for you and your colleagues. MedicCast Episode 481 Good day and welcome to this week’s episode of the MedicCast. I’m your host, Jamie Davis the Podmedic and I’d like to welcome you to this week’s show. This week’s show has more excellent content from EMS Today 2016 in Baltimore where I was covering the show from the Physio-Control booth. First we’ll talk with two of the EMS10 innovation awardees about the projects they implemented that won them the awards. Then we talk with the EMS Siren Amy Eisenhauer about her work to show the risks and challenges with managing patients who are hoarders. All of these segments this week were recorded thanks to the continuing support and sponsorship of the Physio-Control corporation. Thank them for supporting your EMS podcasting community. — EMS Tip of the Week: EMS 10 Awardees First up in this week’s segments is a chat with EMS10 Awardee Rob Luckritz about his program to involve civilian first responders to improve EMS response times in parts of Jersey City, New Jersey. Using the initial response of over 100 volunteers, 49 were selected and graduated from the 60 hour training program. Each received a medical bag including oxygen, defibrillator, and tourniquets, as well as their own two-way radio to communicate their response to EMS calls in their vicinity. Here’s that segment with Rob. Next up I talked with Christoph Redelsteiner, a paramedic and professor at the University of Applied Sciences in St. Pölten, Austria. He is another of the EMS 10 Awardees who was recognized for his efforts to raise paramedic education to the bachelors degree level and beyond in Austria’s EMS education programs. Here’s my chat with Christoph and listen for how he was inspired to go into EMS by a start here in the U.S. Finally, I have Amy Eisenhauer, the EMS Siren who comes by the Physio-Control booth to chat with me about a topic she’s doing a lot of education and presentation on, dealing with patients and families who are hoarders. What unique challenges does this present and what can we do to better manage these patients while maintaining our own safety? We’ll find out in the final segment coming up next. —- Contact the MedicCast If you want to get back in touch with me, make sure you do so. You can email me at podmedic@mac.com.
