The Impact of Neonicotinoids On Honeybee Navigation | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:11:00

In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer talks to Neurobiologist and Professor Emeritus, at the Free University of Berlin, Dr. Randolf Menzel about his latest research titled, Neonicotinoids Interfere with Specific Components of Navigation in Honeybees. Dr. Menzel pioneered the honeybee as a model system in neuroscience with respect to color vision, olfaction, learning, and memory. Combining levels of analysis from natural behavior to single neurons, he traced perceptual and cognitive capacities to their neural and cellular substrates. He established the first evidence for the role of the insect mushroom body in memory formation and characterized the cellular and neural correlates of different phases of memory. His latest research explores the use of three neonicotinoids, (neonicotinoids, imidacloprid, clothianidin and thiacloprid) and their impact on honeybee navigation.  Naked Wine: The Art of Selecting Organic Wines | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:01:00

Most people take for granted that when they select a wine, the ingredients are going to be pure and natural. However, as most conscious consumers know, this is not the case. There are 200 ingredients on the list of government-approved additives for wine. However, unlike food, wine manufacturers arent required to list their ingredients (which can include animal proteins, oak chips, sulfurs, yeasts, enzymes, preservatives, and “Mega Purple” which is a brand of highly concentrated wine color) on the side label. This renders most consumers to be clueless about what exactly is in their wine and used to produce it. In the book, Naked Wine, wine expert, Alice Feiring explores these very issues as she discusses the process of natural wine making. In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer will speak to award winning expert, Alice Feiring. Alice Feiring is an award-winning food and wine journalist and author of the Battle for Wine and Love. Formerly the wine/travel columnist for Time, she now writes for the New York Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, Conde Nast Traveler and the Los Angeles Times Magazine, among many others. Stay tuned!  NYC Crushes Illegal Ivory In Times Square | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:12:00

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, illegal trade in African elephant ivory is a major threat to elephant populations in Africa, particularly in the hardest hit poaching regions of West and Central Africa, where the ivory in this investigation originated. African elephants are protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (“CITES”), an international treaty that entered into force in 1975 to prevent species from becoming endangered or extinct due to international trade. The African elephant is also listed as a threatened species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.  The global demand for elephant ivory led to devastating declines in the number of these giant animals, particularly in the 1970s and 1980s.  Despite international efforts to control the ivory trade and stop the decline of elephant populations, prices and demand remain high, causing continued elephant poaching and illegal ivory finding its way into international and domestic markets.  Recently, the government seized one ton of elephant ivory from a Philadelphia antiques owner named Victor Gorden who will be serving a 30 month sentence for ivory smuggling. As a message to the illegal trade community, the ivory will be crushed in New York City's Times Square on June 19, 2015. In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, Gavin Shire, Chief of Public Affairs, from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will talk to host, June Stoyer about this historic event.

Are Invasive Species A Viable Option For Renewable Energy? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:00

As we shift from petroleum-based energy to renewable energy, the production of biofuel, created from invasive species appears to be a viable option. However, certain plant species which have been proposed for biofuel production include invasive species and/or other plants which have the potential to escape cultivation. Is this a good solution for eliminating an environmental issue while satisfying an energy need or is this type of biofuel merely creating a disaster in the making? In this segment of The Clean Energy View Radio Show, hosts, June Stoyer and special guest host, Luis Mejia talk to Dr. Lewis Ziska about the pros and cons of using invasive species as biofuel. Dr. Ziska is a Plant Physiologist with the USDA's Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville, Maryland. After graduating from the University of California, Davis, he began his career as a Smithsonian fellow, and then took up residence as the Project Leader for global climate change at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines before joining USDA. Dr. Ziska has published numerous papers on carbon dioxide and climate change impacts on agriculture, weed biology and public health. At present he is investigating the role of rising carbon dioxide and changing climate on food security, invasive species and aerobiology. Dr. Ziska's research has appeared in: The Wall Street Journal, National Geographic, The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report and CNN Headline News.
