The Queen turned 87 in 2013, and visitors still flock to her official London residence to bask in the presence of this national treasure. With 775 rooms, Buckingham Palace has remained the official London residence of Britain's sovereigns since 1837. Each year, more than 50,000 people are invited to the palace to attend dinners, receptions, lunches, banquets, and Royal Garden Parties. Are those dates open? Receptionist: Let me check. I'm glad to inform you that there are currently no reservations for the first week of March. Sarah: Excellent. I do have a few questions for you. Receptionist: Yes? Sarah: What kind of services do you provide? Receptionist: We have three types of menus; our regular menu, a gluten-free menu, and a kosher menu. Since we have an in-house chef, we are also able to special order almost any recipe with advanced notice. Sarah: Excellent! We have two delegates with special dietary requirements. How many restaurants do you have in the city and where are they located? Receptionist: Just the one. We pride ourselves on being a unique traditional restaurant. The thing is, it's still up, and attracting visitors from all over the world! Contrary to popular belief, London Bridge actually refers to several bridges that span the River Thames between the City of London and Southwark, in central London. The current crossing is a box girder made from steel and concrete. It opened to traffic in 1973 and replaced a 19th century stone-arched bridge. When most people think of London Bridge, perhaps one of the city's most famous and well-known landmarks, what they are most likely referring to is Tower Bridge. Opened in 1894, it is a hydraulic bridge that can be raised to permit traffic to pass underneath. From the bridge, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the River Thames. Additionally, there is a museum that explains how the bascule bridge operates, and gives detailed information about its history. The Tower Bridge museum is an exciting way to see one of the most famous bridges in the world. After watching an educational video which explains why, and more importantly, how, the bridge was built, it is possible to walk to the high level walkways, 42 metres above the River Thames. It provides stunning views of the London city skyline. There is also a chance to see a photography exhibition dedicated to the "Great Bridges of the World." "Check!" My daughter works to give a thumbs up, focusing on folding her fingers down. "Juice box?" "Check!" "Hat?" "Check!" "Okay then. Are we ready to go?" "I'm ready, Mommy!" It is a beautiful spring day, and we have arrived at the zoo. We check out a red plastic wagon and proceed to our favorite enclosure—the elephants. Normally, these awesome creatures are outside, reaching with their trunks for hay strung high up in the rafters of a light shelter or playing in their slow, elephant way. Today, however, we are in for a treat. It's bath time. One of the elephants is sandwiched into a just elephant-sized metal corral that is visible from a large window high up in the building that houses the animals at night. My daughter presses her face against it, watching intently as one keeper sprays the elephant with a garden hose and another keeper scrubs her down with a large bristle brush. "Look! Look!" My daughter reaches for my leg and pulls. "She's brushing her teeth!" Indeed, the keeper is now scrubbing the impressive tusks and patting the elephant's cheek. Its long eyelashes shift slightly as if to say, okay, get it done if you must. It is a big moment for a toddler when she discovers that even elephants must have their teeth brushed, and it's an added bonus for mommies who can go home and say, "All right! Let's brush teeth like the elephant!" and receive a smile in return. --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101!
