GC-103 Townville | Love is the Most Important Lesson Learned | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 38:22

Update! As I stated in this episode, I had based my assessment of the situation on information released by public officials and news reports. I am now beginning to learn more detail on the events that took place that dreadful day at Townville Elementary from first hand accounts. I will be following this episode up with detailed and factual information as soon as it is compiled. There are many inaccuracies in the released reports and many news sources have told a story that is simply not accurate. I have now found numerous actionable lessons learned from this tragedy and my mission is to present them to as wide an audience as possible. This was the most difficult episode of Gunfighter Cast I have ever recorded and I wasn’t able to say even half of things that I am feeling right now on this tragedy.  I hope it does not sound like the babblings of an idiot. If you get nothing else from this episode, please understand this sweet boy that humanity lost today. Family Statement “Our son, Jacob Hall, who was shot at Townville Elementary School on Wednesday, died today surrounded by family at Greenville Health System Children’s Hospital. Jacob came into our lives six years and four months ago and changed it completely. He showed us how to love, laugh and smile even on days we did not want to. God gave him to us and he was taken away from us by a senseless act. We know that Jacob has already forgiven this child for what he did to him and his family because that’s the kind of child he was. Jacob was sent to this earth for this short a period of time to show us that there is such a thing as pure love. Jacob is in heaven with God now and everyone who loves him. Words cannot express how much we will miss him. We want to express our thanks and appreciation to the community for the outpouring of love and support. We also want to thank the doctors and nurses at GHS Children’s Hospital, who did everything in their power to try to save Jacob, and to Ms. Hollingsworth, who put her life on the line to try to protect and save Jacob. We also want to thank Preacher Blizzard and the staff of Oakdale Baptist Church, the Townville Rescue Squad, Townville Fire Department, Fire Chief Billy McAdams and all of the first responders. This is an extremely difficult time for our family, and we ask for privacy as we continue to grieve the loss of our beloved son. Funeral arrangements will be shared on Monday.” – Renae and Rodger Hall Jacob’s Mother just announced a “Super Funeral” for Jacob her “Super son”.  I am in awe of this family.  GC-097 Active Shooter Response | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 42:50

The purpose of Gunfighter Cast is to discuss firearms equipment and training as it relates to self defense from a military, law enforcement and responsible citizen perspective. Founder, Host and Producer:  Daniel Shaw, retired marine infantryman, current Director of Training for Thunderbird Tactical, 406 N Seneca, Wichita KS (316)613-2336.  daniel@gunfightercast.com Host and Producter:  John McGregor, retired from full time law enforcement in 2014. Support the show at our Patreon page: www.patreon.com/gunfightercast Sponsored by the Tango Yankee Project www.tangoyankeechip.com Response to the Active Shooter topic suggested by Peter Wiktorski and seconded by Bruce Howes on the FB page. Looking for a show covering active shooter scenarios from a CCW holder perspective as opposed to LE/MIL Duty to protect the public versus a duty to protect an individual as it applies to Law Enforcement. Disclaimer, I am not an attorney and I am not giving legal advice. But I did read the case in question. Warren v. District of Columbia https://scholar.google.com/scholar_case?case=9108468254125174344&q=warren-v-district-of-columbia&hl=en&as_sdt=2006 “courts have without exception concluded that when a municipality or other governmental entity undertakes to furnish police services, it assumes a duty only to the public at large and not to individual members of the community.” “Dereliction in the performance of police duties may, therefore, be redressed only in the context of a public prosecution and not in a private suit for money damages” Police have a duty to protect the public, but they can’t guarantee your safety. How applicable to active shooter situation? Victims lying in entryway will get bypassed. Tactics changed after April 20, 1999. Columbine High School Shooting. No longer set up perimeter and wait for a SWAT Team. The longer the police wait, the greater the body count becomes. Make contact with shooter. May stop the shooter by force or cause shooter to take their own life. Gun Free Zones. Not looking for armed resistance. Contact Team and Rescue Team concepts. Civilian Response. Borrow from Scott Ballard and his Protective Shooting Courses. “Who are you prepared to die for?” Make a list. Wife, kids, other children, Bob in Accounting? Understand that if you choose to attempt to engage an active shooter, you are advancing toward an area containing a deadly force threat, while other good guys armed with firearms who don’t know what you look like advance to the same area. How do you tell a responsible citizen from an active shooter? The video referred to in this episode can be found at http://www.activeshooter.lasd.org/index.html Get out– If there is no one on your “list” and you can escape, do so. Know your exits. Lock Downs. Parking Lots. Assist injured if safe to do so– Training-Medical training and equipment. Secure your location-Fortify location, become an ensconced defender. Fatal funnels. Communicate. The best equipment and tactics don’t matter if you or someone else gets injured at a training session, competition or trip to the gun store, so this show is going back to basics. Sponsors:  Ares Gear www.aresgear.com and Dark Angel Medical www.darkangelmedical.com   Absolutes of Firearms Safety Police Officer shoots self in gun store video A link to the video can be seen at www.gunfightercast.com/wordpress/video96   Comments repeatedly quote accepted firearms safety rules such as: Jeff Cooper’s Commentaries Volume Two, 1994 pg 43 * All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are. * Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy. (For those who insist that this particular gun is unloaded, see Rule 1.) * Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target. This is the Golden Rule. Its violation is directly responsible for about 60 percent of inadvertent discharges. * Identify your target, and what is behind it. Never shoot at anything that you have not positively identified. Regularly over the years, I have seen students who could parrot the firearm safety rules but could not put them into practice.  The theoretical application versus the practical application. Ex. Student on range with other shooters on to right and left.  Can quote “Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.”  Ask same student to lock their slide to the rear and he brings the gun in front of his abdomen, muzzle facing the students to his left, so he can see the slide catch lever and arresting notch.  Theoretical application v. Practical application.  Student is practicing firearms safety skills, then performing a firearms manipulation. Our goal should be to have a foundation of firearm safety like a computer program that is constantly running in the background.  Everything else we do builds on top of our firearm safety practices. Foundation are the absolutes of firearm safety. Muzzle management and trigger finger discipline. Muzzle management:  Keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction. Safe direction: A direction where, if an unintentional discharge were to occur, there would be no change of personal injury, and the minimal amount of property damage.   Trigger finger discipline:  Keep your finger off the trigger until you are on target and have decided to fire. Trigger finger should be pressing into the frame of the weapon with firm pressure.  Firearms are engineered to feel comfortable wit...
